<strong>MSC</strong> <strong>85</strong>/<strong>26</strong>/<strong>Add.2</strong><strong>ANNEX</strong> 3Page 291PRECAUTIONSThe manufacturer or the shipper shall provide the master with a certificate stating that, aftermanufacture, the cargo was stored under cover, but exposed to open air for not less than threedays prior to shipment. Smoking shall not be allowed on deck and in the cargo spaces and“NO SMOKING” signs shall be displayed on deck whenever this cargo is on board. Electricalfittings and cables shall be in good condition and properly safeguarded against short circuits andsparking. Where a bulkhead is required to be suitable for segregation purposes, cable andconduit penetrations of the decks and bulkheads shall be sealed against the passage of gas andvapour. Whenever practicable, ventilation systems for the living quarters shall be shut down orscreened and air condition systems shall be placed on recirculation during loading and dischargeof this cargo, in order to minimize the entry of dust into living quarters or other interior spaces ofthe ship. Precautions shall be taken to minimize the extent to which dust of this cargo may comein contact with moving parts of deck machinery and external navigation aids such as navigationlights.Entry of personnel into enclosed spaces should not be permitted until tests have been carried outand it has been established that the oxygen content has been restored to a normal level throughoutthe space and that no toxic gas is present, unless adequate ventilation and air circulationthroughout the free space above the material has been effected.Prohibition of smoking in dangerous areas should be enforced, and clearly legible“NO SMOKING” signs should be displayed.Electrical fittings and cables should be in good condition and properly safeguarded againstshort circuits and sparking. Where a bulkhead is required to be suitable for segregation purposes,cable and conduit penetrations of the decks and bulkheads should be sealed against the passageof gas and vapour.Whenever possible, ventilation systems should be shut down or screened and air conditionsystems, if any, placed on recirculation during loading or discharge, in order to minimize theentry of dust into living quarters or other interior spaces of the ship.Precautions should be taken to minimize the extent to which dust may come in contact withmoving parts of deck machinery and external navigation aids (e.g., navigation lights).VENTILATIONMechanical surface ventilation shall be conducted during the voyage, as necessary, for the cargospaces carrying this cargo.CARRIAGEFor quantitative measurements of oxygen and flammable gases liable to be evolved by the cargo,a suitable detector for each gas or combination of gases shall be on board while this cargo iscarried. The detector shall be suitable for use in an atmosphere without oxygen and of certifiedsafe type for use in explosive atmosphere.
