The AC works closely with the PI and is responsible fordirecting the day-to-day operations <strong>of</strong> <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong>. The AC also works closely with the Steering Committeeand External Advisory Committee to continually work to improve the overall research and student/facultydevelopment and training activities <strong>of</strong> <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong>. A major responsibility for the AC has been to establish,facilitate and evaluate a network <strong>of</strong> biomedical researchers at predominately undergraduate institutions(PUIs). The AC also works with Core Directors to establish workshops and training sessions and to facilitatethe operation <strong>of</strong> the Summer Research Program. AC members also normally prepare two newsletters ayear and work with the IT Coordinator to help maintain the <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong> website (www.<strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong>.org).Specific Core activities are described in the appropriate subproject descriptions and progress reports.SUBPROJECT PROGRESSThe current funding year is the third year <strong>of</strong> Phase II <strong>of</strong> <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong>. The lead institution wasMarshall University with West Virginia University serving as a partner lead institution. The AC, led byPI Dr. Gary Rankin, Marshall University, has been involved in many activities during the currentgrant year (Y11). One <strong>of</strong> those activities was conducting a competition among partner institution(PUI) faculty for new major PUI research awards. The overall scores and critiques were reviewedby the AC and submitted to External Advisory Committee (EAC) members for their review andrecommendation. Based on EAC recommendations, three applications were selected for funding.These projects were selected to be funded starting in May, 2012 and will be conducted by Dr. YiChen, Alderson-Broaddus College, Dr. Joseph Horzempa, West Liberty University, and Dr. QingPHS 2590 (Rev. 06/09)Continuation Format Page

The AC and EAC are discussing a replacement for Dr. Ramos. In addition, the ACalso coordinated the very successful Summer Research Program during the summer <strong>of</strong> 2011,which culminated with the Summer Research Symposium held at Marshall University on July 28,2011.Dr. Sheil published a <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong> newsletter for the fall <strong>of</strong> 2011. Information Technology CoordinatorBrian Patton has been working with Elsa Mangiarua to continue the redesign and updating <strong>of</strong> the<strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong> website: http://www.wv-inbre.net/. Many areas <strong>of</strong> the website have already beenupdated, and work is in progress to update the remaining portions <strong>of</strong> the website and change theoverall design.Faculty at the partner institutions competed for Faculty Research Development Awards (FRDAs) tobegin in Y11. Four applications totaling $90,000 were selected for funding with awards beingprovided to Alderson-Broaddus College (1), Shepherd University (1), and the University <strong>of</strong>Charleston (2). Based on the Y10 competition for major PUI research awards, Dr. Tesfaye Belay,Bluefield State College was selected to receive a major PUI research award for Y11 for his projectentitled “Effect <strong>of</strong> stress on pathogenesis <strong>of</strong> Chlamydia trachomatis and immune responses in amouse model”. Dr. Belay is a previous FRDA recipient. In addition, carryover funds were obtained topurchase equipment to upgrade cores at Marshall University and West Virginia University and toprovide new equipment at eight PUIs.Steering Committee and External Advisory Committee Meetings: A Steering Committee meeting washeld on July 27, 201 at Marshall University and attended by three External Advisory Committee(EAC) members (Tew [Chair <strong>of</strong> the EAC], Cutler and Yang). Dr. Fornsaglio, who could not attend,reviewed all meeting materials and contributed to the report. Their EAC report is attached. Asecond meeting is being planned for early April, 2012.Additional Meetings and Presentations: (1) Drs. Rankin, Sheil and Primerano attended the IDeANetworks <strong>of</strong> Biomedical Research Excellence (<strong>INBRE</strong>) PIs and PCs meeting at NIH on October 4,2011. (2) Dr. Rankin also met with other Southeast Region PIs on September 21, 2011 in NewOrleans, LA to discuss best practices in each <strong>INBRE</strong> in our region. (3) Dr. Rankin attended theSoutheast Regional IDeA Meeting in New Orleans, LA on September 22-24, 2011. Dr. Rankin alsoco-chaired an oral session entitled Cancer I. (4) Drs. Rankin, Sheil and Primerano helped the WestVirginia University COBRE PI, Dr. Laura Gibson, to plan and host the 2011 West Virginia IDeAMeeting. The meeting was held on October 21-22, 2011 at Waterfront Place Hotel in Morgantown,<strong>WV</strong>. Dr. Rankin presented an update on <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong>, while Dr. Primerano discussed genomics andnext generation sequencing. Dr. Santanam gave an oral presentation entitled “Epicardial fatbiomarkers in patients with coronary artery disease: <strong>WV</strong>-Appalachian Heart Study”. (5) Dr. Rankinalso prepared a presentation entitled “Update on NIH EPSCOR-Like Programs” for the WestVirginia Science and Research Council meeting on January 26, 2012.The AC is continuing to develop the links between <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong> and the West Virginia UniversityHealth Sciences and Technology Academy (HSTA) program headed by PI, Dr. Ann Chester. The<strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong>/HSTA Coordinator, Valerie Watson (<strong>WV</strong>U) has established interactive connections withthe HSTA regional clubs throughout the state and representatives <strong>of</strong> the <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong> partnerinstitutions. Ms. Watson coordinated talks by <strong>INBRE</strong> undergraduate research interns and highschool science educator research interns at some HSTA club meetings. Informational brochureswere sent to HSTA Field Site Coordinators in 18 West Virginia counties. In addition, a<strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong>-HSTA Task Force has been formed to explore ways to enhance the <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong> andHSTA interactions. <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong> also utilized one <strong>of</strong> its four supplements to enhance <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong>HSTA activities.
