14.1.3 Approach to Weighting Syphilis and HIV Data for Non-ResponseIn the 2001-2002 ZDHS, special weights were calculated for use in the analysis of the HIV andsyphilis test results. These sampling weights take into account differences in the coverage of the testingby province and sex. The fact that only sex, age, and residence information is available for the HIV datapreclude other adjustments. Moreover, the results in Table 14.5, which presents the weighted percentagestested for HIV among women and men interviewed in the ZDHS by background characteristics, show noevidence of systematic biases in response rates in directions related to known patterns of HIV infection.Table 14.5 Percentage of respondents tested for HIVPercentage of men and women interviewed in the ZDHS who were tested for HIV, by background characteristics(weighted), Zambia 2001-2002Women Men TotalNumberNumberof Percentage of Percentagewomen tested men testedNumberofrespondentsBackgroundcharacteristicPercentagetestedAge group15-19 81.1 629 75.2 459 78.6 1,08820-24 80.3 570 83.4 346 81.4 91625-29 80.9 455 79.0 361 80.1 81530-34 81.5 334 80.5 281 81.0 61535-39 84.5 250 87.3 241 85.9 49140-44 81.3 202 80.6 174 81.0 37545-49 78.8 164 76.9 113 78.0 27850-54 na na 86.8 100 86.8 10055-59 na na 74.2 71 74.2 71Marital statusNever married, never had sex 74.8 309 72.9 202 74.1 511Never married, ever had sex 83.1 336 79.3 579 80.7 915Married/living together 81.4 1,592 81.5 1,087 81.5 2,680Divorced/separated/widowed 83.3 366 84.4 105 83.5 471PartnersMarried, no sex 72.8 71 * 11 72.8 82Married, spouse only 81.7 1,484 81.3 851 81.5 2,335Married, 1 other partner * 8 * 17 89.4 26Married, 2+ other partners 88.1 29 82.0 207 82.8 236Not married, no sex 76.0 611 75.6 387 75.9 997Not married, 1 partner 86.9 368 82.6 340 84.8 708Not married, 2+ partners 96.8 32 76.3 161 79.7 192EducationNo education 77.6 299 75.7 97 77.1 396Primary 81.8 1,522 81.8 1,002 81.8 2,524Secondary+ 81.0 782 78.8 875 79.8 1,657HIV test statusTested for HIV 74.6 233 74.0 263 74.3 496Not tested, want test 87.5 1,797 88.1 1,276 87.7 3,073Not tested, don’t want test 61.9 473 58.1 379 60.2 853Don’t know 73.0 100 76.9 56 74.4 156Total 81.1 2,603 80.1 1,974 80.7 4,578Note: An asterisk indicates that a figure is based on fewer than 25 unweighted cases and has been suppressed.na = Not applicablePrevalence of HIV and Syphilis | 229
