However, analysis of the <strong>2001</strong>-<strong>2002</strong> Z<strong>DHS</strong> data indicatesthat many women confused it with simple breastfeeding so, rather than present misleading data, it was decided to classify LAM as a traditionalmethod.2Women who had sexual intercourse in the one month preceding the surveyAlmost 60 percent of all women report having used a method of contraception at some time, 42percent used a modern method, <strong>and</strong> 34 percent used a traditional method. Of the modern methods, the pill(28 percent) is the most common method followed by the male condom (21 percent). Implant <strong>and</strong> IUD arethe least used methods with less than 1 percent reporting to have used either method. Of the traditionalmethods, withdrawal is the method most commonly used (23 percent) while rhythm/natural familyplanning the least commonly used by women (7 percent).72 │ Fertility Regulation
