CHARACTERISTICS OF HOUSEHOLDS AND2RESPONDENTSPatrick Mumba CheweThe purpose of this chapter is to provide a descriptive summary of some demographic and socioeconomiccharacteristics of the population in the sampled households. Also examined are environmentalconditions, such as housing facilities and household characteristics. This information on the characteristics ofthe households and the individual women and men interviewed is essential for the interpretation of surveyfindings.In the 2001-2002 ZDHS a household was defined as a person or a group of persons, related orunrelated, who live together in the same dwelling unit and share a common source of food. The HouseholdQuestionnaire was used to collect information on all usual residents and visitors who spent the nightpreceding the survey in the household. This method of data collection allows the analysis of either de jure(usual residents) or de facto (those who are there at the time of the survey) populations.2.1 POPULATION BY AGE AND SEXAge and sex are important demographic variables and are the primary basis of demographicclassification in vital statistics, censuses, and surveys. They are also very important variables in the study ofmortality, fertility, and nuptiality. The distribution of the de facto household population in the 2001-2002ZDHS survey is shown in Table 2.1 by five-year age groups, according to sex and urban-rural residence whileFigure 2.1 shows the population pyramid by sex for Zambia. The data show that there are slightly morewomen than men in Zambia, with women constituting 51 percent and men constituting 49 percent.
