2914 GEORGIA AND GEORGIANSMethodist Episcopal Church, South, <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Jordan is affiliated with <strong>the</strong> Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Daughters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Revolution <strong>and</strong> with <strong>the</strong> UnitedDaughters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Confederacy.On <strong>the</strong> 22d <strong>of</strong> December, 1907, was solemnized <strong>the</strong> marriage <strong>of</strong> Doctor Jordan to Miss Elizabeth Williams, <strong>of</strong> Buena Vista, Marion County. She is aydaughter <strong>of</strong> William <strong>and</strong> Mary (Rogers) Williams, <strong>the</strong> latter <strong>of</strong> whomis deceased <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> former <strong>of</strong> whom is now living retired, at Ellaville, <strong>Georgia</strong>.He was formerly one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most active <strong>and</strong> progressive representatives <strong>of</strong>agricultural industry in Marion County, where he still owns a valuable l<strong>and</strong>edestate <strong>of</strong> more than 3,000 acres. Doctor <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Jordan have one child, J.Rodolph, Jr., who was born on <strong>the</strong> 22d <strong>of</strong> September, 1908.JOHN L. HERRING. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best known newspaper men in Sou<strong>the</strong>rn<strong>Georgia</strong> is John L. Herring, proprietor <strong>and</strong> editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tifton Daily Gazetteat Tifton. Like many men in that pr<strong>of</strong>ession he started as a printer's devil,has -worked his way through all <strong>the</strong> grades <strong>and</strong> responsibilities, has set type,has stood at <strong>the</strong> case through a long apprenticeship, has held down an editor'schair, <strong>and</strong> for fully twenty years has been closely identified with <strong>the</strong> welfare<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> prosperity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gazette at Tifton, <strong>and</strong> has also been one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> live<strong>and</strong> enterprising citizens <strong>of</strong> that railroad center <strong>and</strong> county seat.The Gazette was first established in 1891 at Sparks, <strong>Georgia</strong>, being <strong>the</strong>nknown as <strong>the</strong> Pioneer. Its first proprietor was Mr. B. T. Alien, who a yearlater removed <strong>the</strong> plant'to Tifton <strong>and</strong> renamed <strong>the</strong> paper <strong>the</strong> Tifton Gazette.It has not missed an issue since it started at Tifton, <strong>and</strong> has been a very successful enterprise. Mr. Herring, <strong>the</strong> present owner <strong>and</strong> editor, was in <strong>the</strong>employ <strong>of</strong> Mr. Alien soon after <strong>the</strong> paper was removed to Tifton <strong>and</strong> sometime after <strong>the</strong> company was incorporated Mr. Herring bought a controllinginterest <strong>and</strong> has since directed <strong>the</strong> destiny <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> influence <strong>of</strong> this organ <strong>of</strong>public opinion in Tift County.John L. Herring was born at Albany, <strong>Georgia</strong>, December 8, 1866, a son <strong>of</strong>William Jasper <strong>and</strong> Rebecca (Paul) Herring. Both parents were natives <strong>of</strong>Macon County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, <strong>and</strong> William J. Herring was a prosperous merchantat Albany for some years, but later moved to Isabella where he continued merch<strong>and</strong>ising. He died in 1914 at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> eighty. In 1862 he enlisted as aprivate for service in <strong>the</strong> Confederate army <strong>and</strong> was a gunner in <strong>the</strong> JacksonLight Artillery with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> troops. His mo<strong>the</strong>r died in November, 1912,at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> seventy-six. Mr. Herring had ano<strong>the</strong>r son, W. J. Herring, Jr.,who died in 1905.John L. Herring grew up in Worth County, attended <strong>the</strong> common schools<strong>the</strong>re, but at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixteen began his apprenticeship at <strong>the</strong> printer's tradein <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Worth Star. For a time he was with his fa<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> mercantile business, but practically his entire career has been spent in printing<strong>and</strong> newspaper work. February 1, 1895, he came to Tifton to take a positionon <strong>the</strong> Gazette <strong>and</strong> since July <strong>of</strong> that year has been in active charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>paper, most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time as proprietor.He is chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> county democratic committee <strong>and</strong> is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>board <strong>of</strong> trustees <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local hospital. Fraternally he is affiliated with <strong>the</strong>Benevolent <strong>and</strong> Protective Order <strong>of</strong> Elks, <strong>the</strong> Independent Order <strong>of</strong> Odd Fellows, <strong>the</strong> Royal Arcanum <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Woodmen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> World. He <strong>and</strong> his familyworship in <strong>the</strong> Methodist Episcopal Church.On December 20, 1886, Mr. Herring married Miss Mattie Susan Greene,daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late John B. Greene. To <strong>the</strong>ir union have been born tenchildren. Louis B. Herring, born at Isabella, <strong>Georgia</strong>, is married <strong>and</strong> livesat Tifton. Mrs. F. E. Rogers, also a native <strong>of</strong> Isabella, has four children.John G. Herring resides at Albany, where he is city editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Herald. Hehas three children.
