Tyson Grumm: The HobnobbersBEPPU WIARDA GALLERY, PORTLAND OR – Nov 1-Dec 2 Tyson Grumm’s acrylic paintings havegained recognition both locally and nationally since 1996, when he received his BFA fromSouthern Oregon State University. Grumm’s allegorical scenes are reminiscent of another time andplace, where contrived moments are skewed by unsuspected relationships among his subjects, their settings and costumes.Grumm’s paintings are concisely rendered, making thesurreal tableau that much more witty. There is a sense offamiliarity or even nostalgia, although it is difficult topinpoint the meaning of the situations. Many appearhumorous. Strange characters and odd animals areportrayed as either illustrating a tale or as classic portraits. For example, the red head adornment of Miss Doodle Do issculpted like a rooster, signifying perhaps, a mascot or anaffinity for the species. Many of the paintings are mountedwithin the context of old objects that act as framingdevices. These paintings resemble family heirlooms ortreasured antiques. As Grumm states, “It will create its own history as thepiece of art is interpreted and observed by its owners andgenerations to come. This time-lapsed magical event ispossibly the single most inspiring part about creating thesepieces.” Grumm’s work has been exhibited in London, NewYork, California and Kirkland, Washingon, and is includedin many public and private collections throughout Oregonand Washington.
