2936 GEORGIA' AND GEORGIANS<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> Educational Association1 <strong>and</strong> for many years has been aleading member <strong>of</strong> similar bodies <strong>of</strong> a national <strong>and</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn scope. He is<strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> numerous addresses <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> several bills which have had animportant bearing on <strong>the</strong> progress <strong>of</strong> education in <strong>Georgia</strong>.W. C. TIPTON, M. D. A representative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> medical pr<strong>of</strong>ession in WorthCounty who has risen to a position <strong>of</strong> prominence by reason <strong>of</strong> his superiorability <strong>and</strong> high pr<strong>of</strong>essional attainments is Dr. W. C. Tipton, who has won<strong>the</strong> unqualified confidence <strong>of</strong> a wide practice <strong>and</strong> has been a factor1 in social<strong>and</strong> political affairs. Doctor Tipton is now chief surgeon for <strong>the</strong> Hawkinsville<strong>and</strong> Florida Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Railway at Sylvester, <strong>and</strong> in addition to his extensiveprivate practice he owns <strong>and</strong> operates a fine farm in "Worth County.He was born in Worth County, February 19, 1882, <strong>and</strong> thus his pr<strong>of</strong>essional career has been centered in <strong>the</strong> same locality where he spent his earlyyouth. His parents are Charles Greenherry <strong>and</strong> Sarah Frances (Ridley)Tipton, his fa<strong>the</strong>r a native <strong>of</strong> Dooly <strong>and</strong> his mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Worth County, <strong>Georgia</strong>,<strong>and</strong> now living in Worth County, <strong>the</strong> former at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixty-eight <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>latter at sixty-six. Charles G. Tipton during his early career was a teacher<strong>and</strong> fftr twelve years served as clerk <strong>of</strong> court for Worth County, since whichtime he has been engaged in farming. The parents had seven children: JamesHarrison, born in 1874; Alice D., born in 1876; John Leonard David, born in1878; Delia Frances, born in 1879; Dr. Walter Charles, who was fifth in order<strong>of</strong> birth; Benjamin Wallace Nicholas, born in 1884, <strong>and</strong> Thomas, who died at<strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> three months. All <strong>the</strong> children were born in Worth County.As a boy Doctor Tipton attended <strong>the</strong> public schools <strong>of</strong> Isabella, Sumner <strong>and</strong>Sylvester. Later he entered <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Physicians <strong>and</strong> Surgeons atAtlanta, <strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong>re transferred to <strong>the</strong> Atlanta School <strong>of</strong> Medicine, wherehe was graduated M. D. in 1908. He at once returned to Sylvester <strong>and</strong> almostfrom <strong>the</strong> start has enjoyed a paying <strong>and</strong>'promising private practice. He isnow serving as county physician <strong>of</strong> Worth County, is' a former secretary <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Worth County Medical Society, <strong>and</strong> belongs to <strong>the</strong> State Society <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>American Medical Association. He is a Baptist <strong>and</strong> in politics a democrat.On December 20, 1911, at Sylvester Doctor Tipton married Miss EllenCalvada Godwin, daughter <strong>of</strong> F. K. <strong>and</strong> Blauch Godwin, who came fromNorth Carolina <strong>and</strong> are still living in Worth County, <strong>Georgia</strong>. Doctor <strong>and</strong>Mrs. Tipton have two children: Walter Charles, Jr., born January 27, 1913;<strong>and</strong> Margaret Joyce, born January 30, 1915. Both <strong>the</strong> children are natives <strong>of</strong>Sylvester.L. D. PASSMORE. Of <strong>the</strong> men who have attained eminence in <strong>the</strong> legalpr<strong>of</strong>ession in Worth County through <strong>the</strong> medium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own talents <strong>and</strong>industry, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best known is L. D. Passmore, who has been engaged inpractice at Sylvester for more than fifteen years. At an early period <strong>of</strong> hispr<strong>of</strong>essional career he was fortunate in securing <strong>the</strong> confidence <strong>and</strong> esteem<strong>of</strong> those engaged in large affairs, <strong>and</strong> this he has always retained. No interests have been so important that those concerned with <strong>the</strong>ir management havehesitated to commit <strong>the</strong>m to him, when <strong>the</strong> occasion has arisen, ei<strong>the</strong>r forcounsel or <strong>the</strong> assertion or defense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir rights in <strong>the</strong> courts. Also, Mr.Passmore is widely known as a friend <strong>of</strong> education <strong>and</strong> as a progressive promoter <strong>of</strong> its best interests. Indeed, it was in an educational capacity that hefirst came to Sylvester, <strong>and</strong> since that time he has never lost interest in <strong>the</strong>work that makes for efficient training <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> young.L. D. Passmore was born in Taylor County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, August 23, 1868, <strong>and</strong>is a son <strong>of</strong> G. A. <strong>and</strong> Rebecca (Moore) Passmore, natives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cracker state.His fa<strong>the</strong>r was born in <strong>the</strong> County <strong>of</strong> Macon <strong>and</strong> was reared on a plantation,so that he became imbued with <strong>the</strong> atmosphere <strong>of</strong> agricultural work, <strong>and</strong> whenhe reached manhood adopted it as his vocation in life.
