In according in this publication due consideration to those who are effectively upholding <strong>the</strong> prestige <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> medical pr<strong>of</strong>ession in Marion County, a place <strong>of</strong> due relative precedence is consistentlygiven to Dr. Reuben Shelby O'Neal, who is engaged in successful generalpractice at Buena Vista, <strong>the</strong> county seat, <strong>and</strong> whose clientage is <strong>of</strong> substantial<strong>and</strong> representative order.Doctor O'Neal was born in Harris County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, on <strong>the</strong> 1st <strong>of</strong> September, 1886, <strong>and</strong> is a son <strong>of</strong> William Henry <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth (Sledge) O'Neal,who still maintain <strong>the</strong>ir home in that county. William H. 0 'Neal was born inTroup County, this state, on <strong>the</strong> 12th <strong>of</strong> March, 1845, <strong>and</strong> was <strong>the</strong>re rearedto manhood. When <strong>the</strong> Civil war cast its pall over <strong>the</strong> national horizon hewas one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gallant young men <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> who went forth in defense <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Confederacy. As a member <strong>of</strong> a Company B <strong>of</strong> sharpshooters in <strong>the</strong> Sixtieth <strong>Georgia</strong> Regiment he made a brilliant record <strong>and</strong> his service as a soldier covered a period <strong>of</strong> three years, his continued interest in hisold comrades being shown by his active <strong>and</strong> appreciative affiliation with <strong>the</strong>United Confederate Veterans. 'After <strong>the</strong> war William H. O'Neal continuedhis association with agricultural industry in Troup County for two yearsafter his marriage, which was <strong>the</strong>re solemnized in 1866, his wife likewisehaving been born in that county. In 1868 <strong>the</strong>y removed to Harris County,where he has since continued a successful <strong>and</strong> progressive exponent <strong>of</strong> agricultural enterprise <strong>and</strong> where he is a citizen <strong>of</strong> influence <strong>and</strong> high st<strong>and</strong>ing.He has been affiliated with <strong>the</strong> Masonic fraternity from <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> attainingto his legal majority <strong>and</strong> while not a seeker <strong>of</strong> political <strong>of</strong>fice he has showna loyal interest in public affairs, especially those <strong>of</strong> a local order. His fa<strong>the</strong>rwas a pioneer <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> <strong>and</strong> served with distinction as a soldier in <strong>the</strong> earlyIndian wars, in connection with which he held <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> general. Mrs.Elizabeth (Sledge) O'Neal was born on <strong>the</strong> 15th <strong>of</strong> March, 1845, <strong>and</strong> is a representative <strong>of</strong> an old <strong>and</strong> honored family <strong>of</strong> Troup County. William H. <strong>and</strong>Elizabeth O'Neal became <strong>the</strong> parents <strong>of</strong> eight children, <strong>of</strong> whom <strong>the</strong> eldest,Ida, is <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> William R. Morgan, <strong>of</strong> Harris County; Mary is <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong>Walter C. Clevel<strong>and</strong>, <strong>of</strong> Salem, Troup County; Miss Willie O'Neal is a popular teacher in <strong>the</strong> schools at Poplar Springs, Haralson County; Dr. RaneeO'Neal, a graduate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Atlanta College <strong>of</strong> Physicians & Surgeons, is engaged in <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>ession at West Point, Troup County; Annieis <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> Thomas R. Hutchinson, a substantial farmer <strong>of</strong> Troup County;Dr. John R., a graduate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Dental College, in <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong>Atlanta, is engaged in successful practice at Pelham, Mitchell County; MissAmy O'Neal remains at <strong>the</strong> parental home; <strong>and</strong> Dr. Reuben S., subject <strong>of</strong>this review, was <strong>the</strong> last in order <strong>of</strong> birth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eight children.In <strong>the</strong> schools <strong>of</strong> his native county Dr. Reuben S. O'Neal continued hisstudies until he was eligible for admission to <strong>the</strong> high school at West Point,Troup County, <strong>and</strong> after a course in <strong>the</strong> latter he followed his ambitious purpose by entering <strong>the</strong> Atlanta Medical College, in which he continued his technical studies two years. At Augusta he was <strong>the</strong>n matriculated in <strong>the</strong> medicaldepartment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> in this institution he wasgraduated as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> 1910 <strong>and</strong> with <strong>the</strong> well earned degree<strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Medicine. During <strong>the</strong> ensuing year he fur<strong>the</strong>r fortified himselfby serving as interne in <strong>the</strong> city hospital <strong>of</strong> Augusta, where he gained valuable <strong>and</strong> varied clinical experience <strong>of</strong> a preliminary order. He <strong>the</strong>n servedhis pr<strong>of</strong>essional novitiate by engaging in practice at Langdale, ChambersCounty, Alabama, but one year later he returned to <strong>Georgia</strong> <strong>and</strong> establishedhimself in practice at Bronwood, Terrell County, where he remained 2y2
