Austin, who was sheriff <strong>of</strong> Rockdale County for twenty years, Mrs. Austindying in Conyers in 1905; <strong>and</strong> Josephine Kate, who died at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixteen.To Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Vaughn have been born seven children: David Henry,who died in infancy; Howard Gordon, who was born on <strong>the</strong> old homesteadSeptember 10, 1886, <strong>and</strong> is now a merchant at Conyers; Clarence Rowl<strong>and</strong>,who was born in Newton County near Salem Camp Grounds June 8, 1891,was graduated from <strong>the</strong> law department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> in1914, <strong>and</strong> is now in practice at Conyers; Bessie Kate, who was born on <strong>the</strong>old homestead June 10, 1893, was graduated valedictorian <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> 1910at <strong>the</strong> Conyers High School, <strong>and</strong>, died September 19, 1911, while in <strong>the</strong>senior class <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> college at Milledgeville; Louis C<strong>and</strong>ler, born in NewtonCounty March 10, 1896, who graduated valedictorian at <strong>the</strong> Conyers HighSchool; James Anderson, born at Conyers January 30, 1898, a student in <strong>the</strong>ninth grade; <strong>and</strong> Annie Lucy, born in Conyers January 1, 1900, <strong>and</strong> also astudent in <strong>the</strong> ninth grade. The son Howard has served as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>city council at Conyers two terms, is chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sanitary committee,<strong>and</strong> is affiliated with <strong>the</strong> Masonic fraternity, <strong>the</strong> Knights <strong>of</strong> Pythias <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>Columbian Woodmen. The son Clarence is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Masonic order,<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Columbian Woodmen Order. Mrs. Vaughn has long been a progressive factor in women's circles <strong>and</strong> work in Conyers, is active in <strong>the</strong> MethodistEpiscopal Church, a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civic League <strong>and</strong> Missionary Society, <strong>and</strong>also an active member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eastern Star Lodge.CLAUDE WOREEL.L. A member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Upson County bar for nearly thirtyyears, Claude Worrell, <strong>of</strong> Thomaston, is generally acknowledged to possess aready <strong>and</strong> sound judgment in broad <strong>and</strong> intricate matters <strong>of</strong> civil <strong>and</strong> criminaljurisprudence, <strong>and</strong> his knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law, with its logical, earnest <strong>and</strong>forceful presentation, contribute to <strong>the</strong> eminent <strong>and</strong> substantial nature <strong>of</strong>his reputation.Mr. Worrell was born at Thomaston, Upson County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, May 14,1863, <strong>and</strong> is a son <strong>of</strong> Amos <strong>and</strong> Frances Am<strong>and</strong>a (Stewart) Worrell. Hispaternal gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r was a native <strong>of</strong> North Carolina, who founded <strong>the</strong>family in Upson County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, while on <strong>the</strong> maternal side <strong>the</strong> Stewartfamily was founded in this state by his great-gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r, who located inHancock County. Amos Worrell was born in <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> was for manyyears a successful merchant at Thomaston. A man <strong>of</strong> absolute integrity,he possessed in <strong>the</strong> fullest degree <strong>the</strong> confidence <strong>of</strong> his fellow-citizens, whoelected him to <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> ordinary <strong>of</strong> Upson County, in which responsiblecapacity he served with dignity <strong>and</strong> ability for nine years.Educated in <strong>the</strong> public schools <strong>of</strong> Thomaston, Claude Worrell receivedhis introduction to legal affairs) in <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r, who was <strong>the</strong>nserving as ordinary, <strong>and</strong> subsequently studied for <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession in various<strong>of</strong>fices, being admitted to <strong>the</strong> bar at Thomaston in July, 1886. His attentionhas since been occupied by <strong>the</strong> duties <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>ession, <strong>and</strong> he has receiveda generous share <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> important litigation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city involving bothprivate <strong>and</strong> corporate interests, having at this time a large <strong>and</strong> importantgeneral practice <strong>and</strong> being also attorney for <strong>the</strong> Central <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> PowerCompany. He has been a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> State Bar Association formany years, <strong>and</strong> among his fellow-practitioners, as well as <strong>the</strong> general public,is known as a thorough, reliable <strong>and</strong> learned legist. While his pr<strong>of</strong>essionalduties have been important <strong>and</strong> heavy, he has not been unmindful <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>duties <strong>of</strong> citizenship, <strong>and</strong> from 1907 until 1911 served Thomaston in <strong>the</strong>capacity <strong>of</strong> mayor, Ms administration being made notable by a number <strong>of</strong>civic achievements. Mr. Worrell is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Methodist EpiscopalChurch, <strong>and</strong> is at present serving as steward <strong>and</strong> as chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> board<strong>of</strong> trustees.
