My dear readers,Wahe guru ji ka khalsa.Wahe guru ji ki fateh.EditorialHoli is a festival of colours and is celebrated throughoutthe country with great jest and fervour. A myth is also associatedwith this festival. Raja Harnakash worshiped the God with suchdevotion that the God declared him to be an immortal who shallneither be killed on a day or on a night. This acquiredsuperpower transformed him into an egoistic Raja. He forced hispeople to worship him only as a God. But his son Prahaladrevolted against him and became a staunch follower (Bhagat) ofthe Prabhu whose name was being recited by him all the time. This infuriated the Raja who tortured Prahalad but it was all invain. Desperately he asked his sister Holika to sit in fire bykeeping Prahlad in her lap. Holika had been blessed by the God tobe fire-proof but at this moment Parmatma protected. Hisdevotee while Holika was burnt alive. This was the victory ofDharma over Adharma. This message is conveyed on the day ofHoli that ultimately truth shall triumph over falsehood. However this message of goodness is submerged in the way thisfestival is being celebrated. Instead of remembering thismessage alongwith making this festival of colours like thecolours of the nature around during this season so that ourspirits might bloom with happiness, it has degenerated into thepractices of vulgarity and indecency where mud, cowding etc.are thrown on each other. The use of drugs like Bhang etc. arealso in vogue.Guru Arjan said about Holi :-j'bh ehBh ;zs ;/t.. ozr bkrk nfs bkb d/t.. Page 1180(Holi should be the service of the saintly people thereby myinnerelf is deeply coloured with the love of the Parmatma)Guru Gobind Singh Ji understood the ignoble nature of theHoli festival. There was the need of changing the character of thecelebration of this festival as it was not bringing harmony orgood moral values among the people and was also giving fillip tothe use of intoxicants. People were forgetting the message ofPrahlad of the victory of the Goodness over Evil. They were alsobecoming timid and were not aware of the real danger of theopression by the Mughal rulers under the rule of Aurangzeb whoThe first step towards solving a problem is to begin.Principal Hari SinghAssistant EditorEnglish Sectionwas highly communal andautocrate. The Hindus were notallowed to perform their faith withdignity and were oppressed byspecial taxes.Guru Gobind Singh Ji startedthe practice of Hola-Mohalla andthereby transformed the nature ofthe Holi festival. He tactfullybrought the spirit of Sant-Sipahiamong his followers.Hola is an Arabic word andmeans Hamla (Attack). Mohalla is aPersian word which means 'A placeof attack'.Sikhism emphasizes tostrengthan physical fitness alongwith spiritual growth. Guru AngadDev Ji started Mal Akharas(wrestling). Guru Hargobind Jistarted the use of weapons andfought four battles with Mughals. He wore two swords of Miri & Piri.Guru Gobind Singh Jiinculcated the martial spirit amonghis followers in an organised way atAnand Pur Sahib by impartingexcellent training of the use of thevarious types of weapons andteaching the art of horse riding.First Hola-Mohalla wasorganised in 1690 AD at Fort (Kila)Holgarh and it was made a regularexercise every year on the day ofHola-Mohalla. Prior to this day, there used to be the congregation ofthe Sikhs for fifteen days duringMarch 200725

which period the atmosphere of martial spirit used to begenerated by the preachers, dhadhis, kirtan and the display ofweapon feats. Then on the final day, the Hola-Mohalla used tostart from a special place of Kila Holgarh to reach the KilaFategarh. During this period of the March, there used to be mockfight between two battallions of the Sikh forces. Any battalliancapturing the Kila Fategarh used to be honoured by the Guru. This transformation of the method of celebration of Holifestival by the Guru changed the psyche of the Sikhs completelyand infused the high spirit of Chardi Kala which wastransformed into the creation of the Khalsa by the Guru on theday of Vasakhi of 1699 AD. This Khalsa was declared by the Guruto be 'Akal-Purakh Ki Fauj'. It was assigned the duty of protectingThe Spirit of Sevathe Dharma and to fight against anykind of oppression or injustice in thesociety. This type of Khalsa musthave high moral values, have highphysical fitness, be free from the useof drugs and be tuned to God therebybe known as a Sant-SipahiLet us think on this daysolemnly whether we are aware ofour rich heritage and whether weare true followers of our Guru asdesired by him.Last month, while traveling to Pune with my daughter,I strained my leg muscle in the coach and by the time ourtrain arrived, I was not in position to move even a yard. The retiring rooms at the station were full. Just