Faculty from MarshallUniversity and West Virginia University will provide research projects and mentoring for students during the9-week program. During the course <strong>of</strong> the program, supplemental activities including lectures and seminarson various topics related to biomedical research and careers in the biomedical sciences are presented tothe students. They are encouraged to consider obtaining post-graduate training in the biomedical sciencesfollowing graduation. In the last week <strong>of</strong> the program, a summer research symposium will be held wherestudents will present the results <strong>of</strong> the their project before their peers and <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong> members and facultymembers. Students will be encouraged to present their research at other meetings in West Virginia andthroughout the country.SUBPROJECT PROGRESSSixty-eight students from the partner institutions (PUIs) applied for the Summer Research Programin Y11. Twenty-two students were accepted with eleven conducting research at MarshallUniversity and eleven at West Virginia University under the mentorship <strong>of</strong> faculty at the leadinstitutions. The program was concluded on July 28, 2011 with a Summer Research Symposiumheld at Marshall University. Dr. Terrence J. Monks, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Chair <strong>of</strong> Pharmacology andToxicology, College <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy, University <strong>of</strong> Arizona Health Sciences Center was the keynotespeaker. Students and faculty from the Summer Program, PIs holding major PUI research awards,those supported by Faculty Research Development Awards and students and high school teacherssupported by the <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong>--HSTA initiative made oral and poster presentations; a total <strong>of</strong> 56poster and 6 oral presentations were made by participants. In the fall <strong>of</strong> 2011, the 2012 SummerResearch Program was promoted at all <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong> partner institutions through presentations orthrough announcements mailed to the institutions. For the 2012 program, a Mentors Directorylisting prospective research mentors and available projects for the summer research program, aswell as application forms for the summer student internship and faculty fellowship programs, weredeveloped and placed on the <strong>WV</strong>-<strong>INBRE</strong> website. Electronic submission <strong>of</strong> applications wasavailable. Currently, the supplemental activities <strong>of</strong> the summer program for Y11 are beingdeveloped. Three summer interns made presentations at the 9th Annual Undergraduate ResearchDay at the Capitol in Charleston, <strong>WV</strong> on January 26, 2012. Summer interns presented theirsummer research at the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) Annual Meeting in San Francisco,CA (Feb 2012), the American College <strong>of</strong> Sports Medicine (ACSM) Annual Meeting in Denver, CO(June 2011), the American Association for Cancer Research 102nd Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL(April 2011), and the American Association for Cancer Research Metabolism and Cancer SpecialConference in Baltimore, MD (October 2011).PROTECTION AGAINST RESEARCH RISKSN 1.
