MSC 85/26/Add.2ANNEX 3Page 303PRECAUTIONSProtect machinery, accommodations and equipment from small particles or any dust if formed.Persons involved in cargo handling shall wear protective clothing, goggles and dust filter masks.Holds including trimming plates and tanktop s shall be treated with effective, commerciallyavailable protective coating or lime-washed to avoid any potential corrosive reaction betweensulphur, water and steel. Upper sections shall have a sound coating of paint. Hatches shall besealed tightly.VENTILATIONSurface ventilation only, either natural or mechanical, shall be conducted, as necessary, duringthe voyage for this cargo.CARRIAGEAs a fine spray of fresh water or surfactant is added during loading, bilges shall be sounded andpumped out as necessary throughout the voyage.DISCHARGEAppropriate safety precautions shall be taken when entering the cargo spaces, particularly in thearea of the bottom layers of sulphur in ships hold, taking into account the recommendationsdeveloped by the Organization. †Appropriate precautions shall be taken to minimize impact, abrasion and crushing when handlingto prevent dust from forming.CLEAN-UPPersons involved in clean-up shall wear hard hats, protective goggles, long-sleeve shirts, longpants, and impervious gloves.
