used condoms, 34 percent took medicine. About one in three women (29 percent) and men (32 percent)took no action to protect their partner.13.11 SEXUAL BEHAVIOURThe sexual behaviour of an individual greatly affects the chances of getting infected with an STI.In this section, two aspects of sexual behaviour are studied: number of sexual partners and use of condomsfor STI prevention.13.11.1 Number of Sexual PartnersInformation on sexual behaviour is important in designing and monitoring intervention programmesto control the spread of STIs. The 2001-2002 ZDHS included questions on the respondents’ lastthree sexual partners in the 12 months preceding the survey. Two types of partners are recognised: thosewho are cohabiting with the respondent (mostly spouses) and those who are not cohabiting with the respondentat the time of the last sexual encounter. Information on use of condoms at last sexual encounterwith each of these partner types was also collected.Table 13.18 shows that 98 percent of married women and 81 percent of men say they had nosexual partner other than their spouse or cohabiting partner in the 12 months preceding the survey. Twopercent of married women say they only had one partner other than their spouse or cohabiting partner, andalmost none had two or more partners. Differences among women by background characteristics are negligible.Table 13.18 Number of extramarital sexual partners: married women and menPercent distribution of currently married women and men by number of persons (excluding spouses or cohabiting partners)they had sexual intercourse with in the 12 months preceding the survey, according to background characteristics, Zambia2001-2002–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––WomenMen–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Number Don't NumberBackground of know/ ofcharacteristic 0 1 2+ Total women 0 1 2+ missing Total men–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Age15-19 97.2 2.8 0.0 100.0 438 86.9 13.1 0.0 0.0 100.0 720-24 97.8 2.1 0.1 100.0 1,086 68.0 23.8 8.2 0.0 100.0 9125-29 98.4 1.5 0.2 100.0 1,056 77.3 18.1 4.2 0.3 100.0 27230-39 98.7 1.2 0.1 100.0 1,347 79.5 16.8 3.5 0.2 100.0 45540-49 98.4 1.5 0.1 100.0 767 83.6 11.7 4.7 0.0 100.0 26450-59 na na na na na 92.0 6.5 1.5 0.0 100.0 160ResidenceUrban 97.7 2.0 0.2 100.0 1,662 76.9 16.5 6.5 0.0 100.0 443Rural 98.5 1.5 0.0 100.0 3,032 82.8 14.4 2.6 0.2 100.0 805ProvinceCentral 99.3 0.7 0.0 100.0 346 83.2 14.6 2.2 0.0 100.0 82Copperbelt 98.1 1.7 0.2 100.0 871 85.0 13.6 1.4 0.0 100.0 235Eastern 99.4 0.6 0.0 100.0 644 81.8 15.3 2.8 0.0 100.0 184Luapula 99.3 0.5 0.2 100.0 399 91.1 6.5 2.4 0.0 100.0 113Lusaka 97.6 2.4 0.0 100.0 640 72.7 15.9 11.4 0.0 100.0 173Northern 98.8 1.0 0.0 100.0 678 92.0 7.0 0.0 1.0 100.0 178North-Western 99.1 0.7 0.2 100.0 215 78.4 18.7 3.0 0.0 100.0 52Southern 96.8 3.0 0.2 100.0 532 70.1 24.4 5.5 0.0 100.0 144Western 95.9 3.9 0.3 100.0 369 62.5 28.7 8.7 0.0 100.0 86EducationNo education 99.1 0.9 0.0 100.0 663 80.5 15.8 3.7 0.0 100.0 73Primary 98.0 1.9 0.1 100.0 2,905 81.9 15.0 3.1 0.0 100.0 642Secondary 98.1 1.6 0.3 100.0 1,006 77.7 16.4 5.4 0.4 100.0 431Higher 100.0 0.0 0.0 100.0 120 86.0 10.1 3.9 0.0 100.0 102Total 98.2 1.7 0.1 100.0 4,694 80.7 15.2 4.0 0.1 100.0 1,248–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––na = Not applicableAIDS/HIV/STI-Related Knowledge and Behaviour | 219
