After working for a short time inEurope, <strong>Louise</strong> eventually settled in New York.<strong>Louise</strong> Berliawsky was born in Kiev, Russia in 1900.When she was 5 her family moved to Maine, andwhen she was 6 she started to become interested inthe scraps from her father’s lumberyard. Her fatherbelieved in equal rights for women and supportedher artistic interests.For years <strong>Louise</strong> <strong>Nevelson</strong> was very poor and didnot get very much recognition for her artwork.But, by the end of the 1950’s, she had developedher signature style and was beginning to becomeknown as an important American sculptor.<strong>Nevelson</strong>’s assemblage-style artwork is nowrecognized all over the world!Mirror Shadow XXIX wascreated in 1986.Cubism, African sculpture, Matisse, and Picassoinfluenced <strong>Nevelson</strong>’s sculptural style. <strong>Nevelson</strong>gathered wood scraps and assembled them as abstractforms in wood boxes. While arranging shapes, she triedto create a sense of balance in the overall work. To helpachieve unity, she painted the boxes a solid color,usually black or white, and stacked them asfreestanding walls for display.
