2902 GEORGIA AND GEORGIANSFRANK E. CADL.AWAY. While one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most prominent figures in <strong>the</strong>Atlanta bar during <strong>the</strong> last twenty years, <strong>and</strong> master in chancery to <strong>the</strong> Federal Court, a great number <strong>of</strong> people associate <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Frank E. Callawaymost familiarly with <strong>the</strong> domain <strong>of</strong> clean athletics in his capacity as president<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Atlanta Baseball Association.Born at West Point, <strong>Georgia</strong>, April 9, 1870, he is a son <strong>of</strong> S. P. <strong>and</strong> Ellen(Patillo) Callaway, <strong>the</strong> former a native <strong>of</strong> La Grange <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter <strong>of</strong> HarrisCounty, <strong>Georgia</strong>. Mr. Callaway was fortunate in a heritage <strong>of</strong> good qualitiesfrom both sides <strong>of</strong> his family, was reared in a home <strong>of</strong> ideals <strong>and</strong> abidinginfluences for good, <strong>and</strong> was also fortunate in his choice <strong>of</strong> his career. Afterattending <strong>the</strong> public schools <strong>and</strong> graduating from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>with <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> 1890, he took up <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> law <strong>and</strong> began practice notlong after he attained his majority. An experience which brought him into<strong>the</strong> higher domain <strong>of</strong> public life, where he has ever since been an influentialfigure, was his service as private secretary to Governor W. Y. Atkinson from1894 to 1898. In that time he showed his practical ability as a political organizer, <strong>and</strong> exercises a strong influence in <strong>the</strong> ranks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> democratic partyin <strong>Georgia</strong>. The appointment as private secretary also brought him toAtlanta, <strong>and</strong> that city has since been his home <strong>and</strong> he enjoys a splendid privatepractice in addition to his duties as master in chancery. His <strong>of</strong>fices are in <strong>the</strong>Third National Bank Building.While in college Mr. Callaway excelled as a baseball player, <strong>and</strong> that interest has been one that has remained with him in his mature career. It was hisenthusiastic support <strong>of</strong> local baseball that brought him <strong>the</strong> presidency <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Atlanta Baseball Association. He has a keen knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sport, <strong>and</strong>has been exceedingly successful in building up <strong>and</strong> maintaining <strong>the</strong> AtlantaClub. He has done much to foster this national pastime, <strong>and</strong> is regarded asone <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ablest baseball executives in <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>astern states. He is alsoidentified by membership with <strong>the</strong> Capital City Club, <strong>the</strong> Piedmont DrivingClub, <strong>the</strong> Atlanta Athletic <strong>and</strong> Brookhaven Country clubs. Mr. Callaway<strong>and</strong> family reside at 46 East Fourteenth Street. He was married in November, 1896, to Miss Helen Spencer <strong>of</strong> Columbus, <strong>Georgia</strong>. Their children arenamed Spencer <strong>and</strong> Helen.HON. JUDSON BEACH GEIGEB. The dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Montgomery County bar,ex-judge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>' city courts <strong>of</strong> Mount Vernon <strong>and</strong> a leader <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oconee Circuit, Hon. Judson Beach Geiger has written his name in strong <strong>and</strong> legiblecharacters upon <strong>the</strong> legal history <strong>of</strong> this part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state. During morethan a quarter <strong>of</strong> a century <strong>of</strong> practice at Mount Vernon his star <strong>of</strong> successhas been a constantly ascending one, his talents having responded fully to hisdeveloping faculties, ambitions <strong>and</strong> opportunities, while his gifts for usefulness have been stable <strong>and</strong> many-sided, having contributed materially to <strong>the</strong>welfare <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community in which he has chosen to make his home.Judge Geiger was born in Tattnall County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, March 20, 1864, amember <strong>of</strong> a family that was founded in America about six generations backby an emigrant from Germany, <strong>and</strong> a son <strong>of</strong> Rev. Washington Leonard <strong>and</strong>Ka<strong>the</strong>rine C. (Tillman) Geiger. His gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r, Jeremiah Geiger, was anative <strong>of</strong> North Carolina, who was married in South Carolina <strong>and</strong> later cameto Effingham County, <strong>Georgia</strong>, where he became a prominent planter <strong>and</strong>slaveholder <strong>and</strong> passed <strong>the</strong> remaining years <strong>of</strong> his life. Washington L. Geigerwas one <strong>of</strong> five children <strong>and</strong> was born in Effingham County, where he received his early education. He was prepared for <strong>the</strong> ministry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baptistfaith in Forsyth County, <strong>and</strong> became one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best-beloved ministers inSou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Georgia</strong>, having charges at Dublin <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r cities for many years.In addition to his ministerial work, he was greatly interested in <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong>education, <strong>the</strong> interests <strong>of</strong> which he forwarded in every possible way, <strong>and</strong>was <strong>the</strong> founder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Excelsior High School, at Excelsior, Bullock County.
