He finds recreation <strong>and</strong> social refreshment as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Commercial <strong>and</strong> Country clubs, Augusta.On April 29,1916, Doctor Michel sailed for France <strong>of</strong>fering his pr<strong>of</strong>essionalservices to <strong>the</strong> French army. He was assigned to duty in L 'hopital Auxiliere156 at Lyon <strong>and</strong> put in charge <strong>of</strong> 150 beds. He is still in service, with <strong>the</strong>rank <strong>of</strong> major.NATHANIEL EDWIN HARRIS, <strong>the</strong> present chief executive <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, whoseterm expires in 1917, was born at Jonesboro, Tennessee, January 21, 1846.In May, 1862, he enlisted in <strong>the</strong> Confederate army <strong>and</strong> served until <strong>the</strong> close<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war, a portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time on <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Army <strong>of</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Virginia. In 1870 he graduated as an A. B. from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> <strong>and</strong>in 1872 began <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law at Sparta, <strong>Georgia</strong>. The State University conferred <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> LL. D. upon him in 1910, <strong>and</strong> Emory Collegelikewise honored him in 1913.Governor Harris moved to Macon in 1873; was corporation counsel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>city in 1874-82; member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> House <strong>of</strong> Representatives in 1882-6<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Senate in 1894-5; judge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Superior Court, Macon Circuit, in1912 <strong>and</strong> has been governor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state since 1915. He founded <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>School <strong>of</strong> Technology in 1885 <strong>and</strong> has since been chairman <strong>of</strong> its board <strong>of</strong>trustees, as well as a trustee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> for <strong>the</strong> same period.He has also been prominently identified with <strong>the</strong> V<strong>and</strong>erbilt University <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong> Wesleyan Female College. He has been president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Macon Bar Association sincQ 1911, <strong>and</strong> is <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> various <strong>Georgia</strong> Reports, <strong>the</strong> firstvolume <strong>of</strong> which he issued in 1876.WILLIAM SCHLEY HOWARD, congressman from <strong>the</strong> Fifth <strong>Georgia</strong> District,was born in Kirkwood, <strong>Georgia</strong>, June 29, 1875. Admitted to <strong>the</strong> bar in 1895,he has since been a lawyer <strong>and</strong> resident <strong>of</strong> Decatur, that state. He served asa member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> House <strong>of</strong> Representatives <strong>and</strong> solicitor general previous to becoming judge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stone Mountain Circuit <strong>and</strong> occupied <strong>the</strong>bench until 1910. In <strong>the</strong> following year he was elected to Congress for hisfirst term. His present term in <strong>the</strong> Sixty-fourth Congress will expire in 1917.PAUL ROMARB. From <strong>the</strong> organization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Atlanta National Bank in1865 <strong>the</strong> late Paul Romare was continuously identified with <strong>the</strong> institutionuntil his death on February 8, 1904. In that period <strong>of</strong> nearly forty yearshe held every position in <strong>the</strong> bank from clerk to president, <strong>and</strong> it was <strong>the</strong>importance <strong>of</strong> that position <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> dignity associated with a man <strong>of</strong> splendidcharacter <strong>and</strong> rugged achievements that made his passing one to be deploredthroughout <strong>the</strong> city, although he was at <strong>the</strong> time full <strong>of</strong> years <strong>and</strong> ripe in all<strong>the</strong> experiences <strong>and</strong> accomplishments allowed to one individual career. Hemade his personality count for a great deal in <strong>the</strong> financial <strong>and</strong> civil life <strong>of</strong>Atlanta, <strong>and</strong> he left a name that may be properly cherished by all hisdescendants.The best story <strong>of</strong> his life is found in his own simple, straightforward, <strong>and</strong>unadorned words which were set down as he uttered <strong>the</strong>m a number <strong>of</strong> yearsbefore his death, <strong>and</strong> while he was vice president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Atlanta National.The readers <strong>of</strong> his unconventional autobiography will appreciate from hislanguage <strong>the</strong> substantial character <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prominent banker-citizen who, coming to America a youth without knowledge <strong>of</strong> a word <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> English tongue,eventually made himself one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> strongest factors in <strong>the</strong> financial affairs<strong>of</strong> a great Sou<strong>the</strong>rn city. His story <strong>of</strong> his career is contained in <strong>the</strong> followingparagraphs:'' I am a Swede, born on <strong>the</strong> shores <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cattegat, in <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Torckow,Province <strong>of</strong> Skane, Sweden, November 20, 1828.
