Familyplanning providers should inform all methodusers of potential side effects and what theyshould do if they encounter signs of a problem. This information assists users in coping with sideeffects and decreases unnecessary discontinuationof temporary methods.Table 5.11 shows that health providersare somewhat more likely to inform users ofmodern methods about side effects or problems ofmethod used than about what to do if theyexperienced side effects. Three-fourths of womenwere informed about the side effects of themethod, while 69percent were informed aboutwhat to do if they experienced side effects. Differencesbetween pill users and injectables usersare small, with injectables users being only slightlymore likely to be informed about side effects.Table 5.11 Informed choiceAmong current users of specific modern contraceptivemethods who adopted the method in the five yearspreceding the survey, percentage of women who wereinformed about the side effects of the current method used, and percentage who were informed what to do if sideeffects were experienced, by background characteristics,Zambia 2001-2002––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Informed Informedabout side effects what to do Numberor problems of if side effect ofMethod method used experienced users––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Pill 73.8 68.5 587Injectables 79.1 71.0 225Total 1 74.9 69.1 883––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––1Total includes users of female sterilisation, pill, IUD,injectables and implantsFertility Regulation │ 81
