Overall, 70 percent of children 12-23 months are fully vaccinated and only 3 percent of childrenhave not received any vaccines. Looking at coverage for specific vaccines, only 14 percent of childrenhave received polio at birth, 94 percent the first DPT dose, and 96 percent the first polio dose. Coveragedeclines for subsequent doses of DPT and polio, with only 80 percent of children receiving therecommended three doses of these vaccines. These figures reflect dropout rates of 15 and 16 percent forDPT and polio, respectively; the dropout rate represents the proportion of children who receive the firstdose of a vaccine but do not go on to get the third dose. The proportion of children vaccinated againstmeasles is 84 percent.Table 9.13 presents vaccination coverage among children age 12-23 months by backgroundcharacteristics. There are minor variations in coverage by sex and birth order. Urban children have77 percent coverage for all vaccinations, compared with 67 percent among rural children. Copperbelt,Lusaka, and Southern provinces record the highest coverage (79, 78 and 77 percent, respectively) for allvaccinations.The proportion of children fully immunised increases with mother’s level of education, from58 percent among children whose mothers have no education to 71 percent among those whose mothershave some primary education and 76 percent among those whose mothers have at least some secondaryeducation.144 | Maternal and Child Health
