BKANSON was for nearly fifteen ye"ars a leading educator<strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, but since 1914 has been identified with <strong>the</strong> university <strong>of</strong> his nativestate, North Carolina. He was born in 1861 at Morehead City, receiving hisA. M. from Trinity College, North Carolina, <strong>and</strong> A. M. from Peabody NormalCollege, Nashville, Tennessee. Before coming to <strong>Georgia</strong> as superintendent<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ns schools, he had been principal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> high school at Raleigh,<strong>and</strong> superintendent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> schools at "Wilson, North Carolina. Subsequentlyhe became pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> pedagogy at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Normal <strong>and</strong> Industrial School;was president in 1900-12, <strong>and</strong> in 1912-14 head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> department <strong>of</strong> ruraleconomics <strong>and</strong> sociology, <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> latter year was called to assume charge<strong>of</strong> a similar department in <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> North Carolina. lie is <strong>the</strong>author <strong>of</strong> many text books on teaching, <strong>and</strong> has written much for currentliterature.JUDSON C. CLEMENTS. For ten years a member <strong>of</strong> Congress from <strong>the</strong>Seventh <strong>Georgia</strong> District <strong>and</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States Interstate Commerce Commission for <strong>the</strong> past fourteen years, Judson C. Clements is a native<strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, born in Walker County, February 12, 1846. He served during <strong>the</strong>last two years <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civil war as a Confederate private <strong>and</strong> first lieutenant,graduated from <strong>the</strong> law department <strong>of</strong> Cumberl<strong>and</strong> University, Lebanon, Tennessee, in 1868, <strong>and</strong> practiced for several years <strong>the</strong>reafter at La Fayette, <strong>Georgia</strong>. From 1872 to 1877 he served in both houses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Legislature <strong>and</strong>from 1881 to 1891, inclusive, was a member <strong>of</strong> Congress. In March, 1892, hewas appointed a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Interstate Commerce Commission <strong>and</strong> is still inactive service.G. LLOYD PREACHER. Genuine talent, united with industry <strong>and</strong> perseverance, never fails to conquer success, in no matter what line <strong>of</strong> activityit may be exerted. A notable example <strong>of</strong> this may be found in <strong>the</strong> career <strong>of</strong>G. Lloyd Preacher, <strong>the</strong> leading architect in Augusta <strong>and</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foremostmen in his pr<strong>of</strong>ession in <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn states. Mr. Preacher was born inFairfax, South Carolina, May 11, 1882, <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> Rev. John F. <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth (Augley) Preacher. His parents were both natives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> PalmettoState, <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r being a prominent Baptist minister, now retired, who devotedall <strong>the</strong> active years <strong>of</strong> his life to <strong>the</strong> church, serving as pastor in Fairfax,Hampton <strong>and</strong> Colleton, South Carolina.G. Lloyd Preacher, who was <strong>the</strong> youngest <strong>of</strong> his parents' nine children,acquired a respectable literary education, graduating from <strong>the</strong> high schoolat Fairfax. He <strong>the</strong>n entered Clemson College, where he applied himself to<strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> engineering <strong>and</strong> architecture, being graduated Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science in <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> 1904. On June 15th <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same year Mr. Preacher madehis appearance in Augusta, coming here to take <strong>the</strong> position -<strong>of</strong> manager in<strong>the</strong> engineering department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lombard Iron Works. This position heretained for five years, resigning in 1909 to engage in architectural <strong>and</strong> engineering business. His success in this line has been remarkable <strong>and</strong> unusual<strong>and</strong> may be attributed to a natural adaptation to this pursuit <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong>thorough training he received fti it in his student days. His work is <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>highest class <strong>and</strong> so artistic as to have attracted wide spread attention, notonly in this state but beyond its limits. Among <strong>the</strong> most notable specimens<strong>of</strong> his talent may be mentioned <strong>the</strong> following buildings, to some <strong>of</strong> which weappend <strong>the</strong> cost: In Augusta, <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Empire Life Office Building,$550,000.00; Chronicle Office Building, $300,000.00; University hospitals,$500,000.00; Mt. St. Joseph's schools, $330,000.00; Medical College Building,$50,000.00; Plaza Hotel, $110,000.00; Masonic Temple Building, $100,000.00;Shirley Apartment Building, $60,000.00; Fire Department Headquarters,$30,000.00; No. 6 Engine House, $15,000.00 Houghton Grammar School, $60,-000.00; Modjeska Theater Building, $40,000.00; Real Estate Development
