3000 GEORGIA AND GEORGIANSten years has immersed him in a large volume <strong>of</strong> law business <strong>and</strong> real estatetransactions, <strong>and</strong> he is recognized as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> young <strong>and</strong> very progressivecitizens <strong>of</strong> that section.He was born in Worth County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, September 18, 1882, a son <strong>of</strong> W. A.<strong>and</strong> Susan (Henderson) Story. His fa<strong>the</strong>r was born in Dooly County <strong>and</strong>his mo<strong>the</strong>r in Irwin County. The paternal gr<strong>and</strong>parents were W. J. <strong>and</strong>Adeline (Royal) Story, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> former came from North Carolina as a boywith his parents <strong>and</strong> located in Dooly County among <strong>the</strong> pioneers. During<strong>the</strong> war W. J. Story was a Confederate soldier <strong>and</strong> during <strong>the</strong> greatei; part<strong>of</strong> his active career had a plantation. The maternal gr<strong>and</strong>parents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Ashburn lawyer were J. J. <strong>and</strong> Susan (Whiddon) Henderson, who wereamong <strong>the</strong> first settlers <strong>of</strong> Irwin County, <strong>and</strong> J. J. Henderson served with<strong>the</strong> rank <strong>of</strong> captain in <strong>the</strong> Confederate army. He was a stock farmer by occupation. W. A. Story is still living in Worth County at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty <strong>and</strong>has for many years been a farmer <strong>and</strong> planter in that section. His wife diedin August, 1910, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> forty-six.John J. Story is one <strong>of</strong> two children, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> only one still living. As aboy he attended public schools at Sycamore <strong>and</strong> Ashburn, spent one year inEmory College, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n entered Mercer University, where he was graduatedLL. B. in 1904 <strong>and</strong> admitted to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> bar in <strong>the</strong> same year. Beginningpractice at Ashburn, he soon showed his ability in his early case's, <strong>and</strong> for anumber <strong>of</strong> years has h<strong>and</strong>led a substantial general practice toge<strong>the</strong>r with aconsiderable real estate business. Before entering college he taught schoolone term, <strong>and</strong> has usually depended upon his own faculties to advance himin life.Mr. Story has served as solicitor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city court at Ashburn, <strong>and</strong> is nowcity clerk <strong>and</strong> treasurer, an <strong>of</strong>fice he has attended to for <strong>the</strong> past eight years.He is a democrat, a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Turner County Bar Association, is aRoyal Arch Mason, <strong>and</strong> also an Odd Fellow.On June 30, 1914, at Tiffin, Ohio, he married Miss Rhoda Van Buskirk,daughter <strong>of</strong> Don <strong>and</strong> Cora Van Buskirk, a well known family <strong>of</strong> Tiffin, Ohio.M. J. CROCKETT, M. D. The dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Worth County medical fraternity,Dr. M.- J. Crockett has resided in this section for forty years, having comehere prior to <strong>the</strong> time that Worth County was formed from Dooly County.At that time he was a young medical practitioner looking for a location inwhich his abilities would be appreciated, <strong>and</strong> in this thinly-settled communityhe found <strong>the</strong> opportunity which he sought. Today he is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leadingmedical men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> county, a. highly respected member <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>ession, <strong>and</strong>a man to whom honors have come in pr<strong>of</strong>usion.Doctor Crockett is not a native son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Southl<strong>and</strong>, but as two-thirds <strong>of</strong>his life has been passed here he feels himself a thorough <strong>Georgia</strong>n. He wasborn near Logansport, Indiana, April 24, 184:5, <strong>and</strong> is a son <strong>of</strong> David <strong>and</strong>Lorasia (Smith) Crockett, natives <strong>of</strong> Ohio, who moved to Indiana as youngpeople <strong>and</strong> were <strong>the</strong>re married. Their subsequent lives were passed in <strong>the</strong>Hoosier State, in a farming community, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r, a well-to-do <strong>and</strong>industrious agriculturist passed away in 1853, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> forty-five years,<strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r surviving until 1908, when she passed away at <strong>the</strong> remarkable age<strong>of</strong> ninety-two years. They were <strong>the</strong> parents <strong>of</strong> five children', <strong>of</strong> whom M. J.was <strong>the</strong> fourth in order <strong>of</strong> birth.M. J. Crockett received his early education in <strong>the</strong> country schools in <strong>the</strong>vicinity <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r's Indiana farm, <strong>and</strong> early evidenced an inclination toenter pr<strong>of</strong>essional life. After some preparation, he enrolled as a student at<strong>the</strong> Eclectic Medical College <strong>of</strong> Cincinnati, Ohio, <strong>and</strong> subsequently he transferred his membership to <strong>the</strong> Miami Medical College, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same city, wherehis degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Medicine was obtained in 1870. For a short period<strong>the</strong>reafter, <strong>the</strong> young physician practiced with his preceptor in Logans-
