One of these factors is smoking tobacco. Information was collectedin the 2001-2002 ZDHS on tobacco use 3 for women and men.3.8.1 Use of TobaccoThe use of tobacco in the household adversely affects the health status of all household members, including individuals who are not smoking. In the 2001-2002 ZDHS respondents were asked if theysmoked regularly and how much they smoked in the last 24 hours.Tables 3.17.1 and 3.17.2 show the percent distribution of women and men by whether they currentlysmoke various types of tobacco, by current age and mean number of cigarettes smoked in a day.The data indicate that there are more women (97 percent) than men (74 percent) who do not smoke. Forthose currently smoking, cigarettes are the most preferred by men (14 percent) whilst ‘other tobacco’ isthe most preferred for women (2 percent). Table 3.17.1 shows that among women, use of tobacco reachesonly 11 percent in age group 40-49 from less than 1 percent in age group 15-19.Table 3.17.2 shows that the proportion of smokers is low (2 percent) among teenage men but increasesrapidly to 37 percent in age group 30-39 after which it varies little with increasing age. Malesmokers smoke an average of 4.6 cigarettes in a day.3See Chapter 13 for results on alcohol use.52 │ Characteristics of Respondents
