Butfor doctors at LVPEI, it was just another day atwork.Rajiv Thareja had congenital glaucoma. He wasoperated upon when he was 11 days old andgained 10 to 15% of his sight. When he was 8,he underwent his first corneal transplant and, thereafter, enjoyed pretty goodvision for a few years until he again lost vision in both the eyes. All through hishigh school and college he was virtually blind. With the support of his doting parents, he completed his graduation in music, taking the help of a writer for writing his exams. Determined to be independent,he began teaching music to children and also became involved in his father’sbusiness – an optical outlet chain spread over several cities in northern India. He also successfully pursued his childhood dream of starting a hotel business, not letting his sub-optimal vision stop him. Today he owns a 30-room hotelin Gwalior, Uttar Pradesh. In 2005, he got married and had a child. But themarriage did not last long.Rajiv had undergone several corneal transplantations, including one in 1980at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and another one in 1989 at aprivate hospital in New Delhi. However, each time the corneal transplant wasrejected by his body.In February 2011 Rajiv underwent a corneal transplant at LVPEI, Hyderabad. Healso had a complex combination surgery — for cataract surgery and glaucomato control his intraocular pressure. Since then, he has enjoyed reasonably goodvision. On a recent follow-up visit, he said, “I was blind, but now I can see. I caneven drive a motorcycle now. Dr Muralidhar and Dr Anil Mandal have given methe vision that no other doctor could succeed in doing.”Rajiv recalls Dr Muralidhar’s words to him when he first arrived here, “Do youwant vision? Let me tell you that you have a good chance of seeing again.”Rajiv showed us a recent newspaper article profiling him, where he has spokenof the shortage of corneas available for transplantation, which prevents manyothers like him from seeing again. He says he will continue to spread themessage of eye donation, which has enabled him to see again. With his glaucoma under control and a good corneal graft in his left eye, Rajivis now on the look-out for a new life partner!Patient FeedbackMr & Mrs Jaishil Rao withDr Manav KheraGMR Varalakshmi Campus, VisakhapatnamTel: 91 0891 39892020Fax: 91 0891 3984444E-mail: info.vizag@lvpei.orgWords fail me in adequately expressingmy opinion on the premier institute, viz,L V Prasad Eye Institute, GMR VaralakshmiCampus, Visakhapatnam.
