Her fa<strong>the</strong>ras now deceased <strong>and</strong> her mo<strong>the</strong>r is Mary E. Crittenden. Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Bunn have one child, Miss Mary Elizabeth Bunn, bornat Waycross in 1912.DAVID W. LEWIS, legislator, educator <strong>and</strong> patriot, was born in HaneockCounty,. October 24, 1815. In 1837 he was graduated from Franklin College,served as private secretary to Governor George R. Gilmer, <strong>and</strong> in 1843 wasadmitted to <strong>the</strong> bar. For ten years, commencing with 1845, he representedHancock County in <strong>the</strong> Legislature, <strong>and</strong> during that period became one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>founders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> State Agricultural Society. Of that institution hewas a charter member, secretary for many years <strong>and</strong> its third president.In 1855 he was appointed trustee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, whichplace he held consecutively for thirty years. In 1861 he was elected torepresent <strong>Georgia</strong> from <strong>the</strong> Fifth District in <strong>the</strong> First Confederate Congress.His last great work was his presidency <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> North <strong>Georgia</strong> AgriculturalCollege. He was its first president, from 1873 until <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> his death,December 28, 1885. A monument on <strong>the</strong> college campus was dedicated tohis memory in 1891.JOHN MclNTOSH KELL. In all its history <strong>Georgia</strong> has D'jver produced amore devoted patriot or a finer character than Capt. John Mclntosh Kell,a distinguished naval <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>and</strong> Confederate governments, <strong>and</strong> adjutant-general <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>. He was born in Darienon January 26, 1823, <strong>and</strong> in September, 1841, was commissioned a midshipman in <strong>the</strong> United States navy. Of <strong>the</strong> succeeding twenty years, seventeenwere passed in active service in every part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. In <strong>the</strong> war withMexico he saw service on <strong>the</strong> California coast; he participated in <strong>the</strong> expedition to Paraguay <strong>and</strong> was a member <strong>of</strong> Commodore Perry's staff in <strong>the</strong> historic expedition to Japan.The outbreak <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war between <strong>the</strong> states found him a junior lieutenant,stationed at Pensacola. He immediately resigned <strong>and</strong> threw in his lot with<strong>the</strong> Confederacy. His naval service under <strong>the</strong> Confederacy, from June, 1861,to June, 1864, was as executive <strong>of</strong>ficer under <strong>the</strong> famous Admiral RaphaelSemmes. His identification, during that period, with <strong>the</strong> famous Confederateraiders, Sumter <strong>and</strong> Alabama, is a romantic chapter in naval warfare. As iswell known, <strong>the</strong> latter was finally destroyed <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> coast <strong>of</strong> Cherbourg,France, June 19, 1864, by <strong>the</strong> Federal protected warship, <strong>the</strong> Kearsarge.Captain Kell made his way back to <strong>the</strong> Confederate capital through <strong>the</strong>blockade by way <strong>of</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong>, reaching home after an absence <strong>of</strong> three years<strong>and</strong> four months, to find his promotion to full captain, dated from <strong>the</strong> fightwith <strong>the</strong> Hatteras, <strong>and</strong> given for gallantry, awaiting him, <strong>and</strong> was placed incomm<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Richmond, an ironclad, on <strong>the</strong> James River. He was at hishome, Sunnyside, on sick leave when <strong>the</strong> Confederacy collapsed, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re hequietly remained for many years.In November, 1886, Governor Gordon tendered to Captain Kell <strong>the</strong> appointment <strong>of</strong> adjutant-general <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state, a position about to become vacantby <strong>the</strong> retirement <strong>of</strong> a disabled incumbent. He accepted <strong>the</strong> appointment,entered upon <strong>the</strong> discharge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> duties January 1,1887, found it a congenialwork, <strong>and</strong> spent <strong>the</strong> remaining years <strong>of</strong> his life in that position.HON. WILLIAM CLINTON HODGES. On <strong>the</strong> roster <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>astern <strong>Georgia</strong>'sable jurists is found <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Judge William Clinton Hodges, who hasattained distinctive preferment in <strong>the</strong> legal pr<strong>of</strong>ession.
