These vast collections <strong>of</strong> books include publications that disclose ripened thought <strong>and</strong> widevision <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y 'come from <strong>the</strong> pen. <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scientist, poet <strong>and</strong> romancer <strong>of</strong>this <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r times'. "While none, perhaps, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se libraries approach innumber <strong>of</strong> volumes <strong>the</strong> famous collections <strong>of</strong> old European "cities that havebeen centers <strong>of</strong> learning for ages, <strong>the</strong>y are quite an indispensable feature inevery educational movement both public <strong>and</strong> private. To have entire charge<strong>of</strong> such an important department in a great educational institution, to have<strong>the</strong> responsibility <strong>of</strong> choice <strong>and</strong> purchase <strong>of</strong> all literature for <strong>the</strong> instruction<strong>and</strong> entertainment <strong>of</strong> a large body <strong>of</strong> students <strong>of</strong> impressionable age, <strong>the</strong>remust be called to <strong>the</strong> task one who has been carefully trained for <strong>the</strong> workfinding it congenial, <strong>and</strong> one <strong>of</strong> discriminating judgment whose experiencehas been wide as well as academic. The University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, in DuncanBurnet, has secured <strong>the</strong> services <strong>of</strong> a scholarly man, an efficient, trainedlibrarian.Duncan Burnet was born at Cincinnati, Ohio, June 2, 1876, <strong>and</strong> is a son<strong>of</strong> Jacob <strong>and</strong> Mary (Scott) Burnet. The fa<strong>the</strong>r was a native <strong>of</strong> Ohio <strong>and</strong>passed his entire life in that state, his death occurring in 1891, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong>sixty-one years. He was widely known in insurance circles <strong>and</strong> for manyyears was president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cincinnati Insurance Company. His ancestorscame from Engl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> settled in Virginia in 1640. His gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r wasJacob Burnet, once a senator from Ohio <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> great political prominencein that state, <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first state constitution, <strong>and</strong> was <strong>the</strong> nominator,in 1840, <strong>of</strong> William Henry Harrison for <strong>the</strong> presidency. The mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>Doctor Burnet was born in Kentucky <strong>and</strong> died in November, 1914, at Cincinnati, Ohio, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> eighty-one years. Her fa<strong>the</strong>r, Gen. Charles Scott,was an <strong>of</strong>ficer in <strong>the</strong> Federal army <strong>and</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r had been a governmentsurgeon <strong>and</strong> a friend <strong>of</strong> La Fayette.Duncan Burnet was <strong>the</strong> seventh born in' a family <strong>of</strong> eight children <strong>and</strong>is <strong>the</strong> only surviving son. He received his early schooling in Cincinnati <strong>and</strong>after <strong>the</strong> family moved for a time to California, <strong>the</strong>re entered PomonaCollege, taking advantage later <strong>of</strong> an opportunity for a year <strong>of</strong> travel abroad.Upon his return he entered Lehigh University <strong>and</strong> took a library sciencecourse, following which he was a student in <strong>the</strong> New York State <strong>Library</strong>School. His first library experience was in <strong>the</strong> public library <strong>of</strong> Cincinnati<strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong>re went to Columbia, Missouri, where he remained as assistantlibrarian until 1904, when he was tendered <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> librarian <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>. Under his administration <strong>the</strong> university library hasbecome well ordered <strong>and</strong> exceedingly satisfying in all branches, Mr. Burnetnot only having <strong>the</strong> book lover's instinct but also <strong>the</strong> practical sense that isequally important in providing for <strong>the</strong> comfort <strong>and</strong> convenience <strong>of</strong> thosefor whose advantage <strong>the</strong> library is provided.Mr. Burnet was married in 1912 to Miss Inez Daughtry, <strong>of</strong> Jackson,<strong>Georgia</strong>, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Hampton Lamar <strong>and</strong> Florida (Bryans) Daughtry,natives <strong>of</strong> Indian Spring, where <strong>the</strong>y reside. Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Burnet have twochildren: Mary Scott, who was born June 21, 1913; <strong>and</strong> Duncan Burnet,named for his fa<strong>the</strong>r, born at A<strong>the</strong>ns, <strong>Georgia</strong>, January 8, 1915. Mr. Burnet<strong>and</strong> wife are members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presbyterian Church. He entertains independentviews on public matters but never fails to be interested in all that concerns<strong>the</strong> beautiful city in which he makes his home. Outside <strong>of</strong> college fraternities<strong>and</strong> literary organizations, Mr. Burnet has not identified himself with anyorders.HON. WADE HAMPTON LASSETEE. A former judge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City Court <strong>of</strong>Vienna, a lawyer <strong>of</strong> broad <strong>and</strong> successful experience, <strong>and</strong> a man who is doingmuch to promote <strong>and</strong> furnish an example in <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> high grade stock
