Reference ismade to <strong>the</strong> extensive greenhouses, conducted by <strong>the</strong> firm <strong>of</strong> WachendorffBro<strong>the</strong>rs, florists, with <strong>of</strong>fices at 480 Simpson Street.Edward Wachendorff, <strong>the</strong> founder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> business, was born at Stuttgart,Wurttemberg, Germany, July 29, 1838. He grew to manhood in his nativel<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> learned <strong>the</strong> florist business <strong>the</strong>re <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n decided to seek a widerfield for <strong>the</strong> exercise <strong>of</strong> his skill in growing plants <strong>and</strong> flowers <strong>and</strong> thus,two months after his marriage, in 1867, reached <strong>the</strong> United States. In 1878 hecame to Atlanta <strong>and</strong> here found a tract <strong>of</strong> ten acres <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong> admirably suitedto his purpose. This tract he purchased <strong>and</strong> it belongs still to <strong>the</strong> family,its value having grown far beyond <strong>the</strong> initial price paid for it. On this l<strong>and</strong>Edward Wachendorff erected such structures as suited his business at <strong>the</strong>time <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y have been rebuilt <strong>and</strong> improved from time to time until <strong>the</strong>ynow cover a large space <strong>and</strong> are filled with <strong>the</strong> beautiful plants <strong>and</strong> flowersthat only <strong>the</strong> most careful <strong>and</strong> competent florists can produce. Many changeshave taken place in <strong>the</strong> vicinity, including a change in city apportionmentthat brought this l<strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong> Fifth Ward to <strong>the</strong> First Ward. After <strong>the</strong>death <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> founder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> business, December 10, 1896, <strong>the</strong> ownership' descended to <strong>the</strong> two sons, Charles J. <strong>and</strong> Edward A., who continue under <strong>the</strong>firm name <strong>of</strong> Wachendorff Bro<strong>the</strong>rs.On July 15, 1867, Edward Wachendorff was married to Bertha Mueller,who was born in Wurttemberg, Germany, May 12, 1843. She was five yearsold when her fa<strong>the</strong>r, Charles Mueller, had emigrated to <strong>the</strong> United States,locating at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her mo<strong>the</strong>r had previously died inGermany <strong>and</strong> she was reared by an aunt. She still survives <strong>and</strong> resides atAtlanta. Seven children were born to <strong>the</strong> above marriage, <strong>the</strong> survivorsbeing; Bertha, who is <strong>the</strong> widow <strong>of</strong> Dr. Charles J. Ramsey, <strong>of</strong> Atlanta, hastwo children, Roy C. <strong>and</strong> Annie Pauline; Charles J.; Pauline, who is nowMrs. Sill; <strong>and</strong> Edward A. <strong>and</strong> Eugene C., all <strong>of</strong> Atlanta. The youngest sonEugene C. Wachendorff, is an architect, with <strong>of</strong>fices in <strong>the</strong> Empire Building.Charles J. Wachendorff was born at St. Mat<strong>the</strong>ws, Kentucky, December 16,1872, but has lived at Atlanta since he was five years old. On January 16,1901, he was united in marriage with Miss Carrie Neuner, also <strong>of</strong> St. Mat<strong>the</strong>ws,a village just outside Louisville, Kentucky, <strong>and</strong> it is a curious coincidence thatMr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Wachendorff were born in <strong>the</strong> very same house <strong>the</strong>re although<strong>the</strong>ir acquaintance did not begin until <strong>the</strong>y were grown. He is a member <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong> trustees <strong>of</strong> Oglethorpe University, Atlanta.Edward A. Wachendorff was born at Atlanta, December 9, 1878, <strong>and</strong> thiscity has been his home all his life. On November 8, 1904, he was married toLlewellyn Fuller, who was born at Columbus, <strong>Georgia</strong>. He is serving as awaterworks commissioner from <strong>the</strong> First Ward.HON. SCOTT T. BEATON. When in 1915 Hon. Scott T. Beaton was electedmayor <strong>of</strong> Waycross without opposition, it was <strong>the</strong> second occurrence <strong>of</strong> thiskind in <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. During his first term he had shown himselfable, conscientious, energetic <strong>and</strong> faithful, a true friend <strong>of</strong> progress <strong>and</strong> anuntiring worker in behalf <strong>of</strong> civic improvement, moral advancement <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>elevation <strong>of</strong> citizenship. With such a record <strong>the</strong> people were more thansatisfied, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir approval was signified at <strong>the</strong> polls when Mr. Beaton wasseated in <strong>the</strong> mayoralty chair without a dissenting voice.Mayor Beaton was born in Charlton County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, August 19, 1877,<strong>and</strong> is a son <strong>of</strong> James T. <strong>and</strong> Florence (Holtzendorff) Beaton. His fa<strong>the</strong>rwas born near Norfolk, Virginia, August 11, 1851, a son <strong>of</strong> David E. <strong>and</strong>Elizabeth Ann (Davis) Beaton, both natives <strong>of</strong> Norfolk, Virginia. The respective parents <strong>of</strong> David <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth came from Scotl<strong>and</strong>. David Beatonwas a large planter in Virginia, was a soldier in <strong>the</strong> War <strong>of</strong> 1812, <strong>and</strong> diedwhen about sixty-one years <strong>of</strong> age, his wife passing away at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> fifty.She was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baptist Church.
