XINHUA PUDONG (1st price)SHANGHAI PRCThe development location on the Huangpu river is located right across the Bund and in theinternational business district of Pudong. The low-carbon city development entails a 45 haarea and about 750.000 square meter of mixed urban program. An inclusive master plandevelopment strategy for the Xin Hua plot was made only two kilometers east of the famousShanghai broadcast tower. The aim of the master plan is to allow a simultaneous presence of public and private functionsalong the river board and to connect these to the urban hinterland. The plan aims at a stronginteraction between the park and the real estate development, so the people who work there, visitors and inhabitants feel the park serves as garden to the property. The small scale marinacomplex provides a heart for the area where the water, the park, the mixed-use development, the marina and the heritage come together in a vibrant mix. The individual buildings distinguishthemselves from other riverside projects as architectural landmarks in the Pudong skyline.Client:Design:Program:Visuals:Status:Huang Po riverboard development corporationJoost van den Hoek, Aron Bogers, Jeanet van Antwerpen, Nitagroup design team750.000 sq. meters Mixed useSHININGImplemented16XIN HUA PUDONG SHANGHAIPROJECTS 1998-2013XIN HUA PUDONG : A METROPOLITAN WATERFRONT NEXT TO THE TV TOWER17

7 RIVERS 8 ISLANDSYANGZHOU PRCThe strategic perpective comprises a riverland, now agricultural, that will transform into a metropolitanparkarea for the urban conglomeration of Yangzhou. The proposed transformation strategy does not result in a blueprint . Based on the currenteconomic activity in the area and the potential of the landscape, enterprises ad initiatives areproposed that will enleash the touristic and recreational potential of the area. Next to the touristicand recreational initiatives themes like organic farming eco recreation and green industryare addressed. Modern chinese citizens can experience the connection with their agriculturalpasts and futures. The plan is based on dutch references like hoge veluwe, centreparks andthe keukenhof. The resemblence of economical and landscape characteristics of the riverare compared withother delta areas in netherlands is remarkable. Also popular trees, brickfactories, fruityardsand shipswharfs are dominating local scenery. ZUIDASAMSTERDAM NLZuidas is the top location of the Netherlands: 5 mins to Schiphol Airport and 5 mins to theAmsterdam canals, the historic city heart. The development of Zuidas will create a state of theart metropolitan downtown, up to European standards, within Amsterdam. The area has perfectaccess for cars, public transportation. It will become more European with the realisation of ahighspeed trainstation.End 1999 a breakthrough is archieved in the design by the supervisor team around city architectPi de Bruijn. A neutral gridstructure is projected parallel to the infrastructure. Using aclear volumetrical concept, a combination of blocks and towers would enable a continuoushigh density mixture, consisting of 45% housing 45% offices and 10 % services.in the last fifteen years the grid has been filling up according to the guidelines as defined in1999. many top 100 companies moved their headquarters to ZuidAs. Completion of the projectwill take up to 2030 to fill all plots.Client:Design:Program:Visuals:Status:Project Office zuidasPi de Bruijn, Joost van den Hoek, DRO Amsterdam2.5 milion sq. meter of mixed use urban developmentCIIIDImplemented34ZUIDAS AMSTERDAMPROJECTS 1998-2013SOUTHAXIS : A NEW METROPOLITAN DOWNTOWN IN 202035

ROOMBEEKENSCHEDE NLThe 13th of May, 2000 is an important day in Dutch history. The explosion of a fireworks companyin Enschede took the lives of 20 peoples lifes and created a giant hole in the urban fabric. In November 2000 Pi de Bruijn was appointed supervising masterplanner for the disaster areaa 63 hectare parcel is close to the citycenter of Enschede. The goalof the assignment was notonly to reaccomodate the victims, but to create a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood. The plannersare confronted with high political pressure and a with lot of media attention.Essential to the project was a ìbottomupî approach rather than the standard ìtopdownî solution.A ìbottomupî approach takes in to account all the single needs of the victims and hasdimensions of both physical and psychological healing. The character of Enschedeís urbanitybecame a guideline: deep blocks, mixed programming and small sizes in buildingscale. Smallarchitectural projects became the foundation of the rebuilding process. Privately commisionedmansions are the main dish in building production. This very undutch way of working stimulatescitizens to take part in the process of building. This Taylor made approach is predicted tohave an important role in the future of Dutch planning and design.Client:Design:Program:Status:40Project office Rebuilding RoombeekPi de Bruijn, Joost van den Hoek, Andre Langenberg, Jarik Ouburg, Pierre de Angelis1600 dwellings, 1.5 million sq. ft. business, amenities, shops and cultural facilitiesImplementedROOMBEEK ENSCHEDEROOMBEEK ENSCHEDE 14 MAY 2000PROJECTS 1998-2013 41

