IBU EVENT AND COMPETITION RULES 3snow, solidly packed, even, smoothly groomed <strong>and</strong> not icy, <strong>and</strong> the entirearea used by competitors during the <strong>competition</strong> must be level.3.4.3.1 Shooting LanesThe shooting ramp is divided into shooting lanes from which onecompetitor at a time will shoot. Every shooting lane must be at least2.75 m but not more than 3 m wide. The width of the lanes must bemarked on both sides of the shooting ramp from the front edge for adistance of 1.5 m to the rear with a red-colored board sunken into thesnow so that it is 2 cm below the snow surface. Both sides of each lanemust be marked from the ramp to the targets with seven (7) T-postswith sign boards max. 20 cm wide by 15 cm high, in alternating colorsmatching the background color of the target numbers that clearly definethe lanes but do not interfere with shooting. There must be a minimumdistance of 3 -5 m between the outer edge of the left <strong>and</strong> right lanes<strong>and</strong> the start of the safety berms they adjoin. This distance must bemaintained from the ramp to the targets.3.4.3.2 Shooting MatsFor shooting in both the prone <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ing positions, mats must beplaced at the front part of each shooting lane on the shooting ramp. Forall IBU <strong>event</strong>s, the mats must be 200 cm x 150 cm <strong>and</strong> 1 to 2 cm thick,<strong>and</strong> must be made of synthetic or natural fibers with a non-slip surface.3.4.4 Targets3.4.4.1 Types of TargetsThere are two main kinds of targets used in biathlon – metal <strong>and</strong> paper.Only metal targets are permitted to be used for <strong>competition</strong> <strong>and</strong> onlypaper targets will be used for rifle zeroing. Both paper <strong>and</strong> metal targetsmay be used for training. Only targets that are in conformity with the IBUMaterials Catalogue (Annex A) may be used for IBU <strong>competition</strong>s. At allIBU <strong>competition</strong>s, the shooting range must have 30 shooting lanes <strong>and</strong>targets of the same type/model. The targets used for OWG, WCH <strong>and</strong> WCmust have a remote reset capability (without rope).3.4.4.2 Target MaintenanceTargets must be maintained, set <strong>and</strong> adjusted according to themanufacturer’s instructions.IBU RULES 3-39
