3IBU EVENT AND COMPETITION RULESThe start must be placed at right angles to the skiing direction <strong>and</strong>must be marked with a red line sunken into the snow. The area mustbe well fenced-off <strong>and</strong> must be suitable to cope with the traffic flow ofcompetitors, team support staff <strong>and</strong> officials without problems. Theremust be a warm-up area immediately adjacent to the start zone forcompetitors to perform their final, pre-<strong>competition</strong> warm-up, withenough room to store warm-up clothing, <strong>and</strong> space for a minimum of20 rifle racks able to hold at least seven rifles each, or as otherwisedirected by the RD /TD.3.2.2 Individual <strong>and</strong> Sprint Competition Start AreasThe start area for Individual <strong>and</strong> Sprint <strong>competition</strong>s must beapproximately 8-10 m long <strong>and</strong> a minimum of 2 m wide <strong>and</strong> must beseparated from the warm-up area by a fence with an opening to allowcontrolled access to the area.3.2.3 Pursuit Competition Start AreaThe start area for the Pursuit <strong>competition</strong> must have a minimum offour start lanes. The actual number of start lanes will be determinedby the number of simultaneous starts in the start list – if there are fivestarts in the same second, there must be five start lanes, etc. The startlanes must be numbered from the competitors’ right to left, 1.5-2 mwide <strong>and</strong> sufficiently long to hold the required number of competitors. Acommon start line must cross the end of the start lanes. The lanes mustbe parallel to each other <strong>and</strong> must be clearly separated. There must bea separate passage or lane that allows access across the start line in thecase of late starts. This lane must be supervised by a start official witha stopwatch synchronized to the <strong>competition</strong> time. A transponder timingpoint must be installed 1.5 m after the start line with a video camerainstalled to capture the relative start time of each competitor in case ofearly start.3.2.3.1 Pursuit Start BoardsSeparate boards, showing the start numbers <strong>and</strong> start times for eachlane in large print easily readable by competitors <strong>and</strong> officials, must bepositioned in front of the applicable start lanes <strong>and</strong> at the start line, onthe competitor’s left.3-32 IBU RULES
