While the recent oil spilland the subsequent US government moratoriumhave an immediate impact on deepwater drillingactivities in the Gulf of Mexico, the mid to longerterm consequence will be more safety regulationsand survey compliances for the offshore oil andgas industry. Potentially, this may result in theupgrading of existing rigs to meet the morestringent requirements and new rig orders toreplace the aging fl eet for drilling in deep waters. The Group is well-placed to leverage on theseopportunities with its proven track record andstrong turnkey rig construction capabilities. The fundamentals driving the offshore oil andgas sector remain intact with oil prices remainingabove the US$70 bbl range. Despite the volatileglobal environment, the Group continues toreceive enquiries but competition is very keen. For Brazil, the Group has tendered bids for sevenunits of drillships based on the exclusive JurongLMG drillship design and two units of semisubmersiblerigs based on the Friede & GoldmanExD design. The ship repair market continues to improvewith the bigger docks well-booked due to strongsupport from the Group’s Alliance/FCC andregular customers as well as its niche marketsegment of LNG carriers.Jul-Aug 201011
