Married men, however, are more likely than married women to have multiple partners. Overall, 19 percentof married men have had one or more partners other than their spouse or cohabiting partner in theprevious year. The practice of having extramarital partners is more common among younger married men(age 20-29), men living in urban areas, and men in Lusaka, Southern, and Western provinces.The same questions were asked of respondents who are not currently married. Table 13.19shows that 69 percent of unmarried women did not have any sexual partner in the 12 months precedingthe survey, 29 percent had only one sexual partner, and 3 percent had two or more partners. Unmarriedmen are less likely than women to have had no partner (45 percent compared with 69 percent, respectively)and are much more likely to report having had multiple partners (17 percent compared with 3 percent).Table 13.19 Number of sexual partners: unmarried women and menPercent distribution of unmarried women and men by number of persons they had sexual intercourse with in the past 12 months andmean number of sexual partners, according to background characteristics, Zambia 2001-2002––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––WomenMen–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––MeanMeanDon't Number number Don't Number numberBackground know/ of of sexual know/ of of sexualcharacteristic 0 1 2+ missing Total women partners 0 1 2+ missing Total men partners––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Age15-19 71.5 25.6 2.9 0.1 100.0 1,374 0.3 56.0 32.1 11.9 0.0 100.0 452 0.620-24 59.8 38.2 2.1 0.0 100.0 578 0.4 31.5 44.2 24.4 0.0 100.0 255 1.225-29 62.2 34.6 3.2 0.0 100.0 320 0.4 25.7 48.1 24.8 1.5 100.0 89 1.730-39 68.2 29.7 2.0 0.0 100.0 391 0.3 40.5 41.9 17.6 0.0 100.0 68 0.940-49 80.9 17.0 2.2 0.0 100.0 301 0.2 61.9 23.9 14.1 0.0 100.0 23 0.550-59 na na na na na na na 55.3 44.7 0.0 0.0 100.0 10 0.4Marital statusNever married 66.4 30.7 2.8 0.1 100.0 1,897 0.4 46.2 37.3 16.3 0.2 100.0 782 0.9Divorced, separated,widowed 72.8 25.0 2.2 0.0 100.0 1,067 0.3 36.4 41.2 22.5 0.0 100.0 116 1.3ResidenceUrban 71.8 25.6 2.6 0.0 100.0 1,411 0.3 41.9 39.4 18.4 0.3 100.0 408 1.0Rural 65.9 31.5 2.5 0.1 100.0 1,553 0.4 47.6 36.5 16.0 0.0 100.0 489 0.8ProvinceCentral 73.2 26.2 0.6 0.0 100.0 217 0.3 54.0 34.5 11.5 0.0 100.0 83 0.7Copperbelt 75.6 21.5 2.9 0.0 100.0 672 0.3 44.4 38.1 17.5 0.0 100.0 212 0.9Eastern 75.1 24.2 0.7 0.0 100.0 283 0.3 46.3 33.8 20.0 0.0 100.0 84 0.9Luapula 81.3 17.4 1.3 0.0 100.0 222 0.2 51.7 32.8 15.5 0.0 100.0 53 1.2Lusaka 66.8 29.3 3.9 0.0 100.0 491 0.4 40.2 37.4 21.5 0.9 100.0 140 1.2Northern 83.1 14.5 2.5 0.0 100.0 362 0.2 57.5 33.1 9.4 0.0 100.0 113 0.5North-Western 51.4 46.5 2.0 0.0 100.0 139 0.5 41.3 41.3 17.3 0.0 100.0 41 0.8Southern 53.9 44.1 1.6 0.4 100.0 282 0.5 42.3 47.4 10.3 0.0 100.0 88 0.7Western 42.1 52.8 5.2 0.0 100.0 295 0.6 27.3 42.9 29.9 0.0 100.0 83 1.2EducationNo education 70.8 26.6 2.6 0.0 100.0 262 0.3 43.7 45.3 11.0 0.0 100.0 35 0.7Primary 67.9 28.9 3.2 0.0 100.0 1,534 0.4 45.0 37.7 17.4 0.0 100.0 458 0.9Secondary 69.6 28.4 1.9 0.1 100.0 1,055 0.3 43.6 38.4 17.9 0.0 100.0 377 1.0Higher 66.5 32.2 1.3 0.0 100.0 114 0.3 65.7 21.7 7.7 4.9 100.0 27 0.5Total 68.7 28.7 2.6 0.0 100.0 2,964 0.3 45.0 37.8 17.1 0.1 100.0 897 0.9––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––na = Not applicable220 | AIDS/HIV/STI-Related Knowledge and Behaviour
