Judge <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Green became <strong>the</strong>parents <strong>of</strong> seven children, all <strong>of</strong> whom are living, namely: Hugh, Louise,Ruth, Walter Gresham, Jr., Julian Cox, Annie, <strong>and</strong> Theone Allona. Theolder son, Hugh, is engaged in mercantile business in his native county;Louise is <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> William G. Johnsto'n, <strong>of</strong> Waynesboro; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rchildren still remain members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> happy family circle in <strong>the</strong> parental home.HON. A former judge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Glynn County Court atBrunswick, Mr. Crovatt is now one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oldest attorneys practising in <strong>the</strong>Brunswick Circuit. He has represented <strong>the</strong> interests <strong>of</strong> important litigantsin this district for fully thirty-five years. His work has brought him a highst<strong>and</strong>ing- as a lawyer <strong>and</strong> as a public <strong>of</strong>ficial <strong>and</strong> citizen 'he is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>leading men <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Georgia</strong>.Born at Charleston, South Carolina, June 2, 1859, he is a son <strong>of</strong> William<strong>and</strong>' Theatra (Williams) Crovatt. His parents were both born in SouthCarolina, <strong>and</strong> his. fa<strong>the</strong>r was a Charleston business man. During <strong>the</strong> war heenlisted as a private in <strong>the</strong> Confederate army, <strong>and</strong> after <strong>the</strong> war he continuedto live in South Carolina until 1869, when he removed to Brunswick, <strong>Georgia</strong>,which was his home until his death at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty-five. His wife died atBrooklyn, New York, in 1910, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty-five.The older <strong>of</strong> two children, Judge Crovatt as a boy attended <strong>the</strong> TarrantAcademy at Charleston, <strong>and</strong> also Charleston College. He finished <strong>the</strong> sophomore year in <strong>the</strong> latter institution <strong>and</strong> in 1880 was graduated from <strong>the</strong> Carolina Military Institute, now <strong>the</strong> Citadel, at Charleston. He belongs to <strong>the</strong>chapter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sigina Alpha Epsilon fraternity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Military Institute.In <strong>the</strong> meantime he had already determined upon <strong>the</strong> law as his pr<strong>of</strong>ession,<strong>and</strong> after study in <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Andrew J. Smith <strong>of</strong> Brunswick he was ad-Order <strong>of</strong> Elks, <strong>the</strong> Improved Order <strong>of</strong> Red Men <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Knights <strong>of</strong> Pythias,at Brunswick except when <strong>of</strong>ficial duties prevented.For nine years he has filled <strong>the</strong> important <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> judge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CountyCourt <strong>of</strong> Glynn County <strong>and</strong> to his judicial <strong>of</strong>fice he brought a rare combination <strong>of</strong> sound legal learning <strong>and</strong> mature judgment. His first political <strong>of</strong>ficewas as county solicitor, which he filled in 1882. He has also been mayor <strong>of</strong>Brunswick three'times, in 1884-85 <strong>and</strong> again in 1903. He was president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Brunswick Board <strong>of</strong> Education, has served as chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> DemocraticExecutive Committee, is a former director <strong>of</strong> banks <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r local enterprises,is counsel for <strong>the</strong> Jekyl Isl<strong>and</strong> Club <strong>and</strong> several railways, <strong>and</strong> is a member <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> County, State <strong>and</strong> American Bar Associations. Fraternally his relationsare with <strong>the</strong> Independent Order <strong>of</strong> Odd Fellows, <strong>the</strong> Benevolent <strong>and</strong> ProtectiveOrder <strong>of</strong> Elks, <strong>the</strong> Improved Order <strong>of</strong> Red Men <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Knights <strong>of</strong> Pythias.His church is <strong>the</strong> Episcopal.In 1880 at Brunswick he married Miss Mary Lee Schlatter, daughter <strong>of</strong>Col. Charles L. Schlatter. Colonel Schlatter was a very prominent railroadman both in <strong>the</strong> North <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> South, <strong>and</strong> formerly served as chief engineer <strong>and</strong> vice president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Brunswick & Western, now part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AtlanticCoast Line. Judge Crovatt <strong>and</strong> wife have two sons. William Cecil, born atBrunswick, a graduate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> public schools, finished his education in EmoryCollege <strong>and</strong> is now a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States Marine Corps. AlfredHayne, <strong>the</strong> younger son, graduated from Emory College <strong>and</strong> Mercer University Law School in 1904, <strong>and</strong> is now in active practice at Brunswick, wherehe is serving as solicitor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City Court. He is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SigmaAlpha Epsilon college fraternity. There is also one daughter, Mary LeeCrovatt, who is graduated from <strong>the</strong> Lee School for Girls at Cambridge, Massachusetts, <strong>and</strong> is now living in New York City.JAMES A.