then, aSikh gentleman who had observed us came up andsuggested that we move to the nearby gurudwara in theCamp area. Within a few minutes he arrived with anautorickshaw and gave the driver directions and us, hiscontact number. The gurudwara authorities immediately allotted aroom to us and I was taken to the hospital run by theirtrust. After giving first aid, the doctor guided us for furthertreatment in the nearby nursing home and within twodays' stay at the gurudwara, I had improved considerablyand was in position to recommence my journey.I have often read about the Sikh community's nobleacts of service without any consideration of caste, religionor faith, especially I when natural calamities hit and leavetrails of human devastation. It seemed as if they felt thatservice to humanity was divinely ordained and the guidingpath to reach God. This time I had experienced it myself ineveryday life. The serene ambience at the gurdwara wasalso very soothing for me.As an Indian living in India, where people practice(This report apeared in Hindustan Times dated 15-2-2007)Bhartendu Sooddifferent faiths I have a chance toknow something about allreligions. It is a fact that all religionspreach selfless service tohumanity. Lord Krishna says inthe Gita, "Dear Arjuna, there is nofall for him either here orhereafter who works for the goodof others." Prophet Mohammedsays "That man is a Muslim whoworks for the happiness andbenefit of God's creatures."Similarly the Bible says God loveshim who is in the service of Hischildren. But when it comes topractice, there are not enough ofus who can match the spirit ofour Sikh brethren.Where does the differencelie? Is it a talisman passed on tothem by their Gurus?March 200726

Food and HealthCauses and Remediesof Food AllergyThe persons with food allergies and other types of foodsensitivities react adversely to the ingestion of food and foodingredients which, otherwise most people can ingest with noadverse reaction. It is therefore essential for those with a foodallergy to know which foods to avoid and also to have an advice onhow to deal with an allergic reaction when problem food is eaten asa hidden component.Heredity may cause predisposition to have allergies of anytype and repeated exposure of allergens start sensitizing these whoare susceptible. Recessive gene has been identified as being linkedto Ig E - mediated food allergies. Some expert says that a specificallergy can rarely be passed on from parent to child. Infant who areexclusively breast fed are save from food allergies. Persons whohave dust or pollen allergies and asthma are more prone to foodallergies.Amarjeet KaurDepartment of Food Science& Technology PAU, LDH4. Food aversion :Some people arepsychologically convinced thatcertain foods disagree with them, however when tested, fail to react tothat food. This is a commonoccurrence with many persons and isreferred to as food aversion.Mechanism of Food allergy :Allergen is consumed, sensitizing the individual.Sensitization results in production ofallergen-specific 1g E - antibodieswhich then attach to receptors onmast cells and basophiles. UponWhat is Food allergy :Food sensitivities - which is term used for foodallergies are individualistic adverse reactions to foods. Thereare 4 primary food sensitivities :1. Food Allergy :It is a reaction in which the body immune system isdirectly involved. The immune system recognises a reactionproviding substance or allergen/antigen in food usuallynaturally, occurring proteins in the food as foreign matter andproduces anti bodies to check the action of allergens. As thisreaction proceeds, symptoms appear throughout the body asswelling of lips, vomiting, diarrhoea, rashes.2. Food intolerance :It is an adverse reaction to a food in which bodyimmune system is not involved. These reactions involves foodmalabsortiondue to intestinal enzyme deficiency, as inlactose into lerance, naturally occuring chemicals in foods(salicylates, histamines), presence of preservatives, (sodiumbenzoate & sulfhites), flavourants (MSG, aspartame or colourants(tatrazine)3. Food toxicity :This is another adverse food reaction due to presenceof toxins naturally occurring in food like glycoalkaloids (in potato),cyanogenic glycosides (in beans) and bacterial contamination.Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasmsubsequent exposure to the allergenicsubstance, the allergen cross-linkstwo antibodies on the surface of themast cell or basophiles membrane, stimulating release of chemicalmediators of the allergic responseinto tissue and blood. Basophiles.Upon subsequent exposure to theallergenic substance, the allergencross-links two antibodies on thesurface of the mast cell or basophilesmembrane, stimulating release ofMarch 200728

