3024 GEORGIA AND GEORGIANS<strong>the</strong> war <strong>and</strong> captain <strong>of</strong> his company at <strong>the</strong> inception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war. His regimentwas a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> General Bragg <strong>and</strong> with it he participated in .many engagements, including a number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> important battles marking <strong>the</strong>progress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great struggle between <strong>the</strong> states <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> South <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> North.In a conflict near Chickamauga he was wounded, but he soon resumed hiaplace with his regiment <strong>and</strong> continued in service until <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war.Judge Pottle passed <strong>the</strong> closing period <strong>of</strong> his life at Macon, Bibb County, <strong>and</strong>died in 1886, in Micanopy, Florida, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty-three years, his widowbeing called to eternal rest in 1888, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> forty years. Of <strong>the</strong>ir children*<strong>the</strong> eldest is Joseph E., who is a representative member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bar <strong>of</strong> Milledgeville,Baldwin County, <strong>and</strong> who recently resigned as solicitor general for <strong>the</strong>Ocmulgee circuit; Mina P. is <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> A. H. Hodges, <strong>of</strong> Bulloch County;<strong>and</strong> Judge J. R., immediate subject <strong>of</strong> this review, is <strong>the</strong> youngest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>children.To <strong>the</strong> public schools <strong>of</strong> Warrenton, Judge Pottle is indebted for his preliminary educational discipline, which was supplemented by a course <strong>of</strong> studyin <strong>the</strong> college at Milledgeville, in which he was graduated when but sixteenyears <strong>of</strong> age. For <strong>the</strong> ensuing four years he was a successful teacher in <strong>the</strong>public schools, <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> meanwhile he gave close attention also to <strong>the</strong> study<strong>of</strong> law. He soon fortified himself in <strong>the</strong> learning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law <strong>and</strong> in 1896proved himself eligible for <strong>and</strong> was admitted to <strong>the</strong> bar <strong>of</strong> his native state.He was favored in being <strong>the</strong>n appointed a law clerk for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> SupremeCourt, <strong>of</strong> which position he continued <strong>the</strong> incumbent nine years, during whichhe had exceptional opportunities for fur<strong>the</strong>ring his knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> science<strong>of</strong> jurisprudence, <strong>the</strong> incidental discipline being <strong>of</strong> most valuable order.In 1905 Judge Pottle engaged in <strong>the</strong> independent practice <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>essionat Blakely, Early County, where he developed a large law business <strong>and</strong> wherehe continued his residence until 1912. In 1912 he was appointed judge <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Court <strong>of</strong> Appeals <strong>of</strong> Early County, <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> ensuing general electionhe was duly elected to this <strong>of</strong>fice. He continued Kis effective service on <strong>the</strong>bench for a period <strong>of</strong> two years, at <strong>the</strong> expiration <strong>of</strong> which he resigned <strong>the</strong>post <strong>and</strong> removed to <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Albany, Dougherty County, where he hassince continued in active general practice <strong>and</strong> where he has precedence asone <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leading members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bar <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Albany judicial circuit. The judgeis an active <strong>and</strong> appreciative member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> State Bar Association, <strong>the</strong>American Bar Association, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dougherty County Bar Association. JudgePottle gives <strong>the</strong> stanchest <strong>of</strong> allegiance to <strong>the</strong> democratic party <strong>and</strong> has givenyeoman service in <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> its cause. He is affiliated with <strong>the</strong>Masonic fraternity, including <strong>the</strong> Ancient Arabic Order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nobles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Mystic Shrine, <strong>and</strong> ig identified also with <strong>the</strong> Knights <strong>of</strong> Pythias <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong> Benevolent <strong>and</strong> Protective Order <strong>of</strong> Elks. He is a 1 valued member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Country Club at Albany <strong>and</strong> both he <strong>and</strong> his wife are earnest members <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Methodist Episcopal Church, South.In <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Macon, <strong>Georgia</strong>, on <strong>the</strong> 19th <strong>of</strong> April, 1915, was solemnized<strong>the</strong> marriage <strong>of</strong> Judge Pottle to Miss Nell Johnston, daughter <strong>of</strong> Dr. H. L.Johnston, <strong>of</strong> Palmetto, Campbell County, <strong>and</strong> she is a popular factor in <strong>the</strong>representative social activities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Albany. By a former marriageJudge Pottle has two children Rol<strong>and</strong>, who was born in Burke County, in1893, <strong>and</strong> who attended Emory College; <strong>and</strong> Virginia, who was born in <strong>the</strong>City <strong>of</strong> Atlanta, <strong>and</strong> who is now attending St. Mary's College at Raleigh,North Carolina.L. Through distinctive ability <strong>and</strong> ambitious <strong>and</strong> resolute purpose it has been given to Mr. Ford to gain precedence as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> representative younger members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bar <strong>of</strong> his native state <strong>and</strong> he is establishedin <strong>the</strong> successful practice <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>ession at Albany, <strong>the</strong> judicial center <strong>of</strong>Dougherty County.
