Valedictorian Gabrielle Aquino’s Speech:In the second grade I lost the class spelling bee to Shannon Streiselwith the word “diet”. Who knew that a girl who couldn’t spell asimple four letter word would be standing here before you today, making this speech, and capable of spelling “diet” along with a lotof other words for that matter? You see, I believe there are a lot ofthings in this world that are believed to be impossible that don’thave to be. No one ever believed the Giants could beat the Patriotsin the Superbowl- twice, that it could snow before Halloween, orthat the awkward, confused freshman that walked through theseUC doors in September of 2008 would be sitting in this gym, wearingcaps and gowns, ready to move onto the next phase of theirlives. Have we ever really thought that this day would come? This is a very exciting time in our lives. We are going throughall these feelings- bittersweet sadness, nostalgia, and excitement.Maybe by this time, some of us already know what we want todo with our lives while others still have no clue. And that’s fine. There is a whole life ahead of us full of things that will continueto shape us. Our high school years were full of failures, mistakes, and lessons-learned. We discovered pieces of ourselves that didn’tknow existed until they were tested and challenged. We changedevery day, and needless to say, we still are changing. But, we can’tbe afraid of the life ahead. Yes, it’s scary. But, there is a saying thata ship in harbor is a safe one, but that is not what ships are for. Explore, take the road less traveled, fall in love, seize opportunities, and continue to learn from your mistakes. And every time somethingdoesn’t go your way, persevere by remembering the timesyou stayed up late studying, practiced until your body was sore, orfought through a really difficult struggle that you eventually overcame. With the memories of our accomplishments and realizationof how many people are here to support us, we just might make itthough. There are many people we can thank for getting us to this day.To the teachers that believed in us and the parents and guardiansthat put our needs before their own, we give undying gratitude. We would not be the rising superstars, athletes, politicians, peacemakers,or awesome people we are today without them. To myown family, I just want to thank you for being pillars of strengthand consistency throughout my life, for loving me and showingme what it means to be good and right. It is also important to begrateful for the community that we have become. We have formedrelationships with teachers and staff that many other schools donot have. We not only see them as instructors, but also friends thatValedictorian:Gabrielle Aquino, Boston CollegeSalutatorian:Kimberly Esguerra, Seton Hall U.School Consultative Board Award:Dave Schanz, Binghamton UniversityClass of 2012 Graduation HonorsJane Albert Award of Service:Ann Cierpial, Rutgers UniversityMichael Marotti Dedication Award:Marty Davidson, U. of North CarolinaPrincipal’s Award:Gabrielle Aquino, Boston College* 175 Graduates * $18,019,803 in college scholarships *Senior Spotlightswe can have comfortable conversationwith and relate to. They are aunique aspect of UC and somethingthat we will surely miss. We eachhave classmates we know we couldnot have survived high school without. It’s nice to know we’re all inthis together, like the High SchoolMusical song. Together we walkedthese halls, ate in the courtyard, took tests, made projects, and nowreceivedour diplomas. It’s strangeto think we would not be togethernext year, but whoever and whateveryou want to keep with you from UC will always be close at heartand mind. As Charles Dickens once said, “The pain of parting isnothing to the joy of meeting again”.I didn’t want to write a speech to advise or instruct. As a fellowstudent, I only hoped that my speech would make you feel something.I want each of you to discover hope and inspiration insideof yourselves. As you sit in your chair right now, look aroundat your classmates and live in this moment. See the possibilitieseach person holds, and be confident that we are ready to move on.The things we have received here at UC have prepared us for ourdreams, even if they seem unbelievable to most. If there is onepiece of advice I could give you all, it would be this: Find yourpassion- what you love to do, what makes you happy, and pursueit. Find your inspiration and run with it. Run like the wind, likethere’s nothing that can stop you. Run like Mr. McCoid is chasingafter you like an Olympic track star as you are sprinting towards aslip and slide just barely within reach.Don’t be afraid to do something that scares you. The uncertainty ofour futures is frightening, but be courageous and be brave. Don’tever give up on a life that you can be proud of and try to makean impact on the world and a name for yourself, always stayingthankful for the blessings you have received. Have faith in othersand in your abilities, but most importantly- have faith in yourself.Because without faith, nothing is possible. And with it, impossibleis nothing. Good luck to the Class of 2012. I’m honored to havespent these past four years with you all. And, thanks for the goodtimes. In December 2010, Leo wrote a Christmas play for his teacher’s elementary students to perform.Always having loved theater himself, he was able to gain experience with different modes of writingthrough the experience—even writing his own music for the play! School Consultative Board SpotlightJim Siburn '8150th AnniversaryA key member on Union Catholic’s School Consultative Board, Jim Siburn ’81 returned to UnionCatholic when his children began attending high school. Like many of the Board members, Jim jokesthat he became so involved at UC because Sister Percylee asked him to (and no one can say “no” toSister!). Yet, he truly attributes his decision to feeling compelled to give back to the school that gavehis family such positive experiences. After graduating from Union Catholic in 1981, Jim went on to earn his B.S. in Business Managementfrom Fairleigh Dickinson University. He is currently the President of OrthoMedix, LLC, a medicalsales company that distributes orthopedic implants to hospitals and orthopedic surgeons in the tri-statearea. This business background proves useful for Jim in his endeavors at Union Catholic, as he serveson the Institutional Advancement committee for the Board. This particular committee is primarilyconcerned with discovering new ways to push UC forward in the education market.Jim feels that it is important for alumnito reconnect with UC because, “tuitionalone does not cover all the costs ofeducating a student. In these tough economic times, the support of thealumni is needed to ensure that Union Catholic not only survives, but issuccessful for the next 50 years.” In reaching out to alums, Jim has beenoverwhelmed by their responses and stories explaining how UC was instrumentalto their personal and professional successes. They credit strongacademics, coupled with Christian values, as the catalyst to their success.Jim believes that UC is changing students’ lives for the better, and they areleaving Union Catholic well prepared for the next chapter in their lives. His family’s experience with Union Catholic, including his children Sean’11 and Jamie ’14, has had a profound impact on his life. He is a stellar exampleof the many alums who are giving of their time, talent, and treasure,to ensure that UC thrives for another half century. 50th AnniversaryAs of July 1, 2012, Union Catholic’s 50th Anniversary has officially begun! Union Catholicopened in September 1962 as two distinct schools, Union Catholic Boys High School andUnion Catholic Girls High School, with two separate mascots (now retired) and less than 300students. Today, the school stands united with close to 800 students and over 10,000 alumni. The goal of the 50th Anniversary is to re-engage with as many alumni as possible and to host50 events celebrating UC50. This will culminate in the final celebration during the weekendof April 26-29, 2013. Union Catholic is pleased to announce the four Honorary Chairs: JaneAlbert, Rocky Lettieri, Mike Marotti and Bette Schnitzer, who share their vision and spirit.