chemical mediators of the allergic response into tissue and blood.Clinical symptoms :The symptoms are shown in Table-1.Table : Symptoms of Food AllergiesGastrointestinal Cutaneous Respiratory Other(skin)AnaphylacticNausea Urticaria Rhinitis ShockVomiting Eczema Asthma HypotensionDiarrhoea Atopic DermatitisAbdominal pain AngioedemaColicSince foods are ingested, gastrointestinal syndromes aremore commenly encountered and respiratory syndromes are lesscommon. Fresh fruits, vegetables and spices may cause local tissuereactions on the lips, in the mouth and throat. Some food allergic people develop shortness of breath &fainting. Anaphylactic shock is the most serious manifestation andinvolves gastrointestinal track, skin, respiratory track andcardiovascular and/respiratory collapse within minutes of theoffending food. diet and diagnostic test to rule out other conditions. Tests includedirect allergy skin tasks, blood tests or 'elimination and challenge'tests for suspected foods. Radioalergo sorbent test (RAST test) is askin test that can also be used. The sage test is comprehensive, testing all the pathways in which all allergic reactions can occur. The most accurate test is a controlled challenge test, often done in"blind" or "double blind' fashion to elimeate psychological factors.Other test like 'food cytotoxic blood test's and sublingualprovocation food testing have also been promoted as supposeddiagnostic tools to detect food allergies.Treatment :Treatment is based on the blocking of the immune responseor in more severe cases, at suppressing the functions with steroids. For treatment of an anaphylactic reactions, epinephrine anaturally occurring adrenalin is injected into the vein directlywhen cardiovascular and respiratory systems appears, causingimprovement in breathing and simulating the heart beat.Vitamin C is antiallergy andhelps to stabilize mast cells whichrelease allergy mediating chemicals.Allergy specialist starts fromrecording a patient's medical history, current diet and symptoms. Patientshistory is used to identify immediatefood allergies and sage test will beused to identify delayed food allergies(50-100.) Foods that tests positive arethen eliminated from the patients dietand substituted with other foodsupplement. After six weeks, suspectfoods are reintroduced into thepatients diet & if their is reoccurrenceof the symptoms, than the foodis excluded for six months to a year'sat which they will be challengedagain.Wanted Girls1. 29 yr, 5'6", Business in Raw. Message of Bhagat RavidassPrincipal Hari SinghAssistant EditorEnglish SectionBhagat Ravidass Ji was a great spiritual soul and heawakened the common man especially the low caste strata of thesociety. We have celebrated his birthday on 2nd February, 2007.He was born at Kanshi (Benaras) in a poor family of Chamar, caste which was considered to be a very low caste at that time.Benaras was and is still a known Hindu religious place wherehighly learned Brahamans (Pandits) were residing who hadstrong control over the society. The low-caste people weredenied the rights of reading religious books or to perform Puja-Path. Idol-worship was the practice that was preached by thePandits.Bhagat Ravidas rejected idol-worship and while doing hisKirt of a cobbler, started worshiping one God (Prabhu) andcompletely surrendered before the Almighty. Due to his devotionand his good deeds, he acquired high spiritual knowledge (Gyan)and became a highly elevated spiritual soul. He said in his Banithat he had attained this high position by Simran of Prabhu andkeeping the company of Sadh-Sangat. He stood against thefalsehood and of oppression in the society as was practiced bythe Pandits. He said boldly that the low caste people could alsobecome pious or great if their deeds are good with the grace ofGod ;Bhuj T{u eo? w/ok r'fpzd[ ekj{ s/ B vo?..Bkwd/t epho[ fsb'uB[ ;XBk ;?B[ so?..(okr[ wko{, gzBk ƒƒ‚ˆ)His teachings influenced large sections of society at thattime. He had to face the opposition and humiliation of thePandits but he stood to his ground. He was aware of his lowcastebut had such an high-esteem due to his high spiritualawakening that he boldly said himself as Ravidas Chamar. On account of the similarities of his teachings and theteachings of the Gurus, his Bani consisting of 40 Shabads in 16Ragas was incorporated in the Adi Granth by Guru Arjan Dev Ji.As Bhagat Ravidass suffered intensely on account of rigidnorms of segregation in the society of that time, he wanted asociety or place where there was no injustice and oppression. Hegave the vision of an abode known as Begam Pura ;Old age is not the name of an old body-it is the name of an old mindp/rw g[ok ;jo e' BkT[..d{y[ nzd'j[ Bjh fsfj mkT[..BK s;th; fyoki[ B wkb[..yT[c[ B ysk B so;[ itkb[..