CLUB XVIIINorm NugentFEWSUPRISES INROUND 12Results in Round 11 further complicated the questfor the Section 1 final six as two of the leading sixeasily defeated another two of the current top six.In Section 2, the fact that the Cardinals defeatedHawthorn, has all but decided the top four.In an afternoon game, De La Salle easily defeatedNorth Old Boys/ St Patrick’s by 66 points to putthe Combine in danger of dropping to fifth place. In a spirited and bruising encounter, MonashBlues overcame a big first quarter deficit whenthey kicked five unanswered goals in the secondquarter to go to half time with an 11 point lead. The second half saw the Blues score another fivegoals to one kicked by Fitzroy, who finished thirtyfour points in arrears. Ruckman, Bill Geary, theChapman Brothers and Rojah Jayaweera werestand out players for Monash. Undefeated leaders,Old Xaverians powered to a decisive win over sixthplaced St Bernard’s, who kicked a sole goal as theXaverians powered to a 153 point victory. Prahran/Assumption virtually extinguished any flickerof hope that Ivanhoe harboured for a semi finalmatch, when the “four blues” started a big day fortheir Club with a 75 point victory Old Melburniansbiggest problem against Therry Penola could wellhave to locate the Fawkner Reserve. Once on theground, the Old Melburnians were in completecontrol as they won by one hundred and thirtynine points. Williamstown C.Y.M.S. won on a forfeitfrom Old Ivanhoe. The highlight of the Section 2 results was thefact that the Richmond Cardinals were able to doas they thought they could and that was defeatHawthorn. As a contest this match was evening thenumber of scoring shots each had. The Hawthorninaccuracy really was the major factor in their 24point loss. Kew, too were really inaccurate againstBulleen Templestowe. The Kew margin of 43points would have been greater if their accuracyhad been better. Third placed Therry Penolaeasily won a one sided match against Richmond“Snakes”, who for the second successive week, only managed one goal. Therry Penola won by153 points. After Old Paradians held an 11 pointlead at half time, University High School Old Boys/V.U.T. fought back and at the last change led by sixpoints. Not to be denied, the Paradians regainedthe ascendancy and outscored the Combine inthe last quarter to gain victory by four points. EleyPark forfeited to Old Geelong.Tipping winners in this Round is a hazardousoccupation because teams, whose Clubs are in aPremier Division can play fringe area players fromtheir Reserves as well as injury returnees, whoneed match practice. Here goes!!!North Old Boys/ St Patrick’s travel to Ivanhoe, whereby a visiting team hasn’t been defeatedthere since 1934. The Combine, despite someserious reversals, should defeat Ivanhoe, whoseform has really tapered off over the past fewRounds. Monash Blues should win well again overOld Ivanhoe, who are not enjoying a successfulseason. The long awaited rematch between thetwo leading teams is on today. Old Melburniansjust failed to upset Old Xaverians in Round 1and neither one has been challenged over theintervening ten Rounds. Both are big and strongand each has a forward line capable of kicking bigTODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLDCLUB XVIII (1)Ivanhoe v NOBS/ St PatsMonash Blues v Old IvanhoeOld Xaverians v Old MelburniansPrahran Assumption v De La SalleSt Bernards v Williamstown CYMSTherry Penola v FitzroyCLUB XVIII (2)Bulleen Templestowe v Eley Park SharksHawthorn v Old GeelongKew v Richmond SnakesOld Paradians v Richmond CardinalsTherry Penola v UHS-VU44 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012
