Let There Be Greener Light!by Andre Smalling, CETIn this paper I will focus on LED and the cleaner, most efficient lighting sources as the world seeksgreener lighting. LEDs today are the most efficientlight bulb you can buy. It'll last you 10 times as longas a CFL, while creating less heat during five minutesof use, and an LED light bulb will be cool to the touchand there are no hazardous material in LED to worryabout.LEDs will soon completely replace incandescent, fluorescent and even compact fluorescent lamps asthe world primary source of lighting. Many countriesare moving away from the incandescent and florescentand adopting more greener light sources. Russia forexample, decided to ban the incandescent bulb. Butthey’ve taken it one step further—according to aReuter’s article, the ban will cover both the manufactureand sale of the Edison light bulb.As of January 1, 2014, the manufacture and sale of allincandescent bulbs will be prohibited in Russia. Theprocess initiates on January 1, 2011, when Edisonbulbs over 100 W will get the ax. Two years later, allbulbs over 75 W will disappear, and by 2014, theprocess will be complete. According to senior Kremlineconomic aide Arkady Dvorkovich, CFL bulbs possessthree to four times the energy savings of a traditionalbulb, however the mercury they contain is lessattractive for a greener world going forward. CFL arenow nevertheless cheaper than LEDs and will not breakthe budget, however that will soon change. How LED's WorkLEDs differ greatly from traditional light sources inthe way they produce light. In incandescent bulbs6 | The High-Tech News | MAR/APR2010for example, a tungsten filament is heated by electriccurrent until it glows or emits light. In a fluorescentlamp, white light is produced indirectly by mercury,in which an electric arc excites mercury atoms, whichemit ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The UV radiation thenstrikes the phosphor coating on the inside of glasstubes, the UV radiation is thus converted into visiblelight by the phosphor coating. However an LED is a semiconductor diode much likethe diode we learn about in basic semiconductor theory. It consists of a silicon chip material treated to create astructure called a p-n (positive-negative) junction. Whenconnected to a power source, current flows from thep-side or anode to the n-side, or cathode, but not in thereverse direction. Charge-carriers (electrons and electronholes) flow into the junction from electrodes. Whenelectrons come in contact with a hole, it falls into a lowerenergy How level, LED and releases Work energy in the form of a photon(light). The specific wavelength or color emitted by theLED depends on the materials used to make the diode.Fig.6Red LEDs are based on aluminum gallium arsenide(AlGaAs). Blue LEDs are made from indium galliumnitride (InGaN) and green from aluminum galliumphosphide (AlGaP). "White" light is created bycombining the light from red, green, and blue (RGB)LEDs differ greatly from traditional light sourlight. In incandescent bulbs for example, a tunelectric current until it glows or emits light. Inlight is produce indirectly by mercury, in whicmercury atoms, which emit ultraviolet (UV) raLEDs or by coating a blue LED with yellow phosphor.

Fig.1Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) differ from other lightsources, such as incandescent and fluorescent lamps,in the way they generate white light. However, you mayhave already learned that what appears to our eyes as"white" is actually a mix of different wavelengths inthe visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. The diagram below illustrates visible light as onesmall portion of the overall electromagnetic spectrum.Electromagnetic radiation in wavelengths from about380 to 770 nanometers is visible to the human eye.Shown below in Figure. 1source that shows the relative radiant power emittedby the light source at each wavelength. Incandescent sources have a continuous

light. For example, a red filter on an incandescentlamp can block 90 percent of the visible light fromthe lamp. Red LEDs provide the same amount of lightfor about one-tenth the power (12 watts comparedto 120+ watts) and last longer. However, for LEDs tobe used as a general light source we need it also toemit white light. LEDs are not inherently white lightsources. Nevertheless the adoption of LEDs for generallighting may be just around the corner. LEDs offer manyadvantages in general illumination systems, includinglonger lifetimes and greater efficiency, despite thedesign challenges they present. One challenge has to do with the generation of highqualitywhite light. As mentioned earlier, a white LEDis constructed using a blue LED and a phosphor toshift the light output to other parts of the spectrum. Many white LEDs cannot yield a high color-renderingindex (CRI), which is a measure of the ability of thelight source to faithfully reproduce all colors. TheCRI is a quantitative measurable index. It generallyranges from zero for a source like a low-pressuresodium vapor lamp which is monochromatic, to onehundred, for a source like an incandescent light bulb, which emits essentially blackbody radiation. Figure4 shows the spectral distribution of a blackbodyradiator. It is related to color temperature, in that theCRI measures for a pair of light sources can only becompared if they have the same color temperature.Shown in figure 5.Correlated color temperature (CCT) describes therelative color appearance of a white light source, indicating whether it appears more yellow/gold or moreblue, in terms of the