(okr[ rT[Vh gzBk …†‡)In this Begam Pura, there areno sufferings, no fears, no tensions,no taxes and no losses. Every bodyis happy, contented and is treatedequally with respect. The shackles of casteism havebecome weak in India but yet thedisease has not yet completelyvanished. Similarly the concept ofBegampura has not yet beenachieved in practice. Our rulerselected by the vote-system are notgenerally committed towards thewelfare of the society and moralvalues are being corrupted day byday as Dharma as enunciated bythe Gurus & Bhagat Ravidass is notthe part of the political life in thesociety Illama Iqbal said ;ibkb/ gksFkjh j' :kiwj{oh swkFk j'.i[dk j' dhB f;nk;s ;/,s' ofj iksh j? uzr/}h.while remembering BhagatRavidass Ji, let us awakenourselves to build an egalitariansociety based on high moral valuesand also to remember that it is notthe high caste but the good deedsthat makes a person great andpious.March 200731

compiled byViews of Non-Sikhs aboutSikhs and their GurusSikhs in IranDuring the rule of the emperor Rera Shah of Iran in 1905 AD,a few sikh contractors and workers were serving in Iran andthey used to stay at a place called DUBZAB (Theif Lake). One daythe emperor asked one of his ministers about these turbandpeople with flowing beards. He informed the emperor that theyare Sikhs from India and narrated him about the Sikh ethics andgood religions values. The minister also informed about thegreat contribution being made by these contractors for thewelfare and growth of the country. The emperor was thrilled tohear all this and said they look like pious Muslim Saints/Zahibs.With reverence to these noble Sikhs, he changed the name of thecity from Dubzeb to Zahdare which means the city of saintpeople.Historian Mohammad Latif said about Guru Gobind Singh Ji :-Nigahe marde moman se, Badal jati Hai TakdeerinEven a sight of a great pious soul changes the destiny ofmany.Shri Ranbir Editor of Daily MilapAnyone who reads Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is definitelymoved by intense emotions and feelings and his heart becomespurified and serene. This great scripture enlivens the depressedhearts, dejected and shattered lives and fulfills them withpassion to accomplish something in life.Pandit Madan Mohan MalviyaHe had so much respect for the Sikh religion on account ofthe great sacrifices and good deeds of the Sikhs for the protectionof their Dharma and the Hindu Dharma that he asked everyHindu family to baptise one person in the family to become aSingh of Guru Gobind Singh and thereby safeguard the trueDharma of the Hindu families.Preist From WhinchesterIn early 1970's in the city of Southampton in England, therewas a reception for inaugural function of a New Mayor.Everyone was wishing good luck to the New Mayor andArchibishop by passing in front of them while lifting his hat andbowing to the Archibishop as a mark of respect. There were fewSikhs attending the same function and were in a fix how to greetthem. Seeing the Sikh in this difficult situation, the Archibishipgot up from the chair and approached these Sikhs. He put hisSimaranpreet KaurNew Delhihands on their shoulders & tookthem to the dias and started praisingthe Sikhs & the noble Sikh religion. He narrated that once his daughter& son-in-law visited India. Whenthey were traveling by Road fromBombay to Delhi, some wickedrascals attacked them & woundedhis son-in-law. They got hold of hisdaughter and wanted to molest her.She cried for help and by chanceanother car reached there in time inwhich four Sikhs were there. Theysensed the situation & saved thedaughter & his son-in-law from theclutches of the bandits. Theyprovided medical aid and alsomoney to travel in India & to go backto England. The Archibishopinformed one and all that thesepeople are called Sikhs and theyhave been ordered by Guru GobindSingh to wear turban & keep hairs. They had been assigned the duty bytheir Gurus to fight against injusticeand tyranny in the society by leadingpious lives.Such are the good opinions ofthe Non-Sikhs about our Gurus andabout our great religion. We shouldbe proud of our rich heritage andshould live our lives as per thedictates of our great Gurus & GuruGranth Sahib in order to get theblessings of our Gurus and theadimirations of the Non-Sikhs. OurGurus have taught us of alwaysdoing good deeds and be free fromintoxicants. Let us be aware of ourshortcomings which are slowly andslowly creeping in our religion andin our lives. We should be braveenough to fight the evil forces and bealways be in Chardhi-Kala.March 200732