BUSINESSCENTER WTCALMERE NLAlmere is a boomtown. It is the fastest growing city in the Netherlands and is approaching200.000 inhabitants. Twentyfinve years ago the city didnít even exist. The transformation ofthe city from a sleepy suburbia to a modern metropolis neigboring Amsterdam is takin place, including the constructions of a new city center designed by Rem Koolhaas. The new WorldTrade Center will provide Almere with a Skyline. The ambition is to make a Rockefellercenter inthe polder. The site is strategically connected to the train station and easily accessible by car.The program includes approximately one million sq. feet of office space including some retailand services located at ground level. A parking garage of 1100 places is also required. The goal of the design is flexiblity and feasiblity, and will be approached in three fases. Thethree units are defined by parallel slabs. This compository approach results in an interestingarchitectural differentiation and good office typology at the same time, providing Almerewith an instant skyline. The massive impact of the WTC on Almere can't be underestimated. Not only will it accommodate 5000 workers, but at a height of 400 feet, it will be visible fromAmsterdam.Client:Design:Program:Status:46Municipality of AlmerePi de Bruijn, Joost van den Hoek, Gabu Heindl, Sven Kloeker, Dominique Cozijnsenone million sq. ft. office spaceImplementedWTC ALMEREA NEW SKYLINE FOR BOOMTOWN ALMEREPROJECTS 1998-2013 47

LONNEKERSPOORLAANENSCHEDE NLOne of the important guidelines in the Roombeek plan to rebuilt Enschede after the fireworksdisaster is an old train track, called Lonnekerspoorlaan. This diagonal line in the plan introducesa series of three parks that provide a relaxed green quality to the area. Facing the parka continuous line of mansions is proposed. The basic condition is that the houses need to beprivately commisioned and individualy designed by architects. The width of the houses will be inbetween 15 - 30 ft. and the height 3-4 floors. The Materialshould be brick, window frames should be white and fences should be black to ensure anattractive urban coherence. One of the essential aspects of the plan is the balcony towards thepark. Piano nobile is elevated to a level of one meter, introducing a basement which is idealfor parking. Considering the west orientation, the terrace in front of the house is not only anice place to sit, it also gives a social dimension to the park.Client: Municipality of EnschedeDesign: Pi de Bruijn, Joost van den Hoek, Hans Laumanns, Hans van de WijgertProgramm: 90 mansions to be privately commisionedVisuals: CIIIDStatus: Implemented52LONNEKERSPOORLAAN ENSCHEDEA PARK BOULEVARD WITH PRIVATELY COMMISIONED RESIDENCESPROJECTS 1998-2013 53

MUSEUMLAANENSCHEDE NLThe redevelopment of Enschede Roombeek has introduced a new cultural power. Next to thesite is the reknowned museum for modern art in Enschede. Within the developent plan a newmuseum is defined. A strong line is needed to connect the cultural institutions with each other. This line is the museum axis, or the ìMuseumlaanî. In order to provide a continuous culturalcharacter the Museumlaan is lined with villas desiged by architects of international stature, thus creating an open air museum for architecture. The zoning of the villas is fixed in order to ensure urban coherence, in particular, the creationof an appropriate space relating the private and public realms. The public space is also speciallydesigned. The first proposals have been released. Designs by Benthem en Crouwel, Erickvan Egeraat, Shin Takamatsu, Puljiz& Medic, Cino Zucci and Bolles& Wilson will be realized inthe next year. GROLSCH BROUWERIJENSCHEDE NLThe redevelopment of the Grolsch factory is the largest entity within the masterplanning ofRoombeek Enschede. While maintaining few old buildings the setup provides a new landmarkquality for Enschede. The project is a city in itselve, the mixed programming contains allaspects of urban Life. Keyelements are a shopping center, an arts school, academic researchfacilities, offices and a mixed variety of housingtypes.Backbone of the design is an attractive green diagonal that connects slow traffic routes in thedirection of the city center, ending in an urban square on the Roomweg. Here is the emphasison programmatical congestion in order to create an urban liveliness. On the inside of the blocka calm architectural coherence is foreseen. MIXED USE INDEXDELFT UNIVERSITYThe master thesis "Holland in Transit" is a research project concerning the densification ofleftover space around large scale infrastructures within an urban context. The research isnot primarily motivated by aesthetics nor a fascination for infrastructure, but tries to formulatea serious strategy for urban growth within the contours of urban settlement. The casus isthe problematical construction of the A4 motorway between Vlaardingen and Schiedam nearRotterdam. The integration of road construction and urban development provides not only asolution for an environmental discussion thats been going on for 30 years. but also delivers afinancial solution. Developing the land pays for expensive infra-solutions.The basic concept is stacking of slow traffic on fast traffic and thus making noise and pollutioncontrollable. The height of the construction is bridged by a new landscape relief. In parallel, strips parks and buildings are arganised around the motorway. A neutral structure providesmaximum flexibility. The intevention melts surrounding neighbourhoods together.Design:Tutors:Status:Joost van den Hoekprof C. Weeber, prof. HOLLAND IN TRANSITDELFT UNIVERSITYThe master thesis "Holland in Transit" is a research project concerning the densification ofleftover space around large scale infrastructures within an urban context.
