He served as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>State Legislature in 1871-72, <strong>and</strong> in 1880 was elected to <strong>the</strong> Senate. He wasalso judge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> County Court <strong>of</strong> Dooly County two terms. In February,1862, Judge Woodward with W. B. Busbee organized <strong>the</strong> Whittle Guards,which became Company D, Tenth <strong>Georgia</strong> Battalion. He declined to becomecaptain <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> company <strong>and</strong> served as tirst lieutenant instead. In August <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> same year his health failed <strong>and</strong> he was obliged to resign his commission.After <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> his wife, in July, 1863, he again joined <strong>the</strong> army at Macon,served with <strong>the</strong> rank <strong>of</strong> second lieutenant two months, when again ill healthobliged him to give up his commission. Judge Woodward was married threetimes. His first wife was Carrie Sheats, who died July 6, 1863. On July 18,1865, Judge Woodward married Miss Nancy B. McCormick, <strong>of</strong> Hawkinsville,<strong>Georgia</strong>. She was born in <strong>Georgia</strong> in 1841 <strong>and</strong> died December 17, 1895. Herchildren were: John M., William Thomas, James Madison, -David M., CharlesC., Mary Jane, wife <strong>of</strong> Charles H. Turton, Lucius Lamar, Carrie S., wife <strong>of</strong>Charles Gurr, <strong>and</strong> Emma B. Judge Woodward married for his third wife,.Emma Peacock, who died August 26, 1901.Lucius L. Woodward made rapid progress while attending <strong>the</strong> publicschools <strong>of</strong> Dooly County, but at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> thirteen he chose to becomedependent upon his own labors <strong>and</strong> exertions, <strong>and</strong> consequently leaving homefound work as clerk in a store at Vienna. In that way he paid for his ownsupport for four years, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n took up <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> law in <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> hisfa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Senator Crum. Beginning January 10, 1897, he applied himselfassiduously to <strong>the</strong> reading <strong>of</strong> law, <strong>and</strong> so successfully that he was admittedto practice on <strong>the</strong> following 15th <strong>of</strong> September. Though starting <strong>the</strong> work<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession so young, he quickly comm<strong>and</strong>ed confidence by his undoubtedability, <strong>and</strong> for many years has not only enjoyed high st<strong>and</strong>ing as a lawyerbut <strong>the</strong> esteem paid to a loyal <strong>and</strong> public spirited citizen. As one feature <strong>of</strong>his large private practice he is local counsel for <strong>the</strong> A. B. A. Railroad <strong>and</strong> forseveral smaller corporations in Dooly County.Mr. Woodward is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Bar Association <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>'Commercial Law League <strong>of</strong> America. Fraternally he is a Mason, <strong>and</strong> isaffiliated with <strong>the</strong> Mystic Shrine at Savannah. He has not sought politicalhonors but has worked wherever possible for <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> democraticparty <strong>and</strong> for good government in his own locality. Mr. Woodward is adirector <strong>and</strong> owns half <strong>the</strong> stock in <strong>the</strong> Vienna News. He is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Baptist Church, while his wife is a Methodist.On October 21, 1909, Mr. Woodward married Miss Mary Louie Fenn,daughter <strong>of</strong> Henry R. <strong>and</strong> Sarah Elizabeth (Collier) Fenn. Both her parentswere born in Dooly County. Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Woodward have three children:Elizabeth B., born at Vienna, August 29, 1910; Lamar Fenn, born February4, 1912; <strong>and</strong> Henry H., born August 27, 1913.F. E. WILLIAMS, M. D. By all <strong>the</strong> accepted st<strong>and</strong>ards for judgment, Dr.F. E. Williams is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> highly capable <strong>and</strong> successful physicians in hissection <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> has been in active practice at Vienna for <strong>the</strong> pasttwelve or thirteen years. He is graduated from a medical school <strong>of</strong> high st<strong>and</strong>ing, has had thorough experience in addition to many natural qualificationsfor his pr<strong>of</strong>ession, <strong>and</strong> has always associated with <strong>the</strong> best representatives <strong>of</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>essional life.A native <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, he was born at Ty Ty, Tift County, January 20,1881, a son <strong>of</strong> W. E..<strong>and</strong> Ca<strong>the</strong>rine (Gibbs) Williams. His parents were alsonatives <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, his fa<strong>the</strong>r born in Berrien County <strong>and</strong> his mo<strong>the</strong>r inWorth County. W. E. Williams has for many years been a successfulmerchant at Ty Ty, <strong>and</strong> still carried on a prosperous business at that point,in addition to considerable interests as a farmer. Both he <strong>and</strong> his wife areliving at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty-six. There were six children in <strong>the</strong> family, named
