The doctor is a communicant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Protestant EpiscopalChurch, <strong>and</strong> his wife holds membership in <strong>the</strong> Presbyterian Church, as doesshe also in <strong>the</strong> United Daughters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Confederacy, both being popular <strong>and</strong>valued factors in <strong>the</strong> representative social activities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir home city.On <strong>the</strong> 25th <strong>of</strong> September, 1907, was solemnized <strong>the</strong> marriage <strong>of</strong> DoctorMorton to Miss Mary L. Womack, who likewise was born at Keysville, Virginia, but who was reared in <strong>the</strong> fair old City <strong>of</strong> Richmond, that state, whereher fa<strong>the</strong>r, Frank Womack, is a representative business man,HENRY REEVES. The pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law is a good test <strong>of</strong> a man'snative ability <strong>and</strong> industry, for <strong>the</strong>re is no o<strong>the</strong>r that requires stronger mentality or more settled habits <strong>of</strong> hard work <strong>and</strong> perseverance in order to attaineven a reasonable success. One <strong>of</strong> its leading representatives in Troup Countyis <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> this memoir, Henry Reeves, who is now serving as solicitor<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city courts <strong>of</strong> La Grange. Mr. Reeves was born in Meriwe<strong>the</strong>r County,<strong>Georgia</strong>, July 26, 1872, <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> Madison <strong>and</strong> Mary (Render) Reeves, bothhis parents being natives <strong>of</strong> that county. The fa<strong>the</strong>r was a farmer by occupation <strong>and</strong> during <strong>the</strong> war a Confederate soldier. He owned a large plantation <strong>and</strong> conducted his farming operations on an extensive scale, being a wellknown <strong>and</strong> highly respected citizen. His death took place in 1904 when hehad attained' <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty-nine years. He had <strong>the</strong>n been a widower for anumber <strong>of</strong> years, his wife having passed away at <strong>the</strong> age- <strong>of</strong> forty-nine,December 20, 1886. She was <strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> Robert L. <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth(Anderson) Render, natives <strong>of</strong> Wilkes County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, who settled in Meriwe<strong>the</strong>r County in <strong>the</strong> early forties, being among <strong>the</strong> early settlers in thatcounty. Mr. Render was an extensive planter. To Madison <strong>and</strong> Mary(Render) Reeves six children were born, one <strong>of</strong> whom, Robert, died at <strong>the</strong>age <strong>of</strong> two- years. The o<strong>the</strong>rs were: Wiley A., now engaged in <strong>the</strong> cottonwarehouse business in La Grange; Walter T., a wholesale grocer <strong>and</strong> banker,<strong>of</strong> Tupelo, Mississippi; Madison, a prominent farmer <strong>and</strong> merchant <strong>of</strong> Tupelo,Mississippi; Henry, <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> this sketch; <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth R., wife <strong>of</strong>J. F. Pope, <strong>of</strong> Wilsonville, Alabama.Henry Reeves acquired his literary education in <strong>the</strong> country schools <strong>of</strong>Meriwe<strong>the</strong>r County <strong>and</strong> at Mercer University, being graduated in law in1901. He <strong>the</strong>n began <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>ession in La Grange <strong>and</strong> in acomparatively short time had built up a good clientele. In 1903 he wasappointed by Governor Joseph M. Terrell solicitor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city courts 6fLa Grange <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> following year was elected to <strong>the</strong> same <strong>of</strong>fice, in whichhe has continued to serve up to <strong>the</strong> present time through successive re-elections. In May, 1916, he was elected mayor <strong>of</strong> La Grange, which <strong>of</strong>fice he nowholds. He has a good general practice outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city courts <strong>and</strong> is one<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leading attorneys on <strong>the</strong> Coweta Circuit. In religion Mr. Reeves is aBaptist <strong>and</strong> is serving as superintendent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baptist Sunday School. Hissociety affiliations are with <strong>the</strong> Masons, Knights <strong>of</strong> Pythias, Red Men <strong>and</strong> OddFellows. He is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> executive committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State SundaySchool Association. As a citizen he is public spirited <strong>and</strong> is always ready tocorrespond with outside parties seeking information in regard to local conditions. A man <strong>of</strong> gentlemanly instincts, educated <strong>and</strong> refined, he has a widecircle <strong>of</strong> friends who hold him in high esteem.Mr. Reeves was married June 12, 1906, to Miss Susie Thomas, <strong>of</strong> ChambersCounty, Alabama, a daughter <strong>of</strong> E. Walton <strong>and</strong> Samantha (Stanley) Thomas,residents <strong>of</strong> Prattwlle, that state. He <strong>and</strong> his wife are <strong>the</strong> parents <strong>of</strong> threechildren: Elizabeth, born March 25, 1907, in La Grange; Henry R., Jr.,born May 16, 1910, <strong>and</strong> Walton, born March 25, 1913. Mrs. Reeves is anactive member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Methodist Church.
