In 1872 he was elected a member <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Legislature. At one time he also served as mayor <strong>of</strong> Mullins, <strong>and</strong> wasin every way a citizen worthy <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> honors bestowed upon him <strong>and</strong> playeda most useful part in his community.On February 20, 1866, Noah B. Cooper married Miss Lucinda Jenerette<strong>of</strong> Rehoboth, South Carolina. She was <strong>the</strong> oldest child <strong>of</strong> Samuel ThomasJenerette, <strong>and</strong> was born on her fa<strong>the</strong>r's farm December 22, 1843, <strong>and</strong> is stillliving in <strong>the</strong> old home at Mullins, South Carolina. Her fa<strong>the</strong>r was <strong>the</strong> youngest son <strong>of</strong> Elias Jenerette, who was born in France in 1755 <strong>and</strong> died in NorthCarolina in 1837. Noah B. Cooper <strong>and</strong> wife had twelve children: WilliamBryant, born January 22,1867; Noah Webster, born August 17, 1868; PrestonS., born March 10, 1870; Lawrence James, who is <strong>the</strong> Waycross banker firstmentioned; Frosty Bell, born May 13, 1873; Wade Hampton, born December5, 1874; Lucinda Caroline, born May 26, 1876; Eliza Jane, born in April,1878; Elizabeth, born December 7, 1879, <strong>and</strong> died in April, 1881; John P.,born June 30, 1881; Thomas Ebenezer, born in August, 1883; <strong>and</strong> Rebecca,born March 25, 1886. 'JOHN J. MOORE. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prominent younger members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bar atWaycross, John J. Moore is a native <strong>Georgia</strong>n, was admitted to <strong>the</strong> bar abouttwelve years ago, <strong>and</strong> his reputation for solid ability has been steadily extending over <strong>the</strong> district around Waycross.He was born in Clay County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, June 29, 1878, son <strong>of</strong> W. P. <strong>and</strong>Hattie (Gash) Moore. His parents were born in North Carolina <strong>and</strong> cameto <strong>Georgia</strong> after <strong>the</strong>ir marriage <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r was for many years an activefarmer in Clay County. During <strong>the</strong> war he was captain <strong>of</strong> a cavalry company from North Carolina, <strong>and</strong> though in active service for three years wasnever wounded. He is now eighty-five years <strong>of</strong> age <strong>and</strong> lives near Hazel inClay County. The mo<strong>the</strong>r has attained <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> seventy-six.The sixth in a family <strong>of</strong> ten children, John J. Moore grew up on hisfa<strong>the</strong>r's farm in Clay County, attended public school at Hiawassee <strong>and</strong> wasgraduated in 1904 LL. B. from <strong>the</strong> law department <strong>of</strong> Mercer University.During <strong>the</strong> next five years he was in practice at Willacoochee, but in January,1909, removed to Waycross. He was an active member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> County BarAssociation, is a democrat <strong>and</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Methodist Episcopal Church.His <strong>of</strong>fices are in <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Building.On May 5, 1900, at Hiawassee he married Minnie V. Brown. Three children have been born to <strong>the</strong>m: Cecil, born in 1903 at Hiawassee <strong>and</strong> attendingschool at Waycross; John Aubrey, born in 1906 at Willacoochee, <strong>and</strong> also inschool; <strong>and</strong> Hattie, born in 1910 at Waycross.J. K. BURKHALTER. Undoubtedly one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best newspapers <strong>of</strong> JenkinsCounty is <strong>the</strong> Millen News, which in <strong>the</strong> last two years has grown <strong>and</strong> developed in scope <strong>and</strong> usefulness under <strong>the</strong> management <strong>of</strong> J. K. Burkhalter.Mr. Burkhalter's entire career has been passed in connection with journalisticeffort, <strong>and</strong> he has also found time to engage in <strong>the</strong> organization <strong>and</strong> management <strong>of</strong> county fairs, being at <strong>the</strong> present time manager <strong>of</strong> five <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se organizations. He is a native <strong>Georgia</strong>n, born in Tattnall County, October 14,1882, <strong>and</strong> is a son <strong>of</strong> J. W. <strong>and</strong> Eveline (DeLoach) Burkhalter.J. W. Burkhalter was born in Tattnall County, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re has passed hisentire life in agricultural operations, still living <strong>the</strong>re at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty years.The mo<strong>the</strong>r passed away in that community in 1886, when but twenty-eightyears <strong>of</strong> age. There were four children in <strong>the</strong> family: C. P., a resident oi:Glennville; J. V., who died July 18, 1915; J. K.; <strong>and</strong> Miss Geneva, who diedin April, 1904. After graduating from <strong>the</strong> high school at Reidsville, <strong>Georgia</strong>,J. K. Burkhalter entered a newspaper <strong>of</strong>fice at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> twenty years. In <strong>the</strong>