range of available shades of white.Low color temperature implies warmer (more yellow/red) light while high color temperature implies a colder(more blue) light.CCT is given in Kelvin (SI unit of absolute temperature)and refers to the appearance of a theoretical blackbodyheated to high temperatures. As the blackbody getshotter, it turns red, orange, yellow, white, and finallyblue. The CCT of a light source is the temperature (inK) at which the heated blackbody matches the color ofthe light source in question.8 | The High-Tech News | MAR/APR2010Fig 5Fig Fig 5.Lumen DepreciationCorrelated color temperature (CCT) describes the relative color appearanceof a white light source, indicating whether it appears more yellow/gold orCorrelated color temperature (CCT) describes the relativeof a white light source, indicating whether it appears moremore blue, in terms of the range of available shades of whtemperature implies warmer (more yellow/red) light whiletemperature implies a colder (more blue) light.Every more blue, known in terms electric of the range light of available source shades experiences of white. This typically results in 10% to 15%depreciation compared to initial lumen output over the1,000 hour life of an incandescent lamp.In fluorescent lamps, the primary causes for lumendepreciation are the photochemical degradation ofthe phosphor coating and the glass tube, and theaccumulation of light-absorbing deposits within thelamp over time. Specific lamp lumen depreciationcurves are provided by the lamp manufacturers.Study shows that the best quality fluorescent lampsusing rare earth phosphors may only lose 5% to10% of initial lumens at 20,000 hours of operation.Standard compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), onthe other hand, may experience higher lumendepreciation compared to linear sources. Howeveras the technology improves higher quality modelsgenerally lose no more than 20% of initial lumensover their 10,000 hour life.CCT is given in Kelvin (SI unit of absolute temperature) aappearance of a theoretical black body heated to high temblack body gets hotter, it turns red, orange, yellow, white,The CCT of a light source is the temperature (in K) at whblack body matches the color of the light source in questioOne promising material used to develop High IntensityLEDs is Gallium nitride (GaN). This solid-state light

emitter covers the UV, blue, and green parts of thespectrum. GaN is one of the most promising materialsfor applications in high frequency and power electronicsas well as opto-electronics in the blue to ultravioletrange of the spectrum:• High thermal conductivity.• Wide bandgap energy.• High breakdown field and electron mobility. These general properties lend themselves toexploitation in nearly any electronic device withspecial applications in high power electronics, highfrequency applications, and use in hostile conditions(such as high temperature probes). Commercial GaNbased LEDs and Lasers are currently available, butmore devices will become available in the future.Another good technology is the Indium GalliumNitrate (InGaN) material technology. The InGaNmaterial has a very high luminous efficiency, capableof producing high light output over a wide range ofdrive currents.Once again, with the help of phosphors, white light canalso be produced. Gallium nitride devices are findingtheir way into mass-markets, but the technology isyet in its infancy and there is considerable scope forperformance improvements.A specific problem with gallium nitride materials isthe high defect density in them. The primary causeof LED lumen depreciation is heat generated at theLED junction. As mention earlier LEDs do not emitheat as infrared radiation (IR), so the heat must beremoved from the device by conduction or convection. That is the reason the LED light Engine must sit on theheatsink. Without adequate heat sinking or ventilation, the device temperature will rise, resulting in lower lightoutput. While the effects of short-term exposure to hightemperatures can be reversed, continuous hightemperature operation will cause permanent reductionin light output. LEDs continue to operate even aftertheir light output has decreased to very low levels. This becomes the important factor in determining theeffective useful life of the LED. An LED composes ofa P and N type material that form a junction. The Nmaterial has an excess of electrons and the P materialhas Holes, or a shortage of electrons. When a voltageis applied electrons move across the P-N interface andfills holes on the P side, falling into a lower energy leveland result in a spontaneous emission of a photon. Inpractice, however, impurities and other defects presentin the crystal structure lead to non-radiative electronhole recombination. This event serves only to vibratethe lattice generating heat. This is due to the large mismatch (in lattice constant andin thermal expansion coefficient) between the substrateand the gallium nitride epilayers. The defects affect thedevice reliability, especially at high current densities, and also the light output at UV wavelengths, ElectronicEngineers don't know enough about crystals. therefore, companies are trying to collaborate with academic andindustrial partners to advance the technology.Superbright LED technology today requires an array oftechnologies which may include SMPS topology. Onekey circuit that a superbright needs is a constant currentsource which is needed to keep the LED brightnessconstant under various conditions. We will study somecircuit examples of this in our next article. HTNAndre