2974 GEORGIA AND GEORGIANSfa<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> army made it necessary that he, as <strong>the</strong> eldest child, should work<strong>and</strong> help support his mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> younger children. He remained on <strong>the</strong>home farm until 1872, at which time he came to Lithonia <strong>and</strong> invested hissmall capital in a mercantile establishment, which formed <strong>the</strong> nucleus for hispresent business, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leading enterprises <strong>of</strong> Lithonia. This has beendeveloped solely under Mr. Alm<strong>and</strong>'s management <strong>and</strong> according to his methods, <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>s today a monument to his progressiveness, energy <strong>and</strong> businessacumen. In addition he is largely engaged in farming operations, owning1,450 acres in one solid body in De Kalb County, which in 1914 produced 5,000bushels <strong>of</strong> corn <strong>and</strong> 250 bales <strong>of</strong> cotton, in addition to general produce <strong>and</strong>truck, <strong>and</strong> a high grade <strong>of</strong> cattle, hogs <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r stock. This property isimproved with modern <strong>and</strong> substantial buildings <strong>and</strong> its development has beena decided addition to agricultural interests in De Kalb County. Mr. Alm<strong>and</strong>has various o<strong>the</strong>r holdings, being vice president <strong>and</strong> a director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> People'sBank <strong>of</strong> Lithonia, which was organized in 1910 with a capital <strong>of</strong> $25,000.This is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> successful <strong>and</strong> substantial monetary institutions <strong>of</strong> thispart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state, its president being J. 0. Norris, <strong>and</strong> its cashier MarvinStarr. Mr. Alm<strong>and</strong>'s business interests have been <strong>of</strong> a nature to dem<strong>and</strong> hisconstant attention, but he has in some manner found time to give to his community's welfare, particularly in <strong>the</strong> line <strong>of</strong> education, which he has madehis chief hobby. For eight years he was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> school board <strong>of</strong>Lithonia <strong>and</strong> took a leading part in securing a splendid modern school system.He is a democrat in his political views, a Master Mason, <strong>and</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Methodist Episcopal Church, in which he is serving as steward, <strong>and</strong> fortwenty-three years has been superintendent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sunday school. He hasunbounded faith in <strong>the</strong> possibilities <strong>and</strong> future <strong>of</strong> De Kalb County, is one<strong>of</strong> his locality's most enthusiastic boosters, <strong>and</strong> at all times is ready to giveinformation to prospective settlers or investors.On June 18, 1877, Mr. Alm<strong>and</strong> was married at Lithonia, to Miss ClaraBond, daughter <strong>of</strong> Dr. W. P. <strong>and</strong> Sarah (Born) Bond. Doctor Bond was aleading physician <strong>of</strong> De Kalb County, <strong>and</strong> for two terms served as state senator <strong>of</strong> his district. Eight children were born to Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Alm<strong>and</strong>,namely: Sadie, who is <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> Dr. C. J. Tupper, <strong>of</strong> Lithonia; Miss Lulu,a resident <strong>of</strong> this city; Edgar, who was killed by <strong>the</strong> kick <strong>of</strong> a horse at <strong>the</strong> age<strong>of</strong> nine years; John P., a graduate <strong>of</strong> Columbia (New York) University,Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Emory College, <strong>Georgia</strong>, Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts, whopursued a special art course in 1909 <strong>and</strong> is now a prominent architect <strong>of</strong>Little Rock, Arkansas; H. G., a graduate <strong>of</strong> Emory College <strong>and</strong> now NewYork Exchange cashier <strong>of</strong> Central Corporation Bank <strong>of</strong> Atlanta; Claude, agraduate <strong>of</strong> Emory College, Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts, <strong>and</strong> now a student at <strong>the</strong>Atlanta College <strong>of</strong> Physicians <strong>and</strong> Surgeons; Bond, a graduate <strong>of</strong> EmoryCollege, Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> law department <strong>of</strong> Columbia University<strong>of</strong> New York, Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Laws; <strong>and</strong> Morris, who is still attending school.Both <strong>the</strong> daughters <strong>of</strong> Mr. Alm<strong>and</strong> are graduates <strong>of</strong> Wesleyan College. Mrs.Alm<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foregoing children, died December 25, 1913. Shewas a noble Christian woman <strong>of</strong> many accomplishments, <strong>and</strong> was greatlybeloved by all who knew her.JOSEPH MELL TRIBBLE, M. D. Twenty years <strong>of</strong> constant devotion to <strong>the</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> medicine has given Dr. Joseph Mell Tribble, <strong>of</strong> Lithonia, a place<strong>of</strong> prestige in a calling than which, in a comparison <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> relative value tomankind <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various pursuits <strong>and</strong> occupations to which men devote <strong>the</strong>iractivities <strong>and</strong> attention, <strong>the</strong>re is no more important. He is a native <strong>of</strong> WaltonCounty, <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> was born April 2, 1865, a son <strong>of</strong> Rev. Abram Kilby <strong>and</strong>Elizabeth (Smith) Tribble, being <strong>of</strong> German descent on <strong>the</strong> paternal side<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> English stock in <strong>the</strong> maternal line.Rev.
