GEORGIA AND GEORGIANS 2913gallant soldier <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Confederacy in <strong>the</strong> Civil war, in which he was a member<strong>of</strong> a Oeorgia regiment. Judge Cullen L. Battle, maternal gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>Doctor Jordan, was a< prominent lawyer <strong>of</strong> ScMey County, where he servedfour years as judge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> court <strong>of</strong> ordinary <strong>and</strong> where he was an honored<strong>and</strong> influential citizen <strong>of</strong> Ellaville for many years prior te his death, whichhere occurred in 1903, when he was nearly eighty-five .years <strong>of</strong> age. Heserved many years as justice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> peace <strong>and</strong> was a man <strong>of</strong> sterling character<strong>and</strong> fine intellectual ken. His wife, whose family name was Countryman,was a native <strong>of</strong> Schley County <strong>and</strong> she preceded him to <strong>the</strong> life eternal. Sidney J. Jordan, who is now living virutally retired, devoted <strong>the</strong> major part<strong>of</strong> his active career to. agricultural pursuits, in connection with which hegained distinctive success. Both he <strong>and</strong> his wife are zealous members .<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Methodist Church at Ellaville, <strong>and</strong> his political convictions are indicated by.<strong>the</strong> staunch support which he gives to <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> democratic party.Of <strong>the</strong> four children Doctor Jordan, <strong>of</strong> this sketch, is <strong>the</strong> youngest; CeolaC., eldest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> number, is a progressive <strong>and</strong> substantial agriculturist <strong>of</strong>Schley County; William Cullen is engaged in successful farming operationsin Sumter County; <strong>and</strong> E. Ronley is engaged in <strong>the</strong> automobile <strong>and</strong> stockbusiness at Ellaville.In formulating his plans for a future career Doctor Jordan was animatedby high ambition <strong>and</strong> resolute purpose, as he determined to prepare himselffor <strong>the</strong> medical pr<strong>of</strong>ession, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most exacting <strong>and</strong> responsible vocations to which a man can give attention. He entered <strong>the</strong> Atlanta College<strong>of</strong> Physicians <strong>and</strong> Surgeons, in which he completed <strong>the</strong> prescribed technicalcourse <strong>and</strong> was graduated as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> 1902. After thus receiving his degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Medicine he fur<strong>the</strong>r fortified himself by <strong>the</strong> valuable clinical experience which he gained through serving six months as internein <strong>the</strong> Atlanta City Hospital, <strong>and</strong> in 1911 .he completed an effective post-graduate course in <strong>the</strong> celebrated New York Poly clinic Medical School <strong>and</strong>Hospital, where he remained six months. In <strong>the</strong> spring <strong>of</strong> 1916 he againevidenced his ambition to keep fully in advance with most modern <strong>and</strong> approved methods exemplified in medical <strong>and</strong> surgical science, for he <strong>the</strong>n completed a four weeks' special post-graduate course in <strong>the</strong> medical department<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great Johns Hopkins University, in <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Baltimore, Maryl<strong>and</strong>,<strong>and</strong> did additional work at New York in <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>of</strong> 1916.In 1903 Doctor Jordan initiated <strong>the</strong> active practice <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>ession atEllaville, <strong>and</strong> in this field, far from being one <strong>of</strong> metropolitan type, he hasbrought to bear <strong>the</strong> fine resources <strong>of</strong> a thoroughly skilled physician <strong>and</strong>surgeon, <strong>the</strong> while his success has caused his reputation to far transcend merelocal limitation <strong>and</strong> to give him precedence as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> essentially representative physicians <strong>and</strong> surgeons <strong>of</strong> his native commonwealth. He controls avery large practice <strong>and</strong>, as previously noted, has been remarkably successfulin <strong>the</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong> pellagra. In connection with his pr<strong>of</strong>essional activitieshe owns <strong>and</strong> conducts <strong>the</strong> leading drug store <strong>of</strong> Ellaville, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> same isreally metropolitan in its appointments, equipment <strong>and</strong> facilities. The doctoris a cultured, genial <strong>and</strong> kindly gentleman who well upholds <strong>the</strong> fine old socialtraditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> South, <strong>and</strong> his circle <strong>of</strong> friends is practically coincident withthat <strong>of</strong> his acquaintances.Doctor Jordan is actively identified with <strong>the</strong> American Medical Association, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> State Medical Society, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sumter County Medical Society, <strong>of</strong> which last mentioned organization he has served as vice president.Ilis political allegiance is given to <strong>the</strong> democratic party; in <strong>the</strong> Masonic fraternity he has advanced to chivalric honors, as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> KnightsTemplar at Ellaville, besides being affiliated with <strong>the</strong> Temple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AncientArabic Order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nobles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mystic Shrine at Americus, <strong>and</strong> with <strong>the</strong>Ellaville Lodge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Knights <strong>of</strong> Pythias, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> local organization <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> "Woodmen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> World.