Smalling is presently a Certification Administratorfor ETA. Alternative energy sources power loads tied to the powergrid. Common electronic devices for AC loads are audio speakers andradio antennas, each with specific matching requirements for bestperformance. In reality, the internal entities can not be separated, as it is difficultto show electrical resistance due to chemical reactions in a battery, resistance of windings in generators, or photon creation in solar panels. For that reason, technicians should not try to measure the internalresistance of power sources with an Ohm meter, as the power source ofthese devices can not be turned off to measure this obscure quantity, and would damage the meter! The data table below shows calculations using values of Ri = 10 Ohms, and 24 volts as a ideal power supply terminal voltage Vt. For illustration here, resistive loads will be used, but keep in mindthat these concepts extend to many applications in alternating currentcircuits. The circuit shows the internal resistance separate inside thebattery outline, driven by an ideal power source which theoretically hasno internal resistance.RLNote that highest dissipation in the load (bolded text) occurs whenits resistance equals the internal resistance of the source. When loadresistance RL matches Ri at 10 Ohms, power dissipated in the load is ata maximum of 14.4 Watts, the highest value listed in the PRL column. Also note that the efficiency, when the load (impedance) is matched tothe source, only 50% results. In other words, when maximum power transfer occurs in a circuit, only50% efficiency is obtained. Higher efficiencies are shown in the righthand column with lighter load as resistance values increase. This impliesthat when a power supply is capable of higher current output (with lowerinternal resistance) than what the load demands, efficiency improves.Larger power supplies are more efficient than smaller ones when onlyused to match loads. It is more efficient when a car battery with lowinternal resistance, is powering a dome light than when it is turning overa starter motor. With this in mind, it makes sense for utility companies to build large powerplants and distribute power over transmission grid facilities with low losstransformers and lines. Efficiency concepts also apply to mechanicaldevices where bigger engines achieve higher mpg in lighter cars.Enjoy your studies of energy and electronics. It all ties together for abetter world. y Lora Roberson, cssWho doesn’t like science fiction movies? From War ofthe Worlds, Star Wars, Star Trek, Close Encountersof the Third Kind to I Robot, Transformers, andWall-E, all those flashing lights, meters, and switches arewhat influenced Steve Fleeman to become interested inelectronics.Steve studied electrical engineering technology (EET) atPurdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. He reallyenjoyed participating in the hands-on training. His seniorproject was based on an artificial brain model called thePerceptron. By 1972 he was constructing neural nets (usingtransistor logic and op amps). His project caught the eye ofhis professors and he was offered a job as their laboratorymanager. While working as a manager he continued hisstudies to earn a masters degree in 1975. Steve was offereda position as an assistant professor of EET with Purdue untila new opportunity arose in 1977.Steve was hired at Sundstrand in Rockford, Illinois, as anelectrical engineer in test equipment design and in groundsupport equipment. What an awesome opportunity to startliving out those childhood interests than to work in theaerospace field? During this time he was asked to designground support equipment for the Space Shuttle Orbiter.Steve was sent in 2000 to the Kennedy Space Center toobserve a test on the Orbiter. While there he got to climb onboard of the Space Shuttle Discovery and crawl around in itsaft bay. It was definitely the thrill of a lifetime for someonewith a passion for science fiction movies.During his 31 years with Sundstrand he continued histeaching career simultaneously at Rock Valley College inRockford, Illinois. Steve has served for 27 years as a fulltimefaculty member as a professor of EET. He teaches avariety of EET courses from circuit analysis to wireless to thehot topic of alternative energy systems. An early retirementoption from Sundstrand about a year ago has afforded himthe opportunity to commit additional study time to teaching.Steve has been with ETA as a Certification Administrator since1990. With the advent of alternative energy certifications hehas become actively involved in helping to author the installerand integrator certification exams. “It has been intense andextremely exciting,” says Steve. When asked how he sees the future of the electronics industrySteve had this to say: “Alternative energy is going to be huge.People with a good electrical and electronics background are goingto be vital to its success. Organic electronics, printed electronics, nanotechnology, photonics, wireless applications, and quantumcomputers are just starting to take off or are on the horizon. Myelectronics education started with vacuum tubes. When I reflect onhow the industry has changed over the years I remain awestruck.”Steve was elected as ETA International’s CommunicationsDivision Chair for 2010. He would like to continue teachingand writing books. He enjoys writing technical articles andlaboratory experiments. We look forward to his continuedinvolvement with the Alternative Energy program, and withETA as a whole. HTNMAR/APR2010 | etainternational.org | 23
