variation in sex composition of the population by urban-rural residence from what is observed at the nationallevel. The age distribution of the Zambian population is typical of high fertility/high mortality populationswhich show a higher proportion of younger persons in the overall population (see Figure 2.1). The populationunder age 15 constitutes 48 percent of the total population, while the older age groups are very small. Thistype of age structure has a built-in momentum for the growth of the country’s population. The implication isthat the population growth rate will remain high for some time because the young population will eventuallyreach the reproductive age.A feature worth noting in the population distribution is the gap between males and females at age20-24 in the ZDHS sample (Figure 2.2). The gap indicates that there are more women than men in this agegroup.Figure 2.1 Population PyramidAge80+75-7970-7465-6960-6455-5950-5445-4940-4435-3930-3425-2920-2415-1910-145-90-4MaleFemale20 18 16 14 12 10 8 6 4 20 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20PercentZDHS 2001-200212 | Characteristics of Households and Respondents
