About SimovaSimova is a Distance Learning institution whose aim is to create aninnovative system of learning that is enlightening, flexible, enjoyable andwithin the reach of most people. Our system captures the 21st centuryethos in every sense. And makes use of innovative learning methodologiesto encourage learners to be self-managed, independent and in touchwith the changing demands of the future.Innovative programmes with a 21st century focusSimova’s programmes will provide collateral or subsidiary learning, andare intended to enrich and expand the horizons of both students inconventional college programmes, as well as working professionals. Our programmes cover a wide range of humanities-basedsubjects with a new, future-looking focus. Why Distance Learning?Distance Learning offers flexibility of time, place and pace, which isinvaluable for college students and working professionals.Equally important, Distance Learning is increasingly being recognised asthe best way of learning. According to Distance Education methodology, the teaching function and the learning function have to be separated bydistance if real learning is to happen. Without an authority instructing themon what, when, where and how to learn, learners grow wings. Theybecome independent, thinking individuals and take an active, interestedrole in their education. They are thereby enabled to construct their learningto suit their particular needs or inclinations. In other words, learningbecomes personal, meaningful and lasting.

The Simova Way of LearningOurs is a system that goes beyond conventional DistanceEducation. It is not online learning. The Simova Way of Learning is an integrated learning experiencethat combines printed study material with interaction betweenlearners on our virtual campus and in the real world, where possible.Many-to-Many and Peer Group Collaborative Learning are ourkey methodologies. Our Virtual Campus facilitates Learner Self-Governance, through which the learner is encouraged to takeindependent responsibility for his or her learning process. Simova’srole is largely that of a facilitator.Through this active encouragement of collaboration, potentialproblems of loneliness or confusion are effectively and simplyavoided in the Simova Way of Learning.SimovaDistance Education○ ○ ○

A Closer Look at Simova’s Learning PhilosophyThe Simova method is intended to put learners back where they belong—atthe centre of the learning process. Several factors—the demand-supply gap, newinsights in educational methodology and the ever-changing educational needs ofour society—will bring about this paradigm shift in higher education within thenext 5 years. Simova is a pioneer participating in this revolution.ConventionalEducationCentralisedInstitution-definedClassroom settingFixed durationGroup pacedTeacher-instructedTeacher is mentor/guidePrescribed textIndividual learningExamination determines outcomeDegreesLearning stops with college21st Century Learning:The Simova WayayDiffusedLearner-definedReal-life settingFlexible durationIndividual pacedLearner-constructedPeers, senior learners, others are mentors/guidesLearner discovers text in books, massmedia, Internet and life's experiencesCollaborative LearningProcess determines outcomeCredits in credit bankLifelong learning

The Simova Quality ProcessAs higher education becomes increasingly privatised, conceptslike affiliation and recognition assume less and less significance.Today, organisations everywhere are establishing independentstandards of quality within the industries to which they belong. Thisis a process being adopted in every sphere of activity. Simovaintends to do the same.We will design and develop exclusive benchmarks of excellencein Distance Learning. The Simova Quality Process will cover areasincluding educational methodology, course design, self-instructionalmaterial and student servicing. At the same time, Simova will also establish alliances andaffiliations with Indian and International educational institutions, forcollaboration in educational methodology and production ofoutstanding course material.

Simova Outlook• We believe that human resources are our most precious rawmaterial, so we are prepared to pay the right price for the bestpeople available to us.• We believe the human value of the rupee will always be asimportant as the rupee value of the human.• We believe in moving away from a world of titles, positions, authority, vertical hierarchy and rigid systems and procedures.Ours is a world of roles, functions and responsibilities, workflow, boundarylessness, and continuous renewal of systems andprocesses.• We believe in learning through exploration, discovery anddebate.• We believe that seeing things only in black and white, beingobsessively unambiguous, being rigidly consistent are no longervirtues. The greys are in. Fuzzy logic, reasonable ambiguityand flexibility are today’s priceless values.• We believe in creating long-term relationships.• We believe discovering total solutions is the best way to reachour goals and realise our vision.

What our name meansWe are often asked the meaning of oursomewhat unusual name. It’s a simpleenough explanation: Simova is an anagramof Asimov, which is the last name of therenowned writer Isaac Asimov (1920-1992).Asimov was an astounding polymath. Hewrote more than 450 books, was a compulsivereader and an even more compulsivewriter. Most people know of him as a science-fictionwriter. And as such, he receivedmore honours and lifetime-achievementawards than anyone in thefield.Asimov’s real genius, however, lay elsewhere: he was one of thegreatest explainers of all time. Hewrote—intensively and extensively—on anamazing and awe-inspiring range of subjects. His books cover areas as varied as algebra, arithmetic, astronomy, biology, chemistry,bio-chemistry, comparative history, Greekand Roman history, world history, Shakespeare, the Old and New Testaments, physics, population studies, the etymology ofwords, our past, the future... the list can goon and on.Asimov’s writing style and presentationwere as impressive as his range of writing. He was transparent and lucid; he wrote simplyand engagingly on the most complex ofsubjects. He walked his readers throughideas, playing the role of a guide who revelsin watching his charges make discoveries andfind illumination while in his care.In Distance Education, we callthis “guided didactic conversation”.So whether he realised it or not, heset the highest standard for writingDistance Education study material. In fact, his writing fulfilledall the criteria of excellent self-instructionmaterial.We had a list of possible names for ourinstitution. But somehow it seemed right andfitting that it be Simova. In tribute to one ofthe greatest Distance Educators of all time. And so it is.
