GEOKGIA AND GEORGIANS 3005in <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> ,Mr. Grubbs was <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> his son, Louie, who was <strong>the</strong> idol <strong>of</strong>liis parents, his fa<strong>the</strong>r's almost inseparable companion, a general favorite with,his playmates, <strong>and</strong> an exceptionally bright student, being at <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> hisclass at school. His death was caused by typhoid fever, which he contractedwhile away from home, <strong>and</strong> his death occurred in an Atlanta hospital, whencehe had been taken in a vain attempt to save his. life.ALVIN GORDON GOLUCKE. Endowed by nature with talents that educational advantages <strong>and</strong> personal effort have rapidly brought to public attention, Alvin Gordon Golucke, <strong>of</strong> Crawfordville, <strong>Georgia</strong>, has advanced far on<strong>the</strong> road to legal fame although he has not. yet passed <strong>the</strong> border <strong>of</strong> middlelife. He is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Taliaferro County bar, <strong>and</strong> one who comm<strong>and</strong>s alarge, important, <strong>and</strong> lucrative practice.Alvin Gordon Golucke was born at Crawfordville, <strong>Georgia</strong>, August 13,1884, <strong>and</strong> is a son <strong>of</strong> C. H. <strong>and</strong> Annie (Roberts) Golucke. On <strong>the</strong> paternalside <strong>the</strong> family ancestry reaches to Germany, <strong>the</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r having beenborn in <strong>the</strong> Province <strong>of</strong> Westphalia. In youth he joined <strong>the</strong> young students<strong>of</strong> Germany to establish <strong>the</strong>re a Republic, but <strong>the</strong> effort failing he came, to <strong>the</strong>United States in 1848, along with Carl Selmrz <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>and</strong> located inWashington, Wilkes County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, where he subsequently married LeonoraWingfield <strong>of</strong> that county, she being a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> well known <strong>and</strong> numerousfamily <strong>of</strong> that name. The maternal gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r married Annie Crawford,<strong>of</strong> Columbia County, <strong>and</strong> she, too, being a member <strong>of</strong> a well known <strong>Georgia</strong>famjly. Mr. Roberts was killed in battle in <strong>the</strong> closing year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civilwar, being survived by his infant daughter, Annie, born in 1864 <strong>and</strong> laterbecoming <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> C. H. Golucke.C. H. Golucke was born in Washington, Wilkes County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, August31,1864, on <strong>the</strong> same day on which occurred <strong>the</strong> birth <strong>of</strong> his wife in <strong>the</strong> adjoining county, Taliaferro. Their two children, Alvin G. <strong>and</strong> Ralph W. bothsurvive. Mr. C. H. Golucke is engaged in <strong>the</strong> lumber business at Crawfordville, a substantial man <strong>of</strong> affairs <strong>and</strong> prominent in public life, for a number.<strong>of</strong> terms serving as clerk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Superior Court <strong>of</strong> Taliaferro County, which<strong>of</strong>fice for some time past has been <strong>and</strong> now is held by his son Ralph W.Alvin Gordon Golucke attended <strong>the</strong> public schools, <strong>and</strong> after completing<strong>the</strong> Stephens High School at Crawfordville, entered <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>,at A<strong>the</strong>ns* The law being his choice <strong>of</strong> career, his talents pointing unmistakably in that direction, his course <strong>of</strong> study at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>was directed with that end in view. Upon <strong>the</strong> graduation <strong>of</strong> his class in 1904,Mr. Golucke took up <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> law proper, <strong>and</strong> after passing <strong>the</strong> State BarExaminations for December, 1904, was admitted to <strong>the</strong> bar <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>.Before beginning to practice law, <strong>and</strong> after his admission to <strong>the</strong> bar, Mr.Golucke served an apprenticeship in a large law <strong>of</strong>fice in Atlanta for twoyears, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n spent ano<strong>the</strong>r two years doing editorial law work for <strong>the</strong>Edward Thompson Publishing Company, in New York.In September, 1908, Mr. Golucke entered upon <strong>the</strong> general practice <strong>of</strong> law,opening an <strong>of</strong>fice at Crawfordville, <strong>the</strong> place where he was born <strong>and</strong> raised,preferring to spend his life in a quiet <strong>and</strong> simple way among <strong>the</strong> people heknew so well. Because <strong>of</strong> his thorough preparation for <strong>the</strong> law, he soonbegan to develop a large civil practice, which frequently takes him into adjoining counties, <strong>and</strong> today he enjoys <strong>the</strong> distinction <strong>of</strong> being <strong>of</strong>fered employment in nearly every civil case tried in his county. He soon developed anunusual effectiveness as a jury lawyer, <strong>and</strong> this has resulted in his employment in every murder case tried in his county since 1910.From 1910 to 1912 Mr. Golucke served as solicitor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> county court<strong>of</strong> Taliaferro County, <strong>and</strong> upon <strong>the</strong> completion <strong>of</strong> his term <strong>of</strong> service, <strong>the</strong>gr<strong>and</strong> jury <strong>of</strong> his county, in <strong>the</strong>ir general presentments, commende.d him for<strong>the</strong> service rendered, <strong>and</strong> called attention to <strong>the</strong> fact that he had convictedVol. VI—15
