ABOUT THE APPRAISAL INSTITUTEThe Appraisal Institute is the result of the 1991 unification ofthe appraisal profession’s two most respected organizations:the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers and theSociety of Real Estate Appraisers. Although newly formed,the Appraisal Institute draws on more than 50 years of experienceand fosters high standards in the field of real estateappraising.Appraisal Institute Membership DesignationsThe world’s leading organization of professional real estateappraisers, the Appraisal Institute is composed of generalappraisal members who hold the MAI, SREA, or SRPA designationand residential appraisal members who hold the SRAor RM designation. Identified by their experience and knowledgeof real estate valuation, these members adhere to astrictly enforced Code of Professional Ethics and Standardsof Professional Appraisal Practice.Holding an Appraisal Institute membership designation setsmembers apart from the rest of the appraisal community.Members holding Appraisal Institute designations are recognizedas the most qualified in their fields.MAISRPASRAThe MAI membership designation is held by memberswho are experienced in the valuation and analysis ofcommercial, industrial, residential, and other types ofproperties, and who advise clients on real estateinvestment decisions.The SRPA membership designation is held by memberswho are experienced in the valuation of commercial,industrial, residential, and other types of properties.The SRA membership designation is held by memberswho are experienced in the valuation of singlefamilyhomes, townhouses, and residential incomeproperties up to and including four units.In addition to its professionally designated members, theAppraisal Institute also has associate and affiliate membershipcategories. Both receive such benefits as discounts oneducation programs and publications, subscriptions to informativeperiodicals, and insurance programs, as well as valuableopportunities to network with appraisers and others inrelated professions.Associate MembershipAssociate members of the Appraisal Institute are actively pursuingthe MAI or SRA designation. Many benefits and opportunitiesare available to those who pursue an Appraisal Institutedesignation. If you are interested in a career incommercial appraising, you are invited to complete MAI designationrequirements; those interested in a career in residentialappraising are invited to fulfill SRA designationrequirements.To be an associate member you must meet the minimumrequirements established by the Appraiser QualificationsBoard of The Appraisal Foundation. For instance, meeting astate’s requirements for becoming a state certified realestate appraiser would fulfill these criteria. By having theexperience and education required by the AQB, you areexempt from the Level I education requirements of theAppraisal Institute, with the exception of the Standards ofProfessional Practice Course, Part A (Course/Exam 410).As an associate member of the Appraisal Institute, youdemonstrate to your clients that you are educating yourselfbeyond the level necessary for state certification — you areon your way to reaching the pinnacle in the appraisal field.Affiliate MembershipAffiliate members are individuals who are interested inalliance with the Appraisal Institute, but are not necessarilyinterested in achieving an Appraisal Institute designation.The affiliate category includes government or review appraisers,international appraisers, appraiser trainees/paraappraisers,attorneys, bankers, students, and others.Affiliates enjoy the many benefits of membership in theAppraisal Institute — newsletters, magazines, and discountson publications, courses and seminars.23
