Geoff ReilleyRETRO12 MONTHS AGO – 2011Old Melburnians defeated Old Scotch in PremierSection and in doing so improved their chancesof avoiding relegation while placing Old Scotchin a more vulnerable position. It was a closetussle all day until OM’s kicked away to win11.12 to 9.10. Best – Zengstock, Playfair, Prowse,Dunnell (4), Campbell, Lomardozzi (OM’s) andBowdern, Ronaldson, Eva (3), Jamieson, Pike,Armstrong (Scotch).In Premier B, Beaumaris took Uni Blacks’ spot inthe top four in a thriller 11.10 to 10.13. It wasa great win for the Sharks at the Uni Oval. Best– Petering, Haynes, Carroll, Buckley, Barnes,Howes (Beaumaris) and Kalms, Richardson,Matthews, Gaylor, Stevic, Howgate (Blacks).Premier B senior coaches were Chris Tankard(St Bernards), Marc Woolnough (Uni Blacks),Paul McCormack (Old Brighton), JasonMifsud (Beaumaris), Stephen McPherson(Marcellin), Craig Hunter (Old Ivanhoe), StuartPowell (St Kevins), Steve Lawrence (CaulfieldGrammarians), David Gately (Oakleigh) andRussell Barnes (Hampton Rovers).5 YEARS AGO – 2007In A Section Old Scotch recorded a reallyvaluable win against Collegians 17.7 to 9.8,somewhat against the predictions of ‘theexperts’ and the result meant Collegians lostsome valuable ground in their efforts to viefor the double chance. Old Scotch moved notonly another game clear of relegation but werenot without a chance to challenge for finals.Scotch held sway for most of the game after aneven start and Adam Houlihan’s 7 goals werecritical to the result. Best – Houlihan, Lorenzini,Thompson, Aurel-Smith, Armstrong, Lawrence.In B Section the bottom two teams, CaulfieldGrammarians and MHSOB, met at the HighSchool Oval and it would be MHSOB’s lastchance at avoiding relegation. It was not tobe however as Caulfield proved too strongto win 15.15 to 10.9 leaving MHSOB withonly 1 win and Caulfield 3 wins, <strong>one</strong> behindOld Melburnians and AJAX. Best – Tassell, MSundberg, Browne, Edwards, Strain, Lawson(Caulfield) and Thompson, Evans, McIntyre,Richmond, Whittington, Hogan (MHSOB).Simon Stokes and Leah Gallagher were the fieldumpires.10 YEARS AGO – 2002Yarra Valley Old Boys continued to performat a high level in D2 Section, this time at theexpense of Kew and won 18.20 to 6.3. Best –Valoppi, N Pask, Stevenson (5), St<strong>one</strong>, Taylor, ADew (Yarra Valley) and Fabinyi, Hunter, Russo,Woodhouse, Marchesani, Dalrymple (Kew).Senior club Captain at Yarra Valley Old Boys,Brad Peake played his 150 th game. A memberof both the 1994 and 1997 premiership sidesBrad was a highly skilled, courageous playerand best and fairest winner.West Brunswick went to the top of the D3Section ladder when they pushed St Johnsto second place on percentage following the16.6 to 10.6 victory. Best – Pietsch, D Edwards,Brockley, R Benjamin, Byrne, Sheldon (WB)and Koppens, M J<strong>one</strong>s, Dragwidge, Holmes,Cockayne (StJ).Middle of the road team in D4 Section, StMary’s, pushed the leaders, Werribee, beforethe ‘Bees’ came from behind in the last to win12.10 to 9.13. Best – Schimbri, Camilleri, Keogh,Lovell (3), Marinis (3), Johnson (Werribee) andGilchrist, Hendy, O’Halloran, Proctor, A Dwyer,Goldworthy (StM).32 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2012
