3006 GEORGIA AND GEORGIANS80 per cent of the case tried by him. As to the present position occupied byhim in his profession, and the general success which has attended his efforts,no clearer idea could be given than to quote the following, taken from a recentissue of the Greensboro Herald Journal, published in an adjoining county, and edited by that dean of Georgia Journalism, "Uncle Jeems" Williams:"Col. Alvin Golucke of Crawfordville was in the city yesterday on business.Colonel Golucke is one of the very best lawyers in this section of Georgia, and whenever he tries a case we always like to attend the trial.''On June 29, 1909, Mr. Golucke was united in marriage with Miss CarolynReid of Grawfordville, a daughter of the late Senator W. R. Reid. Theyhave one child, Anna Kathrine, .who was born on August 2, 1910. Mr. andMrs. Golucke are members of the Crawfordville Presbyterian Church.Mr. Golucke is a democrat, is a loyal party man, and has a wide circle ofpolitical friends. For six years he has served as. and still is, secretary of thedemocratic executive committee of his county, and in 1912 to 1914 he servedas a member of the state democratic executive committee. At the Macon convention of 1916 he was again elected to serve on the state democratic executivecommittee for the term of 1916 to 1918.Mr. Golucke is a Mason, is a member of the Chapter at Warrenton, and amember of the Commandery at Athens. He is a Shriner. But his professional life consumes only his working day, eight hours, andit is after we leave his professional activities that we wonder at the variedintellectual interests of the man. It is evident that Mr. Golucke has beenimpressed with that worthy conviction that a man of attainments should notlimit his influence and services to the narrow routine of a profession. Out ofthe wealth of his experiences and his observations he has been able to do a greatgood and in various ways. The main part about this is that it seems he takespleasure in doing it. On May 22, 1916, in speaking at the Tenth DistrictAgricultural and Mechanical School, where he delivered the CommencementAddress, he said: " I have had that experience, and reached that age, where Isee much of the injustices and inequalities of life, and it becomes clearer andclearer to me, as I jog along life's journey, that I can render no greater serviceto my fellow man than to help him obtain that equality and justice to which heis entitled."Mr. Golucke is a trustee of the Tenth District Agricultural College, andsomething more than a routine performance of duty has characterized his workas trustee. A little pamphlet that has come to the attention of the writer ofthis article is made up of a few letters which he wrote at different times to theprincipal of that school, containing a number of practical suggestions and avaluable educational policy and philosophy which, to the advantage of theschool, have been adopted and largely carried out in its operations. Theseletters might be read with profit by educators everywhere, and while of coursea liberal quotation from them can not be made in this connection, there are oneor two paragraphs which illustrate how clearly and effectively Mr. Goluckewrites and speaks. A better statement of the relative value of the school andthe teacher was never put into words than in the following two paragraphs:"You might build a school house of marble and furnish it in mahogany andset it in a grove of orange blossoms and palm trees, and put in it a hundredmaps-and a thousand books, and if you didn't get the right sort of teacherit would all be wasted. But get the right sort of teacher, and even though youcan not give him anything to teach in but an old out-house, and no equipmentbut a piece of chalk, yet he will turn out men and women who will take theirproper place in the world, and make you proud. The main thing isthe teacher.''Mr. Golucke has written and spoken for the past six years along educational and agricultural lines, trying to awaken the people of the South to thenew methods of farming. These efforts on his part have been highly com-
