In December, 1905, he becameassistant general counsel for <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Express Company, in December,1907, becoming general counsel <strong>and</strong> so continuing, <strong>and</strong> is also counsel for<strong>the</strong> Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company, for <strong>the</strong> Penn Mutrfal LifeInsurance Company <strong>and</strong> for <strong>the</strong> Anderson Hardware Company.Mr. Alston was married January 1, 1900, in Christ Episcopal Church,Savannah, to Miss Caro Laruar Du Bignon, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Hon. FlemingGrantl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Caro Nichol (Lamar) Du Bignon.Active <strong>and</strong> earnest as a citizen, Mr. Alston entertains pr<strong>of</strong>ound viewson public questions, supported, he believes, by <strong>the</strong> facts <strong>of</strong> history.He particularly enjoys <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> history <strong>and</strong> is something <strong>of</strong> an authorityon <strong>the</strong> early history <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r states. His heavy practice hasengaged his time closely for a number <strong>of</strong> years, practically precluding hisacceptance <strong>of</strong> political <strong>of</strong>fice, even if his inclinations lay in that direction,but he consented to serve one term as president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Young Men's Democratic League. Fraternally he is a Knight <strong>of</strong> Pythias <strong>and</strong> retains mem'bershipwith his old college fraternity, <strong>the</strong> Sigma Nu, <strong>and</strong> finds additionalrelaxation as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Capital City, <strong>the</strong> University <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> PiedmontDriving clubs, all <strong>of</strong> Atlanta. Public enterprises, especially <strong>of</strong> an educational character, are apt to claim his interest, <strong>and</strong> he has served as a trustee<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carnegie <strong>Library</strong> Association. Since 1907, when was created <strong>the</strong>Diocese <strong>of</strong> Atlanta <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Protestant Episcopal Church, Mr. Alston hasbeen its chancellor, <strong>and</strong> it was under his supervision that <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong>funds was accomplished between <strong>the</strong> new diocese <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Diocese <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>.Gifted with inborn ability <strong>and</strong> character, he has cherished his heritage <strong>and</strong>his life is satisfying <strong>and</strong> interesting, representing <strong>and</strong> illustrating as itdoes, a proper use <strong>of</strong> talents, acknowledgment <strong>of</strong> human responsibility,helpful sympathy for those in need <strong>and</strong> a bro<strong>the</strong>rhood that seeks to giveeach <strong>and</strong> every one an equal chance in life.HENRY J. Henry Jackson Fullbright as a representative member <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> legal pr<strong>of</strong>ession in his native state, as a legislator <strong>of</strong> distinctive loyalty,progressiveness <strong>and</strong> constructive ability, <strong>and</strong> as a citizen whose course liasbeen guided <strong>and</strong> governed by <strong>the</strong> inflexible principles that ever give assurance <strong>of</strong> sterling character <strong>and</strong> full sense <strong>of</strong> personal stewardship.Mr. Fullbright is a recognized leader <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bar <strong>of</strong> Eastern <strong>Georgia</strong>,<strong>and</strong> is engaged in <strong>the</strong> general practice <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>ession at Waynesboro,where he is serving as city attorney <strong>and</strong> also as county attorney <strong>of</strong> BurkeCounty, besides which he has been continued in service as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> aggressive, alert <strong>and</strong> influential members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Legislature since 1907.Such are <strong>the</strong> strong, upright <strong>and</strong> public-spirited citizens who speciallymerit consideration in this history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Empire State <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> South.Mr. Fullbright was born in Columbia County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, on <strong>the</strong> 26th <strong>of</strong> November, 1870, <strong>and</strong> his advancement has been gained through his own ability <strong>and</strong>well directed endeavors. He is a son <strong>of</strong> Green L. <strong>and</strong> Mary (Granade)Fullbright, both likewise natives <strong>of</strong> Columbia County <strong>and</strong> both representatives <strong>of</strong> old <strong>and</strong> honored families <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>. Green L. Fullbright was asou <strong>of</strong> Levi <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth (Roberts) Fullbright, <strong>and</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r, a native <strong>of</strong>Macon County, North Carolina, settled in Columbia County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, in <strong>the</strong>early thirties, <strong>the</strong>re becoming overseer <strong>of</strong> a large plantation. Elizabeth(Roberts) Fullbright was born <strong>and</strong> reared in Columbia County, this state,where she passed her entire life, her parents having been pioneers <strong>of</strong>that county.Green L. Fullbright was born in <strong>the</strong> year 1842 <strong>and</strong> died in his nativecounty <strong>of</strong> Columbia in 1914. His entire active career was one <strong>of</strong> closeidentification with <strong>the</strong> basic industry <strong>of</strong> agriculture, <strong>and</strong> he was a loyal <strong>and</strong>
