GEORGIA AND GEORGIANS 2923Judge Graves was first married in 1874 in Lee County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, to MissMaggie Roberts, <strong>of</strong> Sumter County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Walker Roberts,a soldier <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Confederacy <strong>and</strong> later 'a leading <strong>and</strong> prominent planter <strong>of</strong>Sumter County. Mrs. Graves died in 1897, <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> three Children: Mrs.W. C. Hayes, who resides at Macon, <strong>Georgia</strong>; Mrs. C. 0. Hayes, also <strong>of</strong> thatcity; <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Rosa Harris, <strong>of</strong>-Lowndes County, <strong>Georgia</strong>. Judge Graveswas again married, in April, 1899, in Worth County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, to Miss LolaM. Ford, daughter <strong>of</strong> J. H. Ford, a planter <strong>of</strong> Worth County, <strong>Georgia</strong>.HUGH A. MACAULAY, M. D/ The true criterion <strong>of</strong> ability <strong>and</strong> skill in <strong>the</strong>exacting pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> medicine is <strong>the</strong> success achieved, <strong>and</strong> measured by thiseffective st<strong>and</strong>ard Doctor Macaulay is consistently to be designated as one<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> representative physicians <strong>and</strong> surgeons <strong>of</strong> Burke County, where hecontrols a large general practice, with residence <strong>and</strong> headquarters at Waynesboro,<strong>the</strong> county seat. His activities touch important business enterprisesalso, especially banking, <strong>and</strong> he is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> specially alert <strong>and</strong> progressivecitizens whose influence is potent in fur<strong>the</strong>ring <strong>the</strong> civic <strong>and</strong> materialadvancement <strong>and</strong> prosperity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fine little city that is <strong>the</strong> judicial center<strong>of</strong> Burke County.^Dr. Hugh Ang"us Macaulay, as both his personal <strong>and</strong> family names imply,is <strong>of</strong> sterling Scotch lineage, <strong>and</strong> he was born at Winnsboro, <strong>the</strong> capital town<strong>of</strong> Fairfield County, South Carolina, on <strong>the</strong> 5th <strong>of</strong> September, 1885, a son <strong>of</strong>Donald John Macaulay <strong>and</strong> Sally (Fleming) Macaulay, <strong>the</strong> former <strong>of</strong> whomwas born in Scotl<strong>and</strong>, in 1854, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter <strong>of</strong> whom was born in South Carolina, she likewise being <strong>of</strong> Scotch ancestry. Donald J. Macaulay was reared inhis native l<strong>and</strong>, where he received excellent educational advantages, but hecame to <strong>the</strong> United States prior to attaining to his majority. In 1872 whenabout eighteen years <strong>of</strong> age, he established his residence at Winnsboro, SouthCarolina, where his marriage was solemnized <strong>and</strong> 'where he continued his residence for a number <strong>of</strong> years. He finally removed to Chester, that state, wherehe continued his successful activities as a merchant until his death, whichoccurred in 1914. His widow soon afterward returned to her old home atWinnsboro, where she still resides. Of <strong>the</strong> five children Doctor Macaulay, <strong>of</strong>this review, is <strong>the</strong> eldest, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r four surviving children still reside in<strong>the</strong> South.Doctor Macaulay was a boy at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family removal to Chester,judicial center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> South Carolina County <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same name, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re heattended <strong>the</strong> public schools until he had prepared himself for entrance intoa higher institution <strong>of</strong> learning. He became a student in W<strong>of</strong>ford College, atSpartanburg, South Carolina, where he completed <strong>the</strong> full academic orliterary course <strong>and</strong> was graduated in 1904, with <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong>Arts. The higher discipline thus gained admirably fortified him for initiating his preparation for <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> his choice, <strong>and</strong> in consonance withhis ambmon he entered <strong>the</strong> medical department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Louisville, Kentucky, in which he was graduated as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> 1908<strong>and</strong> from which he received his degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Medicine. He fur<strong>the</strong>rreinforced himself by serving six months as interne in <strong>the</strong> university hospital,where he gained varied <strong>and</strong> specially effective clinical experience.In July, 1908, Doctor Macaulay established, his residence at Waynesboro,<strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> his technical ability, his close application <strong>and</strong> his personal popularity have combined to give him high st<strong>and</strong>ing in his pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>and</strong> enabledhim to build up an excellent general practice <strong>of</strong> representative order, his workextending into counties lying contiguous to Burke County.In 1913 Doctor Macaulay established <strong>and</strong> opened for business <strong>the</strong> excellently equipped drug store known as <strong>the</strong> St<strong>and</strong>ard Pharmacy, which controlsa substantial business <strong>and</strong> which is recognized as <strong>the</strong> most metropolitan establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kind in Waynesboro.
