TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATIONSolutions for waste watertreatmentThe existing water treatment system in the market is unable to separate the hydrocarbons from the produced watercompletely, leaving remnants of 0.1% to 10%.Produced water, or waterassociated with reservoir fluids indrilling activities, comprises 98% ofthe waste water generated fromoil and gas operations. Over thepast decade, the increased outputof such waste water has arousedenvironmental concerns and poseda significant waste managementchallenge for oilfield operators.annually. Due to its potentialenvironmental impact, producedwater must be further treated forremaining hydrocarbons beforebeing discharged into the sea. Theallowed disposal concentrationvaries across countries.Another preferred methodof operators is to re-injectproduced water into a disposalwell. Contaminants, which couldotherwise plug the reservoir and/ordamage injection equipment, mustbe removed carefully.Recent studies have revealedthe presence of contaminantsin produced water in vicinity ofdischarge sites. Chronic exposureto such bioaccumulation andtoxicity of produced water wouldfurther impact the development ofmarine life.It is estimated that about19 billion barrels of producedwater are discharged to the oceanOffshore produced water disposal regulations24OffshoreMarine March – April 2011

TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATIONTypically, the produced water isseparated from the hydrocarbonsby passing the well streamthrough process equipmentsuch as three-phase separators, dehydrators, and/or a free-waterknockout vessel. These gravityseparation devices are unable toseparate the hydrocarbons fromthe produced water completely, leaving remnants of 0.1% to 10%.Innovative, environmentallyfocused and reliable methodsfor produced water treatmentare in great demand. The marketfor final stage produced watertreatment systems is estimated tobe around $4.3 billion for the nextfive years while the market forre-injection systems is around$9.8 billion over the same period.Currently, DPS Bristol, Keppel’sassociated process engineeringgroup in United Kingdom andKOMtech are collaboratingto develop a full range ofinnovative waste water treatmenttechnologies to address concernsthat are more cost effective andefficient than existing ones.DPS Bristol is experimentingwith new advanced centrifugetechnologies that is capableof separating oil, water, solid, gas and emulsion. Other DPSinnovative products includedeveloping a hydrocyclonemethod to achieve a much betterseparation of oil droplets fromproduced water. This enhancedmethod requires lower inletpressure, which in turn allowscustomers to save their operatingcosts.Once ready, these technologieswould help operators to minimiseoperating costs, maximisefootprint and energy efficiency, while maintaining productionand/or increasing oil recoveryrates.Offshore produced water disposal regulationsCountriesEcuador , ColombiaBrazilArgentina and VenezuelaIndonesiaMalaysia, Middle EastAngola, Cameroon, Ivory CoastNigeriaNorth SeaAustraliaThailandUSARussiaallowable disposal concentrations30 mg/l All facilities(previously 30 ppm) 20 mg/l All facilities15 mg/l New facilities25 mg/l Grandfathered facilities30 mg/l All facilities50 mg/l All facilities30 mg/l (follow North Sea OSPAR)(before 2006, 40 ppm) 30 mg/l All facilities30 mg/l All facilities50 mg/l All facilities(Zero discharge inland water) 29 mg/I OCS water(enclosed 0.05 ppm) 15 mg/l (Baltic Sea)*1 mg/l = 1 ppmOffshoreMarine March – April 201125