Serena Williams destroyedRussion topseed Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-2 in the finds to clinchher eight Grand Slam title. Unseeded after a year plagued byinjury & dismissed by many as merely a dangerous floater at thestart of the event, the American made a mockery of ranking bytearing the US Open Champion apart in just over an hour onRodLaver Arena. Delighted on her great success Serenadedicated this triumph to her sister who missed the event due toinjury. Williams, winner here in 2003 & 2005 became the secondunseeded women in the professional era to lift the title, following Chris O' Neils success in 1978. squad, the Indian team for the Carribean World Cup wasselected on expected lines. Sehwag & Pathan should considerthemselves lucky to be on the flight to the Island countries giventheir recent run of poor form but the lack of bench strength andthese players old exploits led to their inclusion. Romesh Powarshould feel most unlucky to have been omitted despite his goodshowing almost every time he took the field. The treatmentmeted out to VVSLaxman & Gautam Gambir should also havebeen avoided but the selectors opted for players viewing theirprevious record & experience. The biggest question to all thesides at this World Cup is also the nature of wickets inCarribean? Newly laid tracks & how they respond will only beclear after the games begin. The team which adopts quickly onthem with available resources is bound to lead others for thecharge to attain the glory. One is hopeful that Dravid & his teamcomes up with good show in the World Cup as the victories inhome series against West Indies and Sri Lanka have arousedhope in the fans. Both the series victories saw key playerscoming back to form. Sachin Tendulkar's trademark & blazingcentury after the long gap, Dada stamping his authority as areliable opener & winning the man of the series against Sri Lankahas consolidated the opening slot. The middle orderstrengthened by Yuvraj coming to form & his knee holding goodalong with the bowling of Munaf & Zaheer augurs well beforethe big test. Only area of concern is India's fielding & runningbetween the wickets, two key areas on which any teams successin the World Cup during crunch situation would depend. The loss of Australian side to the resurgent English teamin the one day finals has given hope to all the teams around theworld. The return of Michael Vaughan at the helm eased allrounder Flintoff's game & the inspiration of these two wastopped with great knocks, two centuries and one fifty, by PaulCollingwood in the semis and finals. The fast bowling byPlunket, Sajid Mahmood & Monty Panesar's spin createdpressure on Australia leading to one of the most remarkableturnarounds in English teams fortunes. Further the loss ofAustralia to New Zealand in Chappell-Hadlee series has given abody blow to the pride and ranking of mighty Australia. For thefirst time since the inception of rankings in one dayer historysince 2002, the Australia side has slipped to no 2 behind SouthAfrica who regained the top slot courtesy one day emphaticseries win over India and Pakistan. The loss by 10 wicketsagainst New Zealand in st onedayer, the first of its kind in Aussiehistory and later losing the series and being Black Washed whenthe bowling could not defend huge scores of 336 & 346 has givenbreathing space to the rest of the teams and the aura ofinvincibility of Australia has been breached. But this does not inany way confirmed that the recentlosses are going to hamperAustralia's charge in defending theWorld Cup as they are bound tocome in a very Australianish andstrong manner in the Carribean. Asfar as other sides are concerned, reaching the top slot in one dayer issurely going to give fillip to thechances of South Africa winning thecup for the first time as it hasemerged as very balanced and closeknit unit under the astute leadershipof Graham Smith. Similarly aspiringto lay their hands, for the first time,on the World Cup glory NewZealand's all round capabilities ledby wily Stephen Fleming & Englishunder inspirational Michel Vaughanwith their new found belief are sureto put their best foot forward. Notfar behind would be old WorldChampion's India , Pakistan and SriLanka from sub-continent, whowould have advantage with similarsort of condition in West Indies andsurely the host West Indies playingat home would like to regain its lostglory under the mercurial BrianLara. In the end, 7 years afterCronje-gate, Alarm bells rang againwhen match fixing's ugly head roseagain with Marlon Samuel's namecoming to fore with him caughtcontacting a known bookie. In anecho of the first known, fixingscandal, Samuel was also caughtdiscussing team strategy with abookie in Nagpur. So close topremier event in cricketing calenderone sincerely hopes & prays that thisugly aspect doesn't hog the lime lightfor all the wrong reasons and thethrills & chills of the Gentleman'sgame continues unabated by greatcricket played on the field fairly &squarely.